Beyond general hygiene and sanitation, we have every modern convenience at our fingertips. We have thoroughly educated doctors and nurses and midwives and doulas to assist us. We have books and childbirth classes and entire Facebook groups committed to our happy, healthy childbirth. ____________________________ Now imagine giving birth in a shed with a dirt floor, dogs and chickens running through, no separate bedroom, no running water, and perhaps worst of all, minimal understanding of what is happening to your own body through all of this and not a single expert to explain it to you or to help if anything goes wrong. ____________________________ Curamericas is an organization committed to bringing basic maternal health essentials and education to women & children in developing nations. What Curamericas brings to these families is both empowering and literally life-giving. But best of all? They’re creating something beautifully SUSTAINABLE. Meet our #womancrushwednesday Flory! She is just one of the many mothers that will be served by our two NEW Casa Maternas in San Marcos. She lives in a small community in the western highlands of Guatemala. Flory gave birth to her first child at the age of 16 and has since had four more children. Unfortunately, her pregnancies have not been easy. She has experienced severe complications with two pregnancies and another complication after the birth of her latest son Byron. Like many of the women in the community, Flory does not have a car, bike or other transportation and so when the complication occurred, Flory and her husband had to find money to get her to the hospital. Fortunately, all five of her children (and Flory!) are alive and well. After 3 days of training, 5 days interviews, and countless miles walked through the steep hills of rural Guatemala, nine of our Curamericas Guatemala staff completed over 175 interviews with mothers who have a child under the age of 1.
