I find it sad that even when I filter out all the jedi critical/bashing tags I can think of, half of the fics (obi-wan centric) I click on still ends up being jedi critical.

so when a bedraggled, light-haired and light-skinned man showed up on her doorstep carrying a child, Beru Whitesun saw a solution to all her problems: identity fraud to get out of paying death taxes to the Hutts and ensure she had enough help running the farm

she even got a free baby out of the deal, and was able to convince her totally-not-new 'husband' that this would keep him safe from the new Empire as well!

this does, of course, add an additional layer of awkwardness to the arrival of Artoo and Threepio at the start of A New Hope

I’m going insane.

So for context I’m writing a Codywan one shot (but pro Jedi) and because I don’t want to make the characters too OOC I’ve been watching some Star Wars scene. And I was watching this scene from the old clone war movie where obi-wan is like, “but we’ve been here for a month already”, and Cody answers, “yes Sir, we’re right on schedule”. And maybe it’s just my imagination but I could literally hear the humor in his voice.

Anyway, I made the mistake to looks at some of the comment, and the first one is saying that this scene showed that there’s tension (negative) between them ? Like what ? And someone even answered that the Jedi hated the Clones. Double what ? I didn’t even watch all of the clone war (mostly I picked the obi-wan’s centric ones) and I know it’s not true.

Please make a post on Yoda 🥺 I love frog grandpa so much but I've noticed lately that some anti-Jedi sentiment includes awful things about Yoda, calling him "out of touch" or making him a "hardliner" and unyielding or even portraying him as dismissive or cruel and I HATE it.

Yoda has always been a wise mentor figure. He loves the younger generations and always does his best for them. He cares so much for his fellow Jedi, the clones, and other people besides. He loves people so much. We see in canon that his greatest wish is for his family to be happy and healthy. He's funny and clever. And so so cool! I still remember watching AOTC in theaters and everyone clapping and cheering when Yoda fought Dooku.

Like he is THEE kind and wise elder and whenever I see people misrepresenting his character it makes me sad.

It makes no sense to me that people make him out to be a hardass because there's no evidence for that anywhere---although I feel like the only reason people make him out to be that way is because they're projecting their own feelings about the elders in their lives- (parents, grandparents, random people at events, co-workers, etc.) -and their reactions to certain things onto him. They're dissatisfied and angry about those people's authoritarian way of looking at things and then apply their behavior to Yoda, just so they can take out their anger on him and use him as a metaphorical punching bag.

On the "out of touch" claim, I think of it the same way---people get pissed off about the out of touch elders in their lives who refuse to learn or change in any way, and so they apply their behaviors to Yoda so they have someone to use as a stand-in "bad guy" to represent the people they're actually upset with. The only "evidence" towards Yoda being out of touch is a quote from Dooku where he basically says "no one can be old without being out of touch" and like...maybe we shouldn't take the word of a Sith Lord as gospel? Just maybe?

Plus that claim isn't even true, as long as you're open to learning and changing and admitting your flaws---which we see are all core parts of being a Jedi and are also behaviors we see exhibited by Yoda---then age has no factor in whether or not someone is "in touch" or "out of touch." So, like I said, we definitely shouldn't be taking Dooku's word for it.

Yoda is amazing and you are absolutely correct that he is THE kind and wise mentor, and it's complete bullshit that people treat him the way that they do.

It astounds me how people can hate the jedi council and the jedi code and about anything that make someone a Jedi yet still claim to love Obi-wan. What do you like about him then ?

It also astound me how some people say they actually like the jedi yet still think that they're responsible for Anakin's Fall.

I was thinking about how the Padawans being part of the war effort DOES suck and kind of bother me, but for some reason I don't really see it as an in universe moral failing of the Jedi.

First I was like: well Star Wars is aimed at kids . A pov character that is a kid makes sense. Especially in the early seasons of TCW and Rebels. This was added in the cartoon and it became part of movie canon after the fact that Padawans held military rank. Suspension of disbelief etc etc.

Then I was like... Wait. Padme was fourteen when she became elected queen, and although it was supposed to be a peaceful rule it got to the point where other fourteen-year-olds became her body doubles in case of assassinations. She also goes and leads an army to take back her planet. At no point was anyone like: you know what you're fourteen you should probably stay at base camp while we do this. We don't actually need you for the storming the palace part.

The GFFA in universe does not place moral significance on it. It isn't weird. If it did there is no way Shmi would have said: yes my nine year old son will do the death race when he doesn't have to even though he has never won or finished before. The plot must allow the gffa to be okay with child endangerment with the good guys still being good guys. No one says Shmi is a terrible mom when she agrees to let Anakin do it. She wasn't being coerced she's just convinced that the only way to help people is to put a nine year old in a death race. In real life if she did that we'd be horrified. And remember Padme isn't bothered because of Anakin's age she's bothered that they're staking everything on a random kid.

So Padawan Commanders makes sense in the GFFA.

Although yeah it makes sense to feel bad about Padawan Commanders in the real world, it also doesn't really say anything about the Jedi and their morality. They're pretty in step with the rules of morality of the universe.

The GFFA has similarities, but it isn't our galaxy.

