But when everyone is served with either a cool refreshing soda or a warm cup of coffee you can't stall any longer. You have to address the elephant in the room. You intend do it as you would discuss any other subject. You just have to stay very professional.
You seat yourself in front of all of them and grab a clipboard, a piece of paper and a bullpen. You cross your legs sideways, your skirt ever so slightly curling up your thighs, just enough to hint away at the white lace of your thigh high tights. Instantly their chatter dies down and you find yourself under the scrutinizing gaze of the eight men.
"Now for the VIP service.” You speak as confidently as you can. “The form stipulated that the preferences were to be discussed with the hostess. Is there any particular request you'd like to make? Any preference you'd like to share?"
"I think it would be more efficient to know what is off limits." The blonde one spoke. From what you saw online. That was the leader of the group, Hongjoong.
You stayed completely silent, dumbfounded by the sudden change of dynamic. The client is supposed to state what they require from you and you are supposed to do everything in your power to fulfill their wish.
"What are the no go's for you, sweetheart?" On another question when you failed to provide an answer in a normal, reasonable time frame. That one looked carved in marble, he had delicate features that looked hand crafted to perfection, beautiful long raven black hair resting on his shoulders which you could guess were muscular even under the thick black hoodie he was wearing.
The pet name somehow made your toes tingle, sparking nervousness in your stomach again.
"I don't know the usual" you replied and immediately followed by an awkward laugh. Hongjoong smiled at you, maybe picking up on the nervousness showing through your micro habits.
"What about submissive/dominant dynamics?" The blonde man kindly asked, hinting on how to answer. "Would you be fine submitting to us?"
At the question the tingles in your toes rose in your legs. To properly answer the question you had to imagine yourself kneeling before the eight men and the thought alone made your guts stir in something that wasn't just stress. You swiped your tongue on your lower lip in an attempt to pull you out of your thoughts.
"Yes, that would be fine" you replied as plainly as possible. You spotted one of them smirk from the corner of your eyes. That one was also particularly handsome. He had sharp cat-like eyes that were piercing holes in you. The smirk grew bigger when you made eye contact with him as he was rubbing his chin with his index finger that was decorated by a simple elegant gold ring.
"What about impact and pain play?" Another one asked. This one looked the tallest among all of them, even with all of them seated you could tell by how his legs bent, his knees sitting higher than the others. His face looked the softest among all of them so much that it was hard to believe he could ask such a question with this benevolent expression on his face.
"'Like spanking?" You manage to ask without squeaking or stuttering. Which was a miracle in itself.
"Yes, like spanking, slapping, pinching, hair pulling... All that good stuff." The tall one continues.
"What do you say, doll? Would you like us to hurt you?" Hongjoong adds.
You bite your bottom lip as you feel your insides quiver. Only managing to give a shy nod to the question.
"Use your words, princess" another one intervened. This one seemed to be more mature than the others, he also had dark hair, long parted bangs tickling his lashes.
"Y-yes... that would be fine." You gulped.

The young queen sat on her throne with her legs crossed while she did her duties of solving diverse problems amongst the subjects of her kingdom. Her facial expression would seem solemn with a glance. But if you looked into her eyes, you would perceive the anguish she hid. The sadness establishing because of the disgrace of being an unwedded queen. Only a few cared about this because she was a great queen unaccompanied. She had all the queenly qualities such as generosity, intelligence, hardworking and more. Despite that, it still bothered her. She longed to have someone by her side. It wasn’t like nobody wanted to marry her. It was quite the contrary. Many princes and kings were craving to marry her. But there was one similarity that they all shared. They didn’t truly love her. They only loved the status she possessed. The skies of dusk faded into night, signaling her duties finishing for the day. She sat up from her throne and walked towards her chamber with two of her guards escorting her.
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━ ━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
When she set her foot inside her room, the maids that were assigned to ensure that her room would be clean and cozy when she returned after a long day of work greeted her with warmth. “Oh! Your highness Y/N! We were finishing up fluffing your pillows! Is there anything else you would like us to do before we leave you alone? One maid inquired with a smile.” “No. I’ll be fine.. I’ll inform you if I need anything later,” Y/N replied in a soft tone as she picked up the silk robe and towel that was folded neatly and placed on her bed. The two maids nodded and gathered up their cleaning supplies. “By the way. I hope you enjoy the rose milk bath we prepared for you today!” Y/N’s features lit up when she heard rose milk. She adored roses and had many throughout her kingdom. Especially the pink and red ones. She ran into the bathroom and locked the door. She stripped bare of her clothes and soaked herself inside of the basin that was filled with rose milk and rose petals. Her nostrils drowning in the scent of the roses. One of the best ways to calm your mind and nerves after a long and boring day of work.
After a while of soaking, she felt her skin getting wrinkly, letting her know it’s time to get out. She hopped out of the basin and walked towards the shower, where she washed off the rose milk residue and the flower petals that clung to her skin. As she was showering, she heard a knock on the door. Confused, she quickly dried her skin, tied her robe, and exited the shower. When she exited, she saw the two guards that were tasked to shield her from any threats, standing there, a smirk plastered on both of their faces. Y/N immediately clutched her robe and thought the worst. This little action making one of them offended and the other burst out laughing. “Yah! We will not touch you inappropriately or anything!” The guard, who had a pink rose tucked into his hair, exclaimed, taking major offense. “Well then, don’t smirk like that! You two are lucky I didn’t have proper clothing on or you both would’ve been severely injured.” Y/N argued back. “Well, what we wanted to tell you is there is, there is a full moon outside.” She folded her arms and raised an eyebrow. “Okay, so?” The pink rose guard facepalmed himself and looked at the other guard, who, instead of a pink rose, had a red rose tucked in his hair. “Jung. Wooyoung. Didn’t you tell her about the enchantress?!” Wooyoung looked at Yeonjun with disbelief. “Bro. You told me-Okay, you know what. Forget this. What we’re trying to say is, there is an enchantress who comes out every night of the full moon, she has the powers to grant anything, judging by your saddened expressions, both Yeonjun and I thought you would need to visit her because there is something you want but you can’t get.” Y/N was baffled at how observant they both were. “Wait.. when you say anything. Do you mean ANYTHING? Even if it’s not an item, but…. a person?” Yeonjun nodded. “When he said anything, he meant it.” Y/N looked down, then looked back at Wooyoung and Yeonjun. If this enchantress could grant her greatest desire. She will pay any price.
“Since it’s the night of the full moon? Do you think I could meet her right now?”
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━ ━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
“Yeonjun, are you sure we are going the right way?!” Wooyoung questioned, feeling unfamiliar with his surroundings. “It has to be. I’m pretty sure we need to walk further to get to her shack.” Yeonjun responded, making Wooyoung a tad bit consoled. Wooyoung gripped onto his queen’s hands to help her walk through the gloomy forest so he could prevent her from tripping on a random branch or rock. Yeonjun looked back at Y/N and Wooyoung to make sure they were okay. The slight glare of the moon reflected on her face, making Yeonjun distinguish her fright. “Woo, don’t you think it would’ve been less unsettling for all of us if you’d brought a lantern?” A pout appeared on Wooyoung’s face. “Why do you keep blaming me for everything! I try my best, you know?” Yeonjun sighed. “I guess I have to give you that.” They continued walking until they finally approached an old but mysterious-looking shack. Yeonjun was about to open the door but, he got jump scared by a dog ferociously barking at him. “AHHHHHHHH.” He screamed. Wooyoung also screamed, but he acted quickly and pulled out his sword from his belt to protect the queen. “Oh, no need for that. Jinx sit!” a woman commanded the dog. The dog immediately obeyed her commands, earning himself a treat. “Okay, go inside.” She opened the door to her shack. The dog followed and went inside to lie down on his bed. The lady then looked at the three and smiled softly. She had this eerie but sweet look that didn’t fail to make Y/N curious about her. “Oh... Wooyoung and Yeonjun. I see you’ve returned with her.”
“Come in.”
She led them towards a table decorated with many peculiar and pretty-looking items such as skulls, gems of all sorts, a glass orb, and more. She sat down at the back of the table while Y/N sat On the opposite side. Wooyoung and Yeonjun decided it was best if they returned outside to give the two privacy and guard the place because you never know what lurks around at the night. “I never thought I would see a queen in my lifetime... I am indeed honored by your presence, your majesty.” The woman bowed. “Thank you... Uh…” a small smile crept on the woman’s face. “Call me Lucinda. So… your majesty. What May I help you with? Do you want to know about your future? Gain a particular item? Change your physical appearance? Or is it something else?” Y/N gulped, feeling embarrassed to admit it. She tried and explained it in the most secretive way she could think of. “My purpose of coming here is because… I want my childhood dream to come true.” Y/N began reminiscing about all those times she used to be fascinated by the romantic fairy tales she used to skim through as a child. She hoped to always meet her prince and live a happily ever after. But sadly, fate didn’t work out the way she wanted it to. A smirk appeared on Lucinda’s face. Unbeknownst to Y/N, Lucinda knew. But to make her comfortable, Lucinda acted like she was oblivious to the genuine desire of Y/N. “Okay, your highness.. whatever you say.” Lucinda reached her hands for a box that was tucked in one of the drawers. She placed the box in front of Y/N and opened it, revealing a glass beaded necklace with the pendant of a red heart. “Take this necklace and do as I say. Once the procedure’s concluded, your greatest desire will shift to live.” Y/N took the necklace and looked at Lucinda for the rules. “Alright… step one, Collect the rainwater from a stormy day. Rain from the night will not work. Make sure the water is clean, it can mess up a part of the desire. Step two, take a small amount of blood and mix it with the rainwater. The blood could be from anything or anyone besides you. Be careful with whom’s blood you choose though... As it can also cause a big impact on the desire. Step three, take the petals of your favorite flower and soak the petals inside the mixture. Step four, In a candle-lit room, dip the necklace in the mixture for 8 minutes, and in that time focus on nothing besides your desire. Last and final step, put the necklace on and go to sleep.” Y/N nodded as she took in the information, eager to begin. “But before you begin the ritual, keep these things in mind. First, you must do these tasks without the help of your servants. Second, you can’t tell any living being your desire. This must stay with only you. Third and last rule do not under any circumstances wear the necklace without completing the ritual as it could have serious consequences, worst one being losing your life.”
