Curtis was born to seemingly loving parents, however unfortunately the love wasnât quite strong enough for his father to stay. When Curtis was 10, his father left him, his mother, and older sister, letting them know that he no longer wanted to be a father or be married to his mother. Curtis didnât really know how to process what was happening given his age. And his sister did his best to protect him from what had happened. But after he entered middle school, Curtis began to feel the wrath of the fact that his father didnât love him enough to stay. It gutted him pretty good and he would get into fights at school, picking them with anyone he could. Being from a small town and knowing of his fatherâs transgressions, a teacher took Curtis under his wing. He encouraged Curtis to channel that anger into sports, getting him into football. Football was a safe place for him to grow and learn and get out of Fallbrook and the town that held all the memories of not being good enough.
He ended up getting a full ride scholarship to the University of Minnesota where he played football. Minnesota couldnât be more different from Fallbrook, North Carolina and he loved it for that. The bitter cold winters seemed to fit right into the cold heart that had slowly developed in Curtis over the years. While he loved his mother and sister, and would do anything for them, he still couldnât shake the feelings of inadequacy. While his sister dealt with this by channeling herself into art and whimsy, and his mother did so by finding any man who could fill the void he left behind, Curtis did so by generally just being a grumpy soul. Once heâd graduated from college with a communications degree, he knew that the football part of his life was over. So with nothing else left to do, he returned to Fallbrook.Â
The man had always been good with his hands, so he decided to start his own landscaping business. Not having much in the way of relationship needs, Curtis could throw himself into his work and create a viable business for himself. Within the span of a year, his father was diagnosed with cancer. And his mother fell victim to a brutal car accident. When his father was diagnosed with cancer, he finally began reaching out to Curtis to try and develop a relationship. It wasnât as though heâd been completely absent, given that theyâd both stayed in the same town despite his dad leaving their family behind. But for the most part, they kept out of each otherâs ways. While a part of Curtis was happy about the turn of events, it didnât change how he felt about life and the world. Both would be dead by the end of the year and to Curtisâ amazement, his father had left Curtis the bait shop that he had owned and run for years. Curtis could not believe it. The day he went to the store, his new store, he stared at the place, a place that he had never been able to go into for years as he grew up. A place that represented such darkness in his life. He knew that he was going to have to change it completely. So the next day he woke up and began changing the place from a bait shop, into a bar. He did most of the handiwork on his own, letting his landscaping business lapse in the process. The process was a therapeutic and he found himself developing a certain relationship with his father after death. And so was born, Curtâs Bar and Liquor Store. Nothing fancy, just the place that he worked. It was what it was. And he was proud of it.
One day, he met a woman who seemed to find his grumpy demeanor fairly endearing. And for once, Curtis realized that he might just be enough for someone. The two decided to get married in a whirlwind relationship that only ended up in them being separated less than a year later. He is more than ready to sign the divorce papers. But she is currently in the wind. He canât wait for this part of his life to be over. However, he did get one good thing out of it. She didnât leave because he wasnât good enough, they both decided they were in the wrong relationship. And it was a wake up call for him to realize that things werenât so black and white. He is glad for having gone through the relationship. But ready for it to over with.
Most days thatâs where Curtis can be found. His bar doesnât have any sort of theme. And thatâs how he likes it. Although residents would argue, the theme is Curtâs grumpy demeanor providing all the entertainment they need.

Curt is a grumpy, no nonsense sort of person. He doesnât like drama or bullshit. Heâs been known to kick people out of his bar for breaking his list of ever growing rules.
Curt takes care of his friends needs when it comes to handiwork because he enjoys doing it.
When he finished renovating the bait shop in town to become Curtâs Bar and Liquor Store, he decided to leave the sign Lukeâs Bait Shop above the store. Itâs confusing for everyone whoâs not a resident which is good because he doesnât like tourists anyway.