Would I want children in real life to be trained as Jedi? No. I wouldn't want an eight year old to be trained as crimefighting hero Robin either. It's only when we're looking back at these things through an adult lens and ground fantasy in reality that it becomes a problem.

If you don't want to suspend your disbelief that's fine. But can you make moral judgements on the Jedi without looking at anyone else in the galaxy about this one particular fact? I don't think you can.

I don't know, funny to think about. Especially with the newer media which is aimed at for adults with nostalgia. Then the story does try to seem grounded in reality, but also trying to justify the past where our belief was suspended.

*slams this comic down and yells about it* It's not that feelings are wrong, it's that they are Level 100 Space Psychics whose emotions are the foundation of their connection to the energy field that gives them those abilities. A Jedi can literally crush someone's windpipe with their mind. A Jedi can move so fast a regular person could never keep up with them, they could slice right through you before you could do more than twitch. A Jedi is placed in a position where lives are going to depend on how well they can handle a crisis. Feelings are normal, natural, and the Jedi have never said to suppress them. But instead that control is vital and this is exactly why--because using the Force through anger and fear is the dark side, that's literally what the Force is, your emotions. Jedi have to have higher standards than most people because otherwise people will die. Qui-Gon is not the first to say this (off the top of my head, I remember instances of Obi-Wan saying it in The Clone Wars, I remember Depa saying it in the Kanan comics, this is basically what Yoda was talking about in ESB) because this is what the Jedi teach and live by. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, because wrecking yourself is going to get a lot of people hurt.

I was reading the Attack of the Clone's script for *research* purposes, and it's been a while since I've seen the full movie but:

OBI-WAN: You look tired. ANAKIN: I don't sleep well, anymore. OBI-WAN: Because of your mother? ANAKIN: I don't know why I keep dreaming About her now. I haven't seen her since I was little. OBI-WAN: Dreams pass in time. ANAKIN: I'd rather dream of Padmé. Just Being around her again is... intoxicating. OBI-WAN: Mind your thoughts, Anakin, they betray you. You've made a commitment to the Jedi order... a commitment not easily broken... and don't forget she's a politician. They're not to be trusted.

Literally I will never be able to take the "Obi-Wan is so mean he didn't let Anakin go find his mother" argument seriously ever again. On a purely factual level, there's not a single indication Anakin told Obi-Wan his dreams showed him his mother was in danger or that he thought they were dreams from the Force. Anakin says himself that he doesn't know why he's dreaming of her, which makes Obiwan's "Dreams pass in time," so incredibly reasonable.

Wait wait wait let me update the language to the *pretentious voice* modern parlance. It'll be like a Shakespere "translation." Here we go:

Obi-Wan: you look tired Anakin: I haven't been sleeping well Obi-Wan: Cuz of your dreams? Anakin: Yeah I've been randomly having dreams about my mom all of a sudden. Obi-Wan: They'll probably go away if you wait a bit. Brains are weird like that sometimes. …

The only evidence Obi-Wan might have to the danger point is that the dreams are disrupting Anakin's sleep. But Obiwan is the one to bring up the dreams, in context of them disrupting Anakin's sleep. If Anakin was looking for an opening, that was it.

But way more importantly to me currently is the fact that Anakin transitions out of talking about his mother by going "I'd rather dream of Padmé. Just Being around her again is... intoxicating."

Wtf anakin??? Who says that??? Let alone to their brother-dad???

He seriously goes from talking about his dreams of his mother to how his crush that he's known for a couple days total at this point is really hot, and people expect me to believe that Obi-Wan was supposed to divine from this conversation that they needed to immediately run halfway across the galaxy to prevent imminent disaster?????

Let me continue my translation:

… Anakin: I'd rather dream about having sex with Padmé. She's so hot and pretty and nice Obi-Wan: Anakin remember how the beliefs you've been committed to for the past ten years are maybe important to you? Also politicians are generally corrupt, we eat the rich in this household.

This is a fanfic type miscommunication plot at best, except for some reason people act like Anakin isn't being about as clear as mud.

So I've seen a lot of post related to this recently, so I'll add my two cents.

Listen I don't think the Jedi are like totally completely perfect. I don't think that they can't do mistakes. I don't think that ALL Jedi are good persons (but I still think that MOST of them are).

However I don't engage much with the "jedi are flawed but still good guys" part of the fandom. Why ? Because most of the time, what these people means by flawed is "they have good intentions but...." : "they're emotionally stunned because they suppress their emotions", "they should allow marriage", "they need to reform and change their way", "if they changed their way Anakin wouldn't have fallen".

And I just...don't think it's true. Controlling your emotions isn't the same as suppressing them. Just because some people can't handle being a jedi (and there's nothing wrong with that. Its hard) doesn't mean that they have to change their way. As for marriage, I've already shared my opinion on that: I don't think it's necessary. You can live someone without getting married. As for Anakin, I wish people would stop acting as if he's a child with no agency. He was 19-20 when he commited his first genocide. That's young yes. But not so young that he can't discern right from wrong. Just because his anger was understandable in the moment doesn't mean his actions were right or that he wasn't responsible for them (and no one forgetting about Palpatine role in this but this post isn't supposed to be about Anakin so I'll stop here).