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━ ━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
Day 1:
It’s been a week since she visited the enchantress. Y/N wanted to start with the ritual as soon as possible, but to her misfortune, the skies were clear. Not one rain cloud in sight for the entire week. She continued doing all her duties, but a guard running full speed inside the courtroom interrupted her. “Your majesty! The storms are pouring heavily outside!” She perked up from her throne when she heard the news. It was time to begin. “Thank you for informing me.” She turned towards her brother, who sat on the throne to the left of hers. Confused at her sudden happiness. “Hwa Hwa, please do me a favor and look after my duties... I have some personal issues I must tend to..” Seonghwa nodded and smiled at Y/N. “Of course. Take your time, sister.” She returned a smile towards her brother. “Wooyoung, Yeonjun, please accompany me.” Her two most trusted guards obeyed her and followed her to her chambers.
When she walked inside, she saw the same maids as last time tidying up her room. “Oh, Queen Y/N! What may we help you with?” The same maid as last time asked in a sweet voice. “Sweet Mya, please be a dear and get me a raincoat.” Mya nodded and went to her closet. It didn’t take one minute for Mya to come back with a pale pink raincoat. “Here you go!” she said as she handed Y/N the coat and some boots to match. Y/N took it with a smile. “Do you guys need any?” Y/N asked Yeonjun and Wooyoung. “No, it’s okay! We have our armor protecting us.” Wooyoung assured her. The three set off into the rose garden, Y/N had a glass bottle in hand to collect the rainwater. Y/N placed the hood on her head to protect her hair and went out in the rain. She held the bottle out so it could be filled with the rainwater. “Y/N!” Wooyoung shouted from the shade. Y/N turned her head to look at him. “Why didn’t you use the water that was running from the roof?”. She looked up at the shelter the two were standing underneath and he was right. Plenty of water leaked and it was definitely more convenient than standing in the rain. But she remembered Lucinda’s words. “Make sure the water is clean, it can really mess up the desire.” Not willing to risk any chances. She shouted back at Wooyoung responding to his question. “I’m already drenched by the rain, that would mean nothing if I just followed what you told me.” Yeonjun nodded in agreement. “True,” Wooyoung said also agreeing. When the bottle reached its brim, Y/N closed the cap tightly onto it and ran to the shelter.
“Step one, completed”

Day 2:
Y/N stared at the bottle of rainwater in her hand as she thought about how she was going to proceed with the next step. “Take a small amount of blood and mix it with the rainwater. The blood could be from anything or anyone besides you. Be careful with whom’s blood you choose, though. As it can also cause a big impact on the desire.” She knew she had to be wise when doing this step. Who’s blood should she mix with the rainwater? With an exasperated groan, she rubbed her temples. She entered the courtroom and went towards her brother, who was in his usual part of the room. She ran towards him with a pout and laced her arms around him, embracing him in a side hug. “Woah there, everything alright Lil sis?” He said as he patted her back. “I don’t know what to do anymore,” Y/N said in a dejected tone, making her brother worried. “What do you mean? Is handling the kingdom too much?” She shook her head no. “It’s not that brother..it’s something else..” Seonghwa nodded. “If you need a break, I got you. Go rest, I can see after the kingdom for a day.” She looked at him with wide eyes. “Really? You would do that!?” He nodded and squeezed her hand reassuringly. “Y/N, you’re my little sister. I would do anything for you.” He smiled at her. “Thank you so much, Hwa! You are the best big brother anyone could ask for. Love you!” She kissed his cheek and ran towards the exit of the court. She gestured Wooyoung and Yeonjun to follow her again. They went outside where they saw the charioteer feeding his horse some carrots. “Mingi!” She shouted gaining his attention. “Ah!Y/N!Where is your destination for today?” Y/N thought for a minute. “The market please.” Mingi nodded and opened the carriage’s door. “Hop in!”
When the three were situated comfortably in the carriage, Yeonjun asked the queen. “Why did you choose the market?” Y/N shrugged. “I honestly have no reason. It feels right.”
The carriage stopped in the market area. Settled in were many shops. All selling items of different varieties. As she walked through, many people bowed to show their respect towards her. “Wooyoung, can you please get us and yourself something to eat?” Y/N asked Wooyoung as she handed him a wad of cash. “Of course, anything specific?” Y/N had a mental fight with herself as she decided what to eat. After a couple of seconds, she finally decided a piece of chocolate cake would be nice as she’s eaten nothing sweet in a while. “Get me some churros, please! I heard they got fantastic ones here!” Yeonjun exclaimed with a cute smile plastered on his handsome face. “I’ll take the same. How about you Mingi?” Wooyoung asked, turning his gaze to Mingi. “Some carrots and a cupcake, please!” They all thanked the queen for her benevolence, Wooyoung then left to go to the shops that had the treats. Y/N stood there and glanced around. Her sight was captivated by a man, a man bringing a bag of food for someone who looked homeless. She slowly crept closer to eavesdrop on the conversation. “Thank you so much... you don’t understand how much this would help me..” The man smiled. “Of course! Anytime! If you need anything, stop by me! I will always be happy to offer you some freshly baked pastries!” The man then turned to leave for his shops. Y/N couldn’t help but feel curious. “Yeonjun, I’m going over there to check out those shops. Stay here! I’ll be back!” Before Yeonjun could respond, Y/N left, giving him no say.
Y/N was now in front of a shop called “Sunshine’s Sweets.” She stood outside for a while, contemplating whether she should go in or stay out. She concluded she would go inside. When she opened the door, the noise it made startled the man. He quickly wiped his tears and faced her. “Good day ma’am! What can we-Oh my god!? Your highness! It’s an honor to meet you!” He bowed. Y/N looked at the man with concern. In a soft voice, she asked. “I hope I’m not being invasive, but what’s wrong? Why are you crying?” The man’s face turned pale when she asked him this. He let out a heavy sigh as he sat on his stool. “Well… My business has been going down recently. I barely make any profit these days because I can’t stand to see homeless people suffer, also nobody comes to my shop anymore..” Y/N tilted her head in confusion. “Why? Your treats look pretty tasty.” With a frown, he told her the reason. “People think I’m scamming them because I give the homeless people free food.” Y/N had to stop herself from rolling her eyes with aggravation. People can be so irritating sometimes. “I’m sorry this happened.. smile, but may I ask you something?” She asked, making the man perk up. “Anything!” She took a deep breath before asking, “Do you regret any of this?” He looked at her, confused. “What do you mean.” “I mean giving out the food. Do you regret it?” The man smiled. “If I had to do it again, I would. Seeing the smiles of the people I helped makes me euphoric..” Y/N felt very satisfied with his answer. His blood was pure kindness. “What’s your name?.” “Jeong Yunho.” With a smile, she offered him an opportunity, but with one condition. “Yunho. You are a good person. I am willing to help your business go back to how it was, if not even better. But with one request.” He widened his eyes. “What is it? I’m willing to sell my soul to you if that is it!” She giggled. “Your lucky it’s not. But the request is strange.” Yunho smiled. “Strange is a word I’m not afraid of!”
“Give me a small sample of your blood. As strange as it sounds trust me.”
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━ ━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
Day 3 (last day):
Y/N finally could return to her duties of ruling her kingdom because this is a step she planned to do in the night. She didn’t know whether this decision was going to have an impact or do nothing at all. But she wasn’t taking any chances. She always preferred night over day. Not only does night come with rest, but it also comes with a calm but mysterious atmosphere. After a while of sitting on the throne and making decisions that were best for her and her kingdom, the night finally made its entrance. Before she went to her chambers, she visited her garden. The guards weren’t weirded out by her visiting her garden in the middle of the night because this was a usual occurrence. She loved to see how the moon would glisten against the rose petals. After a couple of minutes of admiring the beauty of the roses, she plucked one. She scrutinized it, but this seemed to be dirty. She placed that one aside, knowing what to do with them, so she didn’t waste the pretty flowers. Again, she plucked another, but this one seemed to be ripped. She sighed and cast it aside. She hoped it won’t take a while to find the perfect rose. After five more roses with a problem such as ripped or dirty, finally, she found the perfect one. The 8th rose had no defects. It was perfect. She squealed in excitement. She picked up the basket of roses and ran towards her room.
When she unlocked her room, she quickly went into action. She took out all the items and set them neatly on the table. As Lucinda said, she took out the candles that she had saved for this very moment and lit them ablaze. After doing so, she shut off all the lights and closed the curtains so the only visible light could be the lights of the candles.
Now it was time.
After creating the mixture, she soaked the necklace inside of it for 8 minutes. The only thing that was on her mind was him. She didn’t know how to envision how he’d look, but she knew what type of person she wanted him to be. When the time was up, she put the necklace on. The moment she clasped the necklace against her neck was when she blacked out.
