Hinata took a deep breath, trying not to peek around the curtain at the audience.

“Last-minute jitters?” a familiar voice asked. Hinata looked up to see her friends Asuka and Miyu, and sister Hatsuki standing there, with smiles on their faces. “You’ll be okay,” Hatsuki continued. “If there’s anybody here that’s got what it takes, it’s you, sis.”

Asuka stepped forward and clapped a hand on her friend’s shoulder. “The nerd’s right, small-fry. You’ve got the energy and drive. You’ve led us into battle. What’s an audience of our Cure-seniors, compared to a Korihaku?”

Miyu smiled encouragingly, though her voice didn’t rise above a whisper. “Everyone here’s really nice. I’m sure you don’t have anything to worry about!”

Hinata smiled wide and wrapped the other three in a group hug. “Thank you guys. So much. It means the world to me that I’ve got you in my corner—I wouldn’t be able to do half the stuff we do without your support.”

Asuka laughed and pried herself loose, ruffling Hinata’s hair. “Aw, hush, twerp. You’ve got a speech to give, don’t you?”

Miyu and Hatsuki nodded, stepping back as well. “Don’t keep them waiting,” Hatsuki agreed. Miyu flashed a double-thumbs-up.

Hinata nodded once, decisively, and stepped out onto the stage. The crowd wasn’t quite what she’d pictured—the stage lighting cast them all in silhouette, and she honestly wasn’t sure if that helped or made the stage fright worse. She took a deep breath as she approached the mark, squaring her shoulders as she came to a stop. With an internal reminder of her friends at her back, she felt a smile break out over her face.

“Hello, non-canonical multiversal nexus point! Heckuva night, huh? We’ve had so many wonderful speeches from so many incredibly deserving people. I find myself incredibly lucky to be here tonight, and honored to be allowed to present this category. As you know, being the leader of a team is a huge responsibility. It requires not only a level head and a caring heart, but a drive to see things through, and a determination to hold to the ideals and principles that enabled one to become a Cure in the first place. I’ve gotten to meet so many of my seniors here tonight, and I am so happy that I have so many wonderful examples of what it means to call oneself not just a Pretty Cure, but a lead Cure. The nominees tonight are only a few among the many, but I know that we, as a group, look up to them as much as I look up to everyone here.”

“The nominees for Best Leader Cure are: Cure Hope, of Immortal Friendship Precure, Cure Spark, of Charge Up! Pretty Cure, Cure Cerberus, of Mythical Pretty Cure!, Cure Cream, of Creamy Cafe Pretty Cure, Cure Wonder, of Happily Ever After! Fairytale Precure, Cure Marshmallow, of Care Package Precure, Cure Dolly, of Toychest Pretty Cure!, and last but certainly not least, Cure Delphin, of Tidal Song Precure!”

Hinata smiled, hands hesitating a moment over the envelope’s seal, as she looked out over the crowd. “And the winner of the 2019 award for Best Leader Cure is… it’s a tie! Congratulations to Cure Cream and Cure Delphin!”