She was awoken by the glare of the sun rays that shone through her window. She arose quickly to see if the ritual worked. Unfortunately, the only presence in the room was her. She let out a frustrated groan and walked towards her vanity. “Was I so foolish to believe this ritual would be effective?” She said, disappointed at how doltish she was. She was about to cry when a sudden realization hit her. But wait… she could clearly remember she blacked out on the vanity. How is it that someone placed her comfortably on her bed? She knew she locked her doors last night so it couldn’t possibly be a maid or butler. Her hands unconsciously went and clutched onto the heart pendant. A radiant reddish-pink hue was emitted from the pendant. It was truly fascinating. “Is this supposed to light up?” It was a rhetorical question, but she got an answer. “Indeed, it is, mistress.” A husky but gentle voice said from behind her. When she turned around. It was as if time stopped. The man who stood before her was ethereal. She walked up to him to have a closer look at his countenance. His hair resembled the color of her favorite pink roses, his face looked silky smooth as one of those rose petals, his jawline was sharp as the knives in her kitchen, his eyes were big and round, his lips looked smooth and kissable. This man was perfect. The epitome of Perfect. “Who are you?” She questioned as her eyes shamefully scanned his clothed body. He looked very muscular, that’s for sure. “Greetings to you, mistress. The name is Kang Yeosang.” His hands lowered to intertwine with hers. A very visible blush painted her cheeks at his next words.
"The quiet guy who lives next door to you hardly seems to notice you, but you can't help but notice him—he's gorgeous. You've given up all hope of striking up a conversation until he comes to your rescue one night after your ex shows up at your house, drunk and looking to take you back, whether you want him or not." - Prompt

The slope of his nose was perfectly leveled. His hair was straight and parted in the middle to expose some of his forehead. His lips rested in a slight pout; his brows furrowed as he struggled to slide his key correctly into the keyhole of his mailbox. You would have offered to lend him a hand, but he soon got the key in successfully. The view of his face was covered by the mailbox’s door.
You should have torn your gaze from his profile. If he caught you staring, it would be too awkward to extract yourself from the situation. You would stumble over your words as you tried to formulate an excuse. However, he was like a magnet. Your eyes stayed glued to him, scanning what little you could see now. Perhaps it was the fact his hair color had suddenly changed from a bright pink to a dark black. Although you enjoyed his magenta hair, the black hair made him more alluring. While the obvious change in his appearance caught your attention, you couldn’t deny that another reason why you were so fascinated with the man was that he was extremely handsome. From his soft eyes to his sharp jawline; it was difficult to ignore him.
San has been your neighbor for almost a year now. Recalling his move-in day brought a smile to your face. Not just because he was your gorgeous new neighbor, but because his friends came and helped him move his furniture and boxes. You were leaving your apartment to run a grocery errand and had stumbled upon yelling whispers. His friends were trying to stay quiet amongst their chaos, but it was clear whispering was not their forte. Although you didn’t stay for long, you had gathered they were arguing about how to get your neighbor’s couch through his door. Through the havoc, you had caught your new neighbor rolling his eyes with a smile on his face as he carried a box inside behind them. They were finished by the time you had come back from your grocery shopping. And even though you didn’t see your neighbor and his friends, you could faintly hear them through the door. Usually, the noise would slowly boil your blood, but it was hard to get irritated by the contagious laughing next door.
A soft click and the rattling of keys tore you from your memories. Much to your horror, you were still staring at your neighbor. You ripped your gaze to your own open mailbox and hastily grabbed what little mail you had to distract yourself. However, your stare didn’t go unnoticed as you swore you saw his lips curl into a small smile before he left without a word.
Your shoulders sagged when he was out of your vision, eyes dropping down to the two envelopes in your hand. You had never been the greatest with keeping up with checking your mail, but after your neighbor made himself a home next door, getting your mail was the highlight of your days. It became an excuse to get a glimpse of the eye candy living adjacent to you.
Eventually, you would grow out of this strange attraction you had for your neighbor. At least you hoped you would. You had realized trying to start a conversation was harder than you imagined. It wasn’t because he gave you the cold shoulder, but you just couldn’t bring yourself to say something to him. Every time you had built up the courage, your throat would close up and prevent any words from escaping. You wouldn’t be surprised if he thought you were a creep at this point. He never struck a conversation either. Maybe you had already scared him away.
The thought had a sigh leave your lips. You didn’t want to do that.
You shut your mailbox and twisted the key, locking it. You stared at the small, metal door. Today will be the last day for a while, you told the inanimate object. You were going to give your neighbor some space.
It was time to let go of the silly crush you had formed. It wasn’t going to go anywhere.
Choi San was a quiet man.
He kept to himself and was never the cause for any ruckus that occurred in your apartment complex. Well, he may have been if he was with his friends, but never alone was he any trouble. He was an enigma, and you couldn’t help but feel more drawn to him because of it. You wanted to know him for more than a pretty face.
Five weeks passed when you didn’t check your mailbox every other day. You had been accustomed to visiting your mailbox frequently, so it felt strange not to. Any time you had seen San, it was simply through passing. He would be leaving his apartment while you were entering yours or vice versa. You kept your gaze averted, forcing yourself to resist the urge to steal a glance. It wasn’t easy. Though, getting rid of any addiction was always difficult. No matter how weird it sounded, you had come to terms you were addicted to San. At least, you were addicted to the attraction you felt when you spotted him. You shouldn’t have been so down the first time you skipped going to your mailbox. Whatever trance you were lulled under in his presence was too strong to ignore.
You shook your head to yourself when you realized your thoughts were drifting to the man next door. Again. Goodness, you were hopeless.
You snatched your phone from the counter and strolled to your TV. You sunk into the cushions, pulling the blanket that was slung over the couch’s arm over your body. Despite it being the weekend, you had no plans on going out.
Last weekend was a friend’s birthday, and you were still trying to regain the energy you had expelled. The nights were fun, but you needed a few weeks to recuperate.
Twenty minutes passed before knocks at your door startled you. A quick glance at your phone’s clock informed you it was half-past eleven.
You were going to ignore the knocks as it was late, but the sounds persisted.
Sighing, you pushed off your blanket and shuffled to the door. You quietly glanced through the peephole and cursed inwardly when you saw who it was.
Normally, you would turn away from the door, but a part of you was worried about why your ex-boyfriend was knocking at your door so late. The relationship ended a little rocky, but you didn’t hate him. You hadn’t talked to him since and avoided his friends in case you would accidentally run into him. Because you didn’t dislike him enough to feed him to the wolves, you opened your door.
Hyunwoo’s eyes widen at the sound of your door opening.
“Oh, I’m sh-o glad you a-answered,” he sighed in relief, hand leaning against the frame of your door. Most of his weight was on that hand. You were sure if you moved it, he would lose his balance.
There was something off with him.
“Are you okay?” you questioned moving your hands slightly in front of you in case he was to fall.
“Peachy,” he answered. He tilted his head as his eyes took in your night attire. The long shirt and short shorts weren’t anything designer, but it had Hyunwoo smiling.
“You not occupied, are you? ‘M just wanna shee you. Was ‘bout’a go home, but Kwan dropped’e off here. I don’t remember telling ‘im that though,” Hyuneoo rambled, his other hand waving aimlessly as he spoke. His gaze dropped as his brows furrowed at his last sentence. He looked confused suddenly.
The more he spoke, the more you realized he was intoxicated. If it weren’t for his slurring, you would know from the smell of alcohol coming from his mouth.
It was late and you did not wish to spend your weekend taking care of your drunk ex.
You glanced behind him to see if his friend had come along too—hopefully sober. Unfortunately, all you saw was empty space.
“Where’s Kwan?” you wondered. Please say waiting in the car.
“Gone. Sh-aid ‘m betta’ off here.” Hyunwoo looked up at you again, face no longer scrunched with confusion.
“Is he coming back?”
Hyunwoo shrugged and looked down when he heard something drop. Following his gaze, you saw his phone on the floor. Before you could pick it up for him, he moved the arm resting against the door frame to grab it.
“Wait-” you tried to stop him.
“’S’kay,” he mumbled as he reached down. Barely a second later, he was losing his balance.
Your hands reached out to grab his shoulders, but his knees had already hit the floor.
“Owww,” he whined loudly, making you do a quick glance at the other doors around you. Great. Someone’s going to hear that.
“Is Kwan sober? I’ll call him and have him pick you back up.” You grabbed his phone and stuffed it in your pocket then pulled Hyunwoo up from the floor. You helped him lean against the wall outside your door.
“N-no!” Hyunwoo exclaimed and reached a hand to stop your movements. Your eyes widen at his fast reaction. “Not leaving ‘til you talk to me. Want’o talk.”
His head leaned back, Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed harshly. His hand still gripped your wrist. Despite your wishes, it appeared you would have to babysit him until you could figure out what to do.
“Why ‘ou look sh-ad?” Hyunwoo pouted. The hand on your wrist slowly moved up to your face. You grabbed his hand and stopped it from caressing your face. You moved it back to his side. “Always hated sh-eeing you sh-ad.”
You ignored his words.
“Let’s get you inside while I call a ride for you,” you suggested and started to slowly move to your door. Your phone was inside, and you didn’t want to leave him outside alone. You could drive him back to his home, but you didn’t want to be responsible for him any longer than you had to. You weren’t sure why Kwan would leave him here like this, but you weren’t happy with that knowledge.
Forgetting he was unstable, Hyunwoo hastily pushed off the wall to stop you from going inside. Although you didn’t understand what he was fearful of, you guessed it was because he wanted to stop you from calling someone.
“Hyunw-” you gasped as you felt him grip your waist firmly and begin to stumble.
Unlike before, he fell with you in his hold.
You staggered to the floor.
“Shit,” you hissed as you felt the heel of your palms burn from scraping the concrete floor. There was also an aching pain in your ass from falling backward on the hard ground.
Suddenly, the sound of a door clicking open stole your attention from the stinging in your hands.
Standing with a startled expression was your handsome neighbor. His hair was wavy and fluffy, making you want to ruffle his locks. He wore black sweatpants with white stripes down the sides and a grey muscle tee. You wondered how such a cute face could be on a body like that. The contrast was eye-catching.
After four weeks of barely seeing him, you wanted to stay seated on the floor with your eyes glued to his. Unfortunately, or fortunately, you didn’t have the chance because Hyunwoo’s voice brought you back to your situation.
“Don’t worry,” Hyunwoo reassured your neighbor, hand waving him off as he tried to stand up. “Jus’a’lil accsh-ident.”
San’s expression soon turned into concern as his eyes darted from Hyunwoo to you. He quickly moved forward and held out his hand.
“Are you hurt?” he asked as he waited for you to accept. His voice was tender like the gaze he had cast toward you.
Even though now was your chance to feel his skin upon yours, part of you didn’t want to. You were too embarrassed at having been caught on the floor with your drunk ex somewhere behind you. You couldn’t even entertain your lingering crush on him at the moment.
Because you didn’t want to make the situation any worse, you took his hand anyway and allowed him to pull you up. His hand was large around yours and cool to the touch. You muttered a thank you as he lifted you. He was stronger than you imagined, and you accidentally stumbled from the strength he used to help you stand.
His hands rested on your shoulders to steady you while yours came to rest on his biceps. A slight blush bloomed on your cheeks at the feel of his bare skin, and you quickly retracted your hands.
“I’m sorry,” he said sheepishly then glanced behind you, not bothered with you having touched him.
“It’s okay,” you murmured. “I’m okay-”
Abruptly, San quickly held out a hand and grabbed Hyunwoo, stopping him from falling on you again and dragging you all to the floor. San’s other hand still rested on your shoulder.
He looked at you after studying Hyunwoo for a moment. “Can you walk?”
Once you nodded, San moved the hand that was on you to grab Hyunwoo. He could hold him up better.
“Did you want him in your home, or should I rest him against the wall?” San questioned, quickly assessing Hyunwoo’s state. Although you both have never spoken to each other, the only form of exchange were head nods, you had heard his voice on occasions. Sometimes while he was on the phone or if his friends came over. Nevertheless, his voice was as smooth as you remembered. You would have indulged in the way it comforted you if it weren’t for this particular situation.
“’M can walk!” Hyunwoo scoffed and attempted to push San’s hands from him. “Yn, tell ‘im to let me go.”
“Follow me,” you quickly said and ignored your ex’s whining. You didn’t want another neighbor to see what was happening. You stepped inside your apartment again, holding the door open as San helped Hyunwoo stagger in. You gestured to the couch then shut the door.
“Whatcha’ doing, man? I sh-aid ‘m can walk!”
San disregarded Hyunwoo’s pleads as he guided him to your couch. He eased your ex down on your couch, having to quickly push him back onto the cushions when Hyunwoo tried to stand again.
“You’ll be fine. Just sit for a while,” San said calmly to Hyunwoo, yet there was a firmness to it that made it sound more like a command than a light suggestion.
Hyunwoo huffed in his face but stayed seated finally.
“Yn,” Hyunwoo called. “He ca’eave now.” He gestured to San who was hovering near the couch in case Hyunwoo decided to kiss the floor again.
You glanced at San, wanting to tell him you were okay now, but part of you didn’t want him to go. Whether it be because you needed his strength if Hyunwoo were to fall again or if you simply wanted to be in his presence without standing near your mailbox.
As if San could sense your hesitancy, he offered, “I can stay if you want. I don’t mind.”
“But I do!” Hyunwoo protested.
“That’d be nice,” you sighed, a headache forming.
“It’s not ‘ike you’o ignore me,” Hyunwoo interjected; his body sagged against the cushions as if feeling defeated.
“May you give us a moment? Sorry. You can sit over there,” you asked San and pointed at your dining room across the room.
“Of course,” he answered politely and took a seat at your dining table. He pulled out his phone and averted his attention from you. You figured he did that more so out of courtesy than boredom.
You moved closer to the couch to grab your phone.
“Why did Kwan leave you here?” you asked Hyunwoo. One of his hands reached up to grab your forearm. He stared at you with half-lidded eyes, lips tugged down in a frown.
“Something ‘bout me bein’ annoying. Sh-aid I needed to talk’o you.” He tugged, rougher than you believed he meant to, but it caused you to fall next to him on the couch. For some reason, your eyes quickly glanced at San, but he was still looking at his phone screen.
“Okay,” you said slowly. “What did you want to talk about?”
As you waited for his answer, you scrolled through your contacts to find Kwan.
“Us-h,” Hyunwoo said and gently rubbed your forearm. When he noticed your attention was heavily directed to your phone instead of him, he placed a hand on yours that was holding the device.
You finally glanced in his direction.
“Maybe we should talk about it another time,” you lied and tried to keep your voice low. Even though it was probably best to talk about that topic when he was sober, you didn’t want to talk about it at all. You felt the conversation would be redundant as you’ve already talked things through. At least, that’s how you felt.
“Pfft,” he scoffed and pushed himself farther into your cushions. Maybe he thought he could embed himself in your furniture so he couldn’t leave. “You’re ignorin’eh too much for me’o believe that.”
“Hyunwoo,” you sighed and gently removed his hand from yours. “It’s been a year already. I thought you moved on.”
As discreetly as you could, you began searching through your contacts. When you found Kwan’s name, you sent a quick text telling him to pick Hyunwoo up if he was sober.
“A year?” Hyunwoo wondered. The look on his face showed he didn’t realize how long it’s been. You barely have seen Hyunwoo after the breakup–could count the number of interactions you had with him on your hands. Sometimes it was at a shared friend’s event or through passing at local stores since you both lived in the same city. Regardless, it was never more than 15 minutes at a time.
Hyunwoo’s shoulders sagged, eyes squeezing shut as if to erase that thought from his mind. “Right,” he mumbled more to himself.
A vibration in your hand turned your gaze away from your ex. Luckily, Kwan was fine to come back. A silent sigh left your lips as you felt relieved that you wouldn’t have to drive him home.
“Get some rest, okay?” you said. You wanted to say you’d talk about it later, but you knew you didn’t want to, so you refrained from the offer.
Hyunwoo’s energy must have decreased exceptionally. He simply nodded and let his head fall back. Gently, you adjusted him so he was laying down. You waited for a few minutes in case he woke up and became needy again. When he didn’t, you carefully got up, placed his phone next to him, and went to where San was seated.
“I’m sorry you had to deal with this, but thank you for helping,” you said as you sat down across from him.
San tucked his phone into his pocket and sent you a reassuring smile. Your eyes flickered to his small dimples. You never saw them too much, but they always had your heart warm in your chest. They made him look much cuter.
“You don't need to apologize,” San assured. “I’m sorry you had to get stuck with your drunk friend.”
You opened your mouth to correct him, but why should you? It didn’t matter if San thought he was your friend or your ex. The details were irrelevant.
Instead, you said, “I’m still grateful you helped me.”
“‘Course,” he murmured.
His gaze moved to your clasped hands on the table. You started to feel conscious of them under his stare and began to tuck them beneath the table. However, San was quick to stop the movement.
He slowly turned your hands over, palms up. You looked at him confused.
“You should clean this,” he instructed kindly and traced a small area on your hands.
You averted your gaze down quickly.
On both palms were red areas with scratch marks. The areas weren’t big, but you could still see the worry in San’s eyes.
The warmth in your chest spread at the fact he cared about your wellbeing even though he didn’t really know you and the injuries weren’t major.
“Come,” he said and carefully rose from his chair. The layout of the apartment must be similar to his because he navigated to the kitchen sink with ease. That or he saw it when he sat at the table.
Silently, he turned on the facet, checking the temperature several times as the seconds passed. You watched with more attention required. You had never imagined the neighbor you’ve been smitten with would be in your apartment. Let alone helping you clean a wound.
You took the time to stare at his profile while his focus was on the running water. He had small stud earrings and his skin was light honey. His hair fell in front of his face, the wavy locks concealing his eyes. You were partly glad for that so he couldn’t see you staring…again.
Once San was satisfied, he hastily washed his hands and then held out a hand. You quickly placed a hand in his. Probably a little too fast, but you didn’t want to be caught distracted.
He led your hand under the water. His movements were gentle as he cleaned your scrapes. For someone who was physically strong, he knew when to be tender. After he cleaned both hands, he dried them off with a clean towel you had handed him.
“Do you have band-aids?” he asked while drying your hands.
“I’ll be fine,” you brushed off his question. Not because you didn’t have any, but because you already felt he did enough. You didn’t want him to think you were totally useless.
San chuckled lowly and peered at your face through his hair. You had the urge to move his hair to see him clearly but resisted.
“I know,” he said, “but just let me play doctor for a few more minutes.”
His teasing tone caught you off guard and you lowered your head to hide the small smile forming on your lips.
“I-I’ll go get them then,” you replied and left to retrieve them before he could stop you. You could hear the faint sound of his laughter as you moved to your bathroom.
You wished you weren’t so nervous being in his presence but after months of admiring from afar, you couldn’t stop fumbling over your words and thoughts.
When you came back, San was leaning against the kitchen counter, hands resting behind him on the countertop. The position had his shirt stretch slightly across his torso. While he had broad shoulders, his waist tapered to give him an attractive figure. His gaze was on your ex sleeping on your couch. You couldn’t read his expression and part of you wondered what he was thinking.
“Band-aids, Dr. Choi,” you announced and held out the box.
San turned his head to you, a smile forming on his lips at your joke. He stood up straighter at the title and took the box from your hold.
“Thank you, Ms. Yn,” he played along. He pulled out some band-aids, picked the correct sizes, then started to open them.
“Now I’m not sure if you’re my patient or my assistant. I don’t think it’s appropriate for doctors to ask their patients to bring them items.”
You giggled at his dilemma and held out your hands when he gestured for them.
“I can be whatever you want me to be,” you teased, not taking the time to consider the multiple meanings that one sentence held.
Your response had San faltering in his movements, thumbs paused as he was in the middle of pressing the ends of the band-aid flat against your skin.
“I-I meant that I didn’t care if I was a patient or an a-”
You stuttered as you tried to explain yourself; however luckily for you, loud knocking interrupted you.
The booming sounds of the knocks startled San and he quickly jumped away from you, letting the second band-aid flutter to the floor and a small yelp escaped his mouth. You bit your lower lip to stop smiling at his reaction. You hadn’t even considered that San might be easily scared. Before you could go down the rabbit hole of thinking of his other traits, another knock emitted.
There was a groan near the couch, and you realized the knocking must be Kwan.
You quickly went to the door and swung it open, not bothering to look through the peephole.
“Long time no see,” Kwan said with a smile that didn’t seem genuine. You had met him through Hyunwoo and while he liked you initially, he started to dislike you after your and Hyunwoo’s breakup.
“Hey,” you greeted. “He’s on the couch sleeping. I can help move him to the car.”
You stepped aside to let him in. As you were about to guide him to where Hyunwoo was, he stopped you.
“What did he tell you?”
“What?” you questioned as you shut the door.
“Do you know why I left him here?” Kwan asked, not bothering to explain himself. His voice was pretty hushed. Maybe he didn’t want to wake Hyunwoo.
“Something about him being annoying,” you recalled.
Kwan scoffed. “That, but also because he’s been so pathetic lately. All he talks about is you and how you broke his heart.”
You gave him a confused expression; you didn’t like where this was going.
“The breakup was mutual. How could I br-”eak his heart? You stopped yourself from asking because there was no point. You knew Kwan would just formulate a reason that would make you feel guilty. Although you didn’t want to hurt Hyunwoo, you both ended the relationship in agreement. You were simply going in different directions in life.
“Look,” you sighed. “He isn’t my responsibility, and he needs to move on. We’re not getting back together.”
You stood your ground even when Kwan sent a cold glare in your direction.
“Even if we did, you think I would be happy? You think me being unhappy would make Hyunwoo happy?” you tried to explain.
“You could be happy if you just-”
“No,” you stopped him with a raised hand. “I’ve moved on. Hyunwoo is a good guy-” Kwan scoffed. “-But I don’t see a future with him.”
“You’re so-!”
“Kwan?”
Both you and Kwan moved further into the apartment at his name being called. Hyunwoo sat up on the couch and began to stand. For once you were grateful for Hyunwoo. You didn’t want to hear the rest of Kwan’s sentence; it was most likely filled with profanities.
“Hey, buddy.” Kwan moved to help Hyunwoo stand. “You ready to go?”
Hyunwoo hummed and then looked at you.
“Call me later, ‘kay?” He spoke slowly, voice a little groggy.
You stilled at the question. You would call if he wasn’t going to try to convince you to get back together, but every conversation after the breakup consisted of him dropping hints of wanting to be with you again.
You must have stayed silent for too long because Hyunwoo exhaled a defeated sigh. Kwan sent you another scowl, threatening with his gaze to say yes.
“It’s fine. Never mind,” Hyunwoo said and waved his hand as if to push away the question that was hanging in the air.
“Why can’t you just talk to him like an adult, Yn?” Kwan interrupted rudely.
“It’s fine, Kwan,” Hyunwoo repeated. “‘M not gonna’ force-”
“No, Hyun, you deserve a simple talk with her.” Kwan directed his attention to you again. “It’s the least she can do.”
You stared at him incredulously. He’s acting as if you cheated on Hyunwoo with ten guys, but you didn’t do such a thing. Why would Hyunwoo agree to break up if he really didn’t want to?
“There’s nothing else to say,” you argued.
“Evidently that’s a lie because Hyunwoo’s been moping-”
“How is that my fault?” you snapped.
“Are you serious, Yn?!” Kwan exclaimed.
“If she doesn’t want to call, then she doesn’t want to call.”
The new voice had all three of you turning toward the kitchen. You had forgotten San was still here in the midst of your personal chaos. San’s once calm demeanor turned fierce. You had never seen this side of San, but you had a suspicion he was holding back on saying more.
Kwan let out a dry laugh.
“Ah, I see,” he said and shook his head. “When did you find him? A day before you broke up with Hyun?”
San clenched his jaw, body tensed as he forced himself to stay put when all he wanted to do was kick him out. Maybe not with force... Unless he had to. He saw himself as a lover, not a fighter, but that didn't matter if you were in danger.
It was clear Kwan had made a false persona of you. You were sure he believed you had done something sinister to Hyunwoo that led to the breakup. Though, it also made you realize that Hyunwoo let him believe that. Did he even try to save your face?
“I think it’s time for you to go. Thanks for picking him up,” you said and disregarded Kwan’s gibe. You didn't need, nor want, to listen to him anymore.
You moved toward the door, but Hyunwoo and Kwan didn’t follow.
“Will you call him?” Kwan asked sternly. He wasn’t going to leave unless you agreed.
Exasperated, you opened your mouth to say fine, but San cut you off.
“It’s clear she has nothing more to say. Drop it and leave.”
“The question wasn’t directed to you, pretty boy,” Kwan said, rolling his eyes.
“Yet you’re meddling with issues they need to solve on their own,” San retorted. His eyes were glued to Kwan’s. If San had acted like this when you first saw him, you would have avoided him at all costs. Everyone has their dark side, per se, but San’s was much darker than you had imagined for someone who seemed like a loving cat.
“I have to because Hyun won’t gro-!”
“Let’s just go. M’ head’s killing me, man,” Hyunwoo said, body struggling to stay upright any longer. Although he wasn’t completely sober, the nap at least knocked some sense in him.
Kwan pressed his lips together but began to walk toward the door. You held the door open and watched as they made their way to the exit.
As they passed you, Hyunwoo tripped. You reached out to grab him, but Kwan held a hand to stop yours. The quick action had startled you and you pulled back. You could hear San’s hurried footsteps as he came closer. You weren’t entirely sure why he was suddenly by your side, but you guessed it was in case Kwan tried to do something.
“Don’t touch him,” Kwan snarled at you and led him out the door without your help.
The second they were out the door, you shut and locked it.
You pressed your back against the door and inhaled a deep breath. Your eyes stilled on the ceiling, trying to ease your tense shoulders as the seconds ticked by.
“Do they visit often?” San asked, pulling you from your thoughts.
“No. They haven’t been here in a long time,” you said and glanced down at your feet. Why did Kwan have to stir up unwanted emotions?
“If they come back, you can just call me and I’ll come over,” he said earnestly.
“They won’t harm me. I don’t need to burden you.”
“They are capable of it, though, and I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
You looked up at San, head tilting as you tried to force yourself to be rational. The sentence had butterflies flapping in your stomach that you tried to ignore. He was just being friendly–probably would say that to anyone. Knowing how sweet and protective he seemed to be could confirm that suspicion.
“Thanks,” you muttered. “But I still don-”
“What’s your number?”
You stuttered incoherent words as you tried to grasp his question. In the back of your head, you knew he was asking so you could call him if you needed his help. Though, you couldn’t stop the thought of him asking you this for another reason.
“Should I just give you mine instead?” San chuckled softly when you didn’t answer right away.
“No- I mean sure- No, wait, I can just give you mine.”
San laughed again and pulled his phone out. He navigated his way to his contacts and added a new one.
“Number?” he asked again.
This time, you gave it to him.
“I sent you a text so you have my number. I’m serious; let me know if they come back. You won’t be bothering me. I’ll probably come over if I hear them anyway.”
“Why?” you asked before you could stop yourself.
San gave you a small smile. “Because I can’t let my mail buddy get hurt.”
“W-what?” you gasped and looked at him with wide eyes. San laughed, a corner of his lips quirking up in a smirk. The sound of his laughter had you smiling involuntarily; however, they quickly dipped down when he continued.
“You’re not very discrete,” San said teasingly.
“What would I need to be discreet about?”
“You know, I kept thinking I had food or something on my face,” he started to say, “but then I just realized you simply enjoyed looking at me.”
San grinned wider, eyes turning into crescents as he watched your expression change into horror and embarrassment.
“I’m s-sorry!” you said. You were uncertain what else to say and you sure weren’t going to admit the reason why. The embarrassment you felt now would last a solid six months, even more. You didn’t want to add additional time. However, it seemed San was having fun seeing you flustered.
“Why sorry? Who said I didn’t like it?”
A small yelp left your lips, and you brought your hands to your face to hide your flushed cheeks.
“Why haven’t you been coming to the mailboxes lately? I was getting worried.” Although San’s tone was still light, you could catch the hint of concern.
“I went.” Not entirely a lie because you did go, but very briefly and at times that no one would be there. “Must have missed each other.”
San quirked an eyebrow up in disbelief. “I highly doubt that,” he said and gave you an encouraging smile to tell the truth.
“F-fine!” you huffed and pulled your hands from your face. “I didn’t want to creep you out.”
San stared at you long enough to make you feel awkward. You were about to apologize again when San spoke.
“Why would a pretty girl staring at me creep me out? I found it endearing.”
You were sure your cheeks were already pink. Now, they’re bright red.
“Don’t say that,” you said bashfully.
“Mhm,” he hummed as if in thought and kept a smile on his face. “Very cute indeed.”
His reply made you feel he was talking to himself. You hadn’t prepared for San to say such things. Even when you daydreamed of interactions with him, they never turned out like this.
“Would you be okay with hanging out together sometime? Not just when you’re in need of a knight in– Actually, I guess I would be a doctor in sweats instead of a knight.”
You laughed at his joke, recalling how he had tended to your wounds ever so carefully. The lighthearted tone had eased your nervousness.
“Yeah, I would like that,” you answered with a smile of your own.
San nodded. “I’m glad to hear that. How about tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow?” you asked, surprised. You were excited to finally be able to learn more about San, but tomorrow felt too soon. You needed time to mentally prepare.
“About five? I would say earlier, but it’s already so late that I doubt either one of us will want to be up early.”
At the mention of time, you quickly reached for your phone to check. However, you had left it somewhere and from where you stood, you couldn’t see the clock in your kitchen.
“It’s two,” San said.
“O-oh wow. I’m sorry I kept you up.” You didn’t realize how long it’s been–how long you’ve been keeping San from sleeping.
“You apologize a lot, huh?” San observed to which you blushed again. “It’s okay, really. Don’t stress about it. I wanted to stay. So, what do you say? Tomorrow at five?”
“Where will we go?”
San shrugged. “I haven’t thought about that yet. Just wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I’m sure you’ll look b- I’m sure it won’t be anything fancy.”
San’s cheeks turned their own shade of rose as he quickly changed his sentence. Despite not knowing what he was going to say, you felt your heart beat a little quicker with the thought of what he had planned.
I’m sure you’ll look beautiful.
It may not be exact, but you let yourself indulge in what could be a false statement because it made you feel good. His pink cheeks were a good hint that you were probably correct, though.
It felt good to have him finally feel shy. It gave you some confidence.
“Okay then,” you said. “Tomorrow at five.”
San beamed at you. You couldn’t wait to see more of his smile.
“If they ever come back, call me. I don’t care if it’s four in the morning, okay? You have my number.”
“Okay,” you said and reluctantly moved off the door so you could open it.
“You mean it?”
“I do.”
And you did.
Because Choi San was such a caring person you could feel how genuine he was being. You hadn’t wanted to call him at first because you weren’t sure if he was just saying that to be polite. However, you could sense he was being serious with every fiber in his body. Plus, you believed him when he said he would come on his own accord if he heard anyone disturb you.
You slowly opened the door for him and watched as he stepped outside, hands digging into his pocket to retrieve his keys.
Before he stepped into his own apartment, he glanced at you.
“Sleep well, Ms. Yn,” he said sweetly.
You giggled at his reference. Playing along, you replied, “Goodnight, Dr. Choi.”
The warm smile on his handsome face was the last thing you could think of as you fell asleep, eager and anxious for tomorrow.
You weren’t sure where your and San’s relationship was going to go, whether it will be platonic or not. One thing was for sure, though. You wanted Choi San in your life simply because he brought a light you weren’t going to be able to replicate. And that alone was cherishable enough.
ATEEZ COMEBACK LET’S GO!!!!! I’M SO HYPED FOR IT. THESE PROMOTIONS ARE CREATIVE AND INCREDIBLE. I’m extremely amazed by the marketing strategies–unannounced posters, AirDropped codes??? These trailers for their movie comeback? Hello?! Stan Ateez lol. I love that they’re using their storyline to guide their promos. Also, my favorite stage on Kingdom was their Rhythm Ta performance, so I’m very anxious to see what all they’ve been working on. Anyway, I’m just excited to get more into the Ateez community. I need more fellow Atinys in my life! Please be my friend 😫 lol
Writing is little like running, we once heard, in that it is arduous and effort and hard work and pain and at the end, you finally sit down, and... ahhh. It feels good to have run, it feels good to have written. Admittedly this pearl of writing wisdom grated on the first read, as writing wisdom is wont to do. But on reflection, it is not without some merit. Writing is perhaps unique amongst the arts in that the act of doing so is just so strenuous, and such an effort of the will, and that time spent writing is marked more often by the time spent not writing. This is time spent looking out the window, making teas, and browsing the internet. Well, #writerblr, today is your un/lucky day (delete as appropriate) because today just so happens to be March 14, 2023: National Write Your Story Day!
And where better place to start than here on Tumblr? Or at #writerblr, to be precise. There is a community of thousands who, like you, are enraptured with the gift that is creating a story. It is a community awash with writing prompts, short stories, analysis and discourse, and some unique perspectives to help you engage with that most elusive of activities: storytelling. If nothing else, there's a mass of fellow writers in whom to find solidarity in procrastination.

❥ part of my Halloweek 2021 celebration
❥ summary: Since your egg hadn't hatched in time, that meant you had to spend your Summer in school. And to keep you company you had none other than Jeong Yunho.
❥ A/N: Hello, how are you today? This is my first one-shot for ateez and the second one for Halloweek 2021! I hope you enjoy reading this one because I had so much fun writing it, makes me want to write in this universe again in the future. As always, happy reading!
You watched as everyone walked to the main hall excitedly, gushing over their spirit animals and what their eggs had revealed. Some students had their animals on their shoulders, others carried them in golden ornaments such as bracelets, earrings or even rings. However, you couldn’t celebrate with them. As much you wanted to be happy for your friends and classmates, you couldn’t help but feel like you were failing. After all, your egg hadn’t hatched. And that could only mean that you hadn’t mastered your magic yet.
The main hall had been prepared for the graduation ceremony. From the ceiling, large and bright chandeliers hung, the night sky in the distance. From each interior balcony draped different banners that moved and changed colours, showcasing the different houses and families some of these students would be serving after they graduated. Some of the representatives awaited in the balconies, looking closely at the students that approached their respective chairs.
You parted ways with the other students and went to sit behind the teacher’s council. There, all chairs were empty, and you could feel the heavy gaze of some of your teachers on you. You smiled politely at them before sitting down, making sure your family emblem pin was visible on your chest, above your heart.
Soon enough, most students were all inside the room, chatting expectantly, murmuring between each other when their eyes landed on you. You couldn’t help but feel humiliated. You had been at the top of your classes ever since you were eight, and now, you wouldn’t graduate. All because your egg hadn’t hatched. It was ridiculous, to say the least.
“Good evening, students!” The school principal spoke and the lights dimmed slightly. After a while, the conversations ceased to exist. “Welcome to our last graduation ceremony of the year.”
Everyone clapped and you joined in, not as excited. Part of you wished you would have skipped this ceremony entirely but you wanted to see your friends graduate, hoping you could catch a glimpse of your family in the balconies. Unsurprisingly, none of them was attending tonight. Either because they were busy or found you a disgrace to your family name, you didn’t know. It also didn’t matter right now.
“As you are aware, this is now the time where you will be presented to the different families who would like to request your aid. You shall stand up whenever your name is called and reach the centre of the hall, to showcase your magic abilities. Best of luck to all of you.”
More claps and you leaned back on your chair, crossing your legs. One by one, each student was called. The principal went from the higher to the lower rankings, and almost everyone did the same: honour their family by showcasing the power that pulsed through them, a small segment of interaction with their spirit animal, and a final moment where they showed a secondary power they had mastered. This final part was mostly to show the families that certain students wished to serve them.
“How would you do it?” You jumped in your chair and glanced at who had spoken, raising an eyebrow. Yunho was sitting next to you, waiting expectantly for your answer.
“What are you doing here?” You whispered to him, crossing your arms.
“The same as you, apparently. Your egg didn’t hatch?”
“I wouldn’t be here if it had,” you sighed and focused your attention on the student performing right now, trying to ignore Yunho.
“I wouldn’t honour my family.” He answered his question and you looked at him, surprised. He shrugged, leaning closer to you so you could hear him better. “I only know how to grow plants, that’s literally all my family does. I’d prefer to showcase that I have mastered both air currents and sea currents. I’d make a great sailor!”
“Good for you…?” You couldn’t care less about Yunho or who he wanted to aid or serve with his magic. It confused you why he was acting all friendly with you when throughout all these years, he was constantly trying to sabotage you and making you lose the top spot. However, that hadn’t led him anywhere, he was just where you were. On the sidelines, watching people who always ranked lower than you graduating. It wasn’t fair.
“Did you know no dragons hatched this year?” He continued the conversation, glancing at you. “I wonder if one of us has a dragon. I truly hope I get a red one, they are so cool.”
“I wish for a unicorn. Maybe a pegasus. Dragons are overrated.”
“They spit fire, Y/N. And make really awesome bracelets! Besides, unicorns don’t exist.” He spoke that final part with a mocking tone. He really couldn’t tell when you were being sarcastic, could he? He always took everything you said as literal.
“In your world, they don’t. But that’s because you’re boring and rarely use your imagination.”
“Oh, trust me I can use my imagination. I mean… look at how many creative ways I have found to annoy you.”
“And look at how many of them failed.” You looked at him, slightly defeated with yourself. “I just want my egg to hatch so I don’t have to look at you anymore.”
“I’m kinda good-looking, though.” You rolled your eyes. Yunho was always so full of himself. “And I have come a long way, you know? I get better as I age.”
“I disagree, but my opinion doesn’t matter to you, does it?”
You didn’t wait for an answer. Slowly, you stood up from your chair and walked to the exit, trying your best to remain in the shadows so no one would notice you leaving. Students remained as the ceremony was far from being over, but you couldn’t watch any more of it.
That could’ve been you, showcasing your power and abilities, getting selected by one of the most powerful and well-respected families of the entire magic realm. And yet, all of that would remain in your imagination. You had missed your window, you hadn’t mastered your magic yet.
Instead of heading to the dorms, you walked to the secondary hall and entered the library. It was empty at this time of the night, except for a couple of students that were cramming for tests or exams last minute. Some of them lifted their eyes as you passed by, but you ignored them. When you found a small hidden corner, you removed your family pin from your shirt and shoved it in the pocket of your pants, focusing on the books in front of you, tracing their spines with your fingers, reading their titles carefully.
You grabbed a few whose titles related to delayed magic manifestation and walked to one of the tables, sitting down silently. With your finger, you lit a candle next to you and placed it on the small metal support, its light flickering and illuminating your desk.
Page after page, book after book, you tried to find any information on what could be delaying your egg from hatching. What was there for you to master after you had aced every single class? What was preventing you from graduating?
Your eyes landed on a page with a couple of testimonies from students that had been in a similar situation to yours. They had been great at their powers, but for some reason, their eggs weren’t hatching. Some ended up giving up on their gifts while others pushed through with no success. But there was one that was able to overcome his struggles. That gave you some hope.
“Whatever you are struggling with, you have to let go of it. Whatever you are worried about, you must overcome it. Magic is not just about theory. It’s about having the right mindset to be greater than you already are. While you think you are lacking, you will never become complete. You need to let go of your fear of failure.”
You read those words repeatedly, hoping that inside of your mind, they would unlock something, showcase you a hidden message you hadn’t discovered yet. Still, and even though they were vague, you couldn’t help but relate to it.
All your life, all you wanted was to be the best, to prove yourself and your worth to your family. And more often than not, you had proved it, you had always succeeded at any challenge presented to you. And yet, you still felt like you weren’t enough, like nothing you’d ever do would be good enough. That was part of the problem, you were sure of it. However, you weren’t sure how you could overcome it.
This wasn’t like magic theory where everything was explained and you only had to follow the steps and perfect it. When it came to this final stage, no answers were presented to you, no steps to follow were given to you.
You’d have to figure it out by trial and error. And while doing so, you’d have to learn how to fail and accept that those failures were also part of your growth.
The corridors of the school became emptier as soon as the end of the school year arrived. Only students with failed subjects and unhatched eggs stayed behind. You and Yunho were the only ones in your class and year that remained which meant you’d be spending a lot of time together. That didn’t please you and he also didn’t seem to be on board with the whole idea either.
After all your friends left the school grounds for the last time, you went to collect your stuff in your dorm. Now that it was summer, most students that stayed behind would be relocated to a smaller dorm in the east wing of the main building. You had never been there, as every year around this time you returned home to spend some time with your family or at least, attempt to. They were always too busy to give you any attention.
The room you would be staying in was small, but it was an individual one which was good. This meant you wouldn’t be disturbed by anyone else and could stay up later than usual, as no curfew existed during summer. Yunho would be staying in the opposite room to yours, as it was easier for teachers and staff to get a hold of you whenever they needed your help for tasks. When you realized that you’d be spending your summer cleaning the school grounds with Yunho as your company you wanted to melt into a wall and hide there for the rest of your existence. When did things get so unpleasant to you?
Carefully, you placed your egg on your desk, near the sunlight. You kept it on its small basket, a blanket under it to keep it warm and cushioned. Its shell shined under the sun, small little speckles that looked like glitter created a pattern that moved slowly in waves and spirals, something that told you the creature inside was still alive and growing. You caressed it softly, the egg bigger than when you got it when you were younger.
“Hang in there, little buddy,” you whispered to it, smiling. “We’ll meet each other soon, I promise.”
“Talking to your egg won’t make it hatch faster, you know?” You turned around at the sound of Yunho’s voice and saw him leaning on your door frame. He looked sad, exhausted even. “We were called to clean the alchemy labs. We should… head there so we could get it done faster. I don’t want to spend my entire summer cleaning stuff.”
“That makes the two of us,” you admitted and quickly put on your jacket, placing your family pin on the lapel. You patted it down and let out a deep sigh, a bitter smile on your lips. “Let’s go.”
Yunho and you made your way to the experimental magic part of the school, crossing long hallways, taking shortcuts you didn’t even know existed but that you trusted Yunho to know the way out of.
Finally, you reached the alchemy labs. A row of labs stood on each side of the corridor, each one dedicated to a speciality or an ability. Here, research was made and new spells were tested, potions were created, new elements were synthesized. Oftentimes, new magical discoveries came from these labs which was always a reason to celebrate.
Slowly, the two of you started to work in silence, cleaning the counters, storing materials, wiping floors. You’d glance at each other occasionally but none of you said anything for a while.
“Why do you… always take it off?” He asked as he held a trash bag for you to put scraps of paper inside. “Your… family emblem.”
“I change clothes,” you said, trying to keep your interactions to the bare minimum. “So, I have to change my pin as well.”
“I have a pin for each of my outfits.” He smiled proudly. “You only have one?”
“One is more than enough.”
“What if you lose it?”
“Then I don’t have to wear it. Anything else you want to know?” You looked him in the eyes and he gulped, looking at the bag between you.
“Do you think… we’ll make it?” He lowered his arms and you kept your eyes on him, seeing the bubbly, confident Yunho replaced by a worried and scared version of him. “I’ve looked into it. They say that if our eggs don’t hatch in three weeks from now, then there’s a chance they won’t hatch at all. I don’t… I don’t want all of these years to be in vain, you know? I worked hard. I…”
He shook his head, unable to continue. You stopped what you were doing and took a deep breath. As much as you and Yunho didn’t get along, you couldn’t help but feel for him. He was the first in his family line to be accepted at this school and he never took that for granted. Sure, he was a pain to deal with sometimes, but he always did his best. Maybe that was why you didn’t like him that much. He was effortlessly good at everything he did. And yet, he never let it show.
“I don’t have an answer for that question,” you admitted and he looked at you, a hopeful look in his eyes. “Who would’ve thought, Y/N doesn’t know the answer to a question, oh my!”
“I should get you to the infirmary,” he jokingly said, smiling. “We are living in unprecedented times.”
“We’re not well,” you continued your task, smiling as well. “None of us knows the answer! What should we do?!”
“Professor Green is already fuming!” You laughed and Yunho quickly did his best impersonation of your old magic theory teacher. “How do you not know the answer?! It’s written right there, in your books, crickets! Besides, you could use a mindreading spell to figure it out from my mind!”
“I never dared to read his mind,” you admitted, a shiver going down your spine at the thought of it.
“It’s not that bad. He mostly thinks about his dog, the next meal he is going to have, and the answer to his questions.”
“Why does he call us crickets, though? Is it like an endearment term, an annoyed one… what’s the deal with that?”
“He uses it as a replacement to swear words.” You couldn’t help but laugh, causing Yunho’s smile to widen. “Also, he really considered you his prodigy. I kind of despised you more for that reason.”
Finally, the trash bag was full and Yunho closed it, placing it outside the lab, quickly returning to join you. You followed him as he moved around the room, the two of you more relaxed than before.
“You know, I… was always jealous of you.” He looked at you, lips parted slightly in surprise. “You were always good at everything and had great social skills. And your family loves you a lot and they are proud of you, no matter what. Part of me always resented you for that.”
“You forgot the good-looking.” You rolled your eyes and found him staring at you, kindly. “I didn’t know that. About you. You… always have it together, everyone can rely on you. And you were happy about it. I always thought you’d graduate earlier even.”
“That clearly didn’t happen, did it?”
The two of you laughed and exited the lab, leaving everything clean. You left the bags behind, all labelled according to what they were for someone else to take care of them.
“I think I want a dragon now too,” you eventually said as you climbed the stairs. “A blue one, though. They can swim underwater and spit fire.”
“I thought dragons were overrated?” He raised an eyebrow and you shrugged. “I still think red ones are better, you know?”
“But they can’t swim.”
“But they can fly. I’ve always wanted to have a dragon so I could fly.”
“That’s cute.” He was cute when he was excited about something. “No one in my family has a blue dragon. They are the rarest kind of spirit animals.”
“How come?” Yunho asked, confused. “I thought all dragon species were rare.”
“Blue dragons are the result of a crossing between the red dragon and an extinct breed called the large sea serpent. You didn’t study spirit animal evolution?” He shook his head.
“I skipped that lecture, I didn’t think it would be that interesting. I chose water alchemy instead. Boring but extremely useful. Now I can make water bubbles in the air and use them to attack people.”
“Cool?” You weren’t sure how useful that could be, at least to you. But it made sense for him. “I mean, you want to work on a ship, right? Knowing how to master water can be useful.”
“See? That’s what I thought!”
Finally, the two of you reached the cafeteria. Yunho ran towards the door and opened it for you and you thanked him with a smile. Soon enough, he was next to you again with his eyes focused on you, a curious expression on his face.
“But why the sudden change about blue dragons?” He asked. “Tell me more, I want to know why you like them so much.”
You stopped walking, watching as Yunho joined the end of the line for lunch, looking back at you, confused. He sighed and walked back to you, fixing his hair.
“I figured we could try and be friends, you know? I mean, at this point, what would we be fighting for? We’ve achieved everything there is to achieve, there are no more rankings to try and be number one. So why not… just try? Do you plan on being sarcastic and mean to me all summer?”
“I don’t-“
“Good. Then I won’t call myself good-looking anymore. Although I do enjoy seeing you roll your eyes at that. You’re cute when you’re annoyed at me.”
Your eyes widened at Yunho’s comment and he smiled at you, victoriously. You chuckled and joined him on the way to the cafeteria line, trying to prevent him from checking your flustered cheeks.
Part of you hoped that Yunho wouldn’t use a mindreading spell on you right now. He couldn’t know what you were thinking, you didn’t even want to admit it to yourself.
You didn’t want to admit that you were happy that right now, you and Yunho were trying to be friends.
“I have been doing some reading on blue dragons.” Yunho entered your room in his pyjamas, glasses on and a book in his hand. “Did you know their scales have healing properties? They are great for inland combat!”
“They are!” You nodded, turning to face him. He sat at the end of your bed while you remained on your chair, looking at him.
It had been a couple of weeks since your first day of summer duties at the school grounds, but right now you were enjoying it more. Yunho and you had grown closer to each other and now, your evenings were spent in each other’s rooms reading books or discussing topics you were both interested in.
Every night, he would come to visit you before you both headed to bed, always ready to strike a conversation with you. Thankfully, the person guarding this part of the dorm didn’t mind you two being together in the same room, as long as the door remained open.
“What’s the matter?” You asked him, seeing his confused expression as he looked at the pages of a book in front of him. He lifted his eyes to look at you and pointed to a piece of text in his book.
“It says here that blue dragons are… rare because they hatch in pairs from different eggs. It’s usually that way so they can… reproduce. They are also a symbol for soulmates and whoever has them will live a successful, long and adventurous life.”
“They sound like my kind of spirit animal.”
“Yes, but do you know anyone with a blue dragon? They need to meet their mate within a week otherwise, they can’t achieve their fullest potential and your magic would never fully excel. I didn’t know spirit animals also had limitations.”
“Of course, they do.” You stood up from your chair and went to sit next to him, grabbing the book from his hands. “Spirit animals reflect your magic and they are an extension of your power. As amulets, they increase your magical abilities and in their fullest form, they aid in combat or magical endeavours.”
“That makes sense. Still, would you be willing to not reach all your power? I mean… having a blue dragon sounds great in theory but you’d need to find someone with a baby blue dragon to meet yours. And from what I gathered, the last person to have a blue dragon was twenty-five years ago.”
“That’s not a baby anymore,” you sighed and looked at your egg illuminated by a lamp on your desk. You gestured to it, your heart picking up pace. “The shell is changing. The patterns are starting to set. That means it should be hatching soon.”
“Mine is the same. I haven’t been able to gather which species it might be. I thought it was a reptile, then a bird, but I still don’t recognize the pattern.”
“Want me to take a look?” You asked looking at him. Yunho nodded and you closed the book in your hands, standing up from your bed. He did the same and you followed him to his room across from yours.
Even though this wasn’t your first time here, you always found yourself fascinated by his room. Yunho kept everything in order and he had made this place his own. Small posters hung on the walls, bookshelves were covered in research books and then there were a couple of pictures spread throughout his desk and bedside table. They were all of him and his family, and he was always smiling.
“See? There are spirals here on this side,” he pointed to his egg, “but then on this side, it’s small little circles.”
You sighed and walked closer to his egg, studying the patterns on the shell carefully. Yunho kept his gaze on you expectantly, mostly focused on you looking at his egg than on the egg itself.
“Do you mind if I hold it?” You asked him and his eyes widened. “I’ll be careful. I just want to… see it from different angles.”
“I’d prefer if you wouldn’t,” he admitted and you nodded. He cleared his throat. “It’s not that I don’t trust you but I can’t deny that I am slightly terrified at the thought of you holding it.”
“It’s fine,” you sighed and turned to look at him. “It might be a reptile. The colour suggests it has something to do with water, maybe humid environments? I can’t tell you much more besides that.”
He growled in disappointment and collapsed on his bed, laying down and staring at the ceiling. You sat at the end of his bed, carefully grabbing one of the picture frames from his desk, looking at it. It was a photo of Yunho with his parents, the small egg in a basket in front of him. He wore his family emblem above his heart.
“How close are you to your parents?” You asked, looking back at him. He slowly turned his head to you, studying your face.
“I don’t know, I never thought about it. I mean, they always come to visit me when they have a chance and can afford it, but most of the time I’m the one who visits them. They love to celebrate my achievements, though.”
“I’m sure they do.” Your eyes went back to the picture frame, your heart sinking in your chest. You felt Yunho sit on his bed and move closer to you, his leg brushing against yours as he cleared his throat.
“Do you see your parents often?”
“Not really.” You put the frame back in its place. “I haven’t seen my father in almost ten years and my mother always has too many battles to prepare. And my older sister is always flirting with the future empress, so there’s not much time left for me.”
Without expecting an answer, you quickly stood up from his bed and started to walk out of his bedroom. You stopped at the door to look back at him, forcing out a smile.
“People tell me that I have it easy, that my family is well respected, that my future will be good, even if I am not good enough. I always tried to prove myself, to show that I am more than my family. That’s why I don’t like to wear my family emblem. Goodnight, Yunho.”
You gulped and exited his room, walking into your own and closing the door behind you. After closing your blinds, you sat at your desk for a little bit, staring at your egg for a while before going to sleep.
“Know that I’ll like you no matter what species you are,” you whispered at it, caressing its oval shape kindly. “And I will give you the cutest nest for you to sleep in. After you are born, I’ll do my research to give you the greatest home possible. You will be cherished. You will be extremely loved too.”
You stood up from your chair and planted a soft kiss on it, turning off the lamplight and making your way to your bed, falling asleep right after.
The alarm clock rang and you shut it off without opening your eyes for a while. Outside, the school morning routine had started with gardeners doing their rounds and students getting ready to spend the weekend at home. You’d remain at school, cataloguing the new books that had arrived at the library. Whether Yunho would be with you to help with the task, you didn’t know.
“Y/N?” He knocked on the outside of your door and you covered your ears with your pillow.
“Let me sleep some more!” You groaned, keeping your eyes closed.
“You might want to… wake up. I… I want to show you something.”
“Can’t it wait a bit longer?” You felt something sticky greet your nose and you removed the pillow from your head slowly, your eyes opening slightly to what was in front of you.
“Oh, my crickets!” You screamed and stepped out of your bed, leaning against the wall as fast as you could. Your eyes jumped to the hatched egg and the goop around it to the small animal in your bed, looking at you expectantly. It jumped softly in the mattress, its blue wings opening midair, an adorable little sound leaving its body.
“Is everything alright?” Yunho asked and you nodded, even though he couldn’t see you. Slowly, you walked back to your bed and extended a hand to the creature and the small dragon smelled it, licking your fingers softly before jumping to your palm, sitting on it.
“It’s a dragon.” You laughed excitedly and walked to the door carefully, opening your bedroom door to find Yunho waiting for you on the other side, wary. “My egg hatched! Yunho, my egg it… it hatched!”
You gestured with your head to the small dragon that curiously studied Yunho with its big black eyes.
“It’s a blue dragon,” he said, smiling brightly at your spirit animal. “It’s a blue dragon!”
“It’s a blue dragon!” You confirmed, overjoyed.
The small dragon left your hand and flew to your shoulder, your hands always below it to catch it if it fell midflight. It was still a baby dragon, so it wasn’t used to flying yet.
“I’m going to call it Azur,” you caressed it softly in your shoulder and Azur snuggled closer to you, making you giggle when it sneezed. “Isn’t it the cutest?”
When you looked back at Yunho, he was glancing at you fondly, a soft smile on his lips. You suddenly felt self-conscious about greeting him like this, you probably looked like a mess. He didn’t seem to mind though.
“My egg hatched as well,” he said, smiling brightly. He stepped aside allowing you to look at his desk, gesturing towards it. “Meet… Vini.”
Yunho had prepared a nest with a small little pillow where Vini slept on top. From its nose, little clouds of smoke appeared and that made your smile widen. The closer you walked to it, the more your heart was jumping from your chest.
Vini was also a small dragon, its blue scales reflecting the light coming from the window. It looked remarkably like Azur.
“It’s a…” the words escaped your lips. You glanced at everyone in the room with your eyes wide open, shocked at the sight. Yunho nodded and you looked at him, your smile fading slightly. “It’s not a red dragon.”
“I know.” He crossed his arms and looked at his spirit animal who slept soundly.
“And it doesn’t fly that well,” you informed him, and he looked at you.
“I know.”
“And I also have a… blue dragon.” Your cheeks grew warmer and you glanced at Azur, whose tail moved softly next to your ear. You gulped. “That’s means we’re…”
“I know,” he said and you saw the happiest smile on his Yunho’s face. “We’re… soulmates, Y/N.”
“Yes.” It escaped your lips like a whisper as you looked at him.
This was… overwhelming to say the least. First, your egg hatched, and it was a blue dragon. Now you found out that Yunho’s spirit animal was also a blue dragon which meant you were soulmates? You couldn’t be mad at any of it. Part of you was happy that he was your soulmate. You were extremely happy if you were completely honest with yourself.
“I’m happy,” he bit his lower lip while looking at you. “I can’t say I’m upset about it. I was… worried I would be the one to get a blue dragon and not you.”
“That would’ve been tragic,” you said and he nodded, taking a few steps closer to you. This was your first time seeing Yunho in his morning glory, but you didn’t mind it. Something was comforting about it.
“You would’ve been pissed at me. And I would’ve been really sad because you’d probably never want to see me again.”
“Why would you be sad?” You asked and Yunho softly patted Azur’s head, ignoring your eyes on him.
“Because during these past few weeks I grew to have a new appreciation for you. And I like that we get to spend time together, you know? That is nice. You’re nice.”
Your smile widened and you nodded, unable to hide how flustered Yunho’s comment made you feel. You couldn’t help but agree with him, these past few weeks had been great, and you truly felt that you had a good friend in him. One of the best kind of friends, truthfully speaking.
“Am I just nice?” You asked, looking at him. He shook his head and scratched the back of his head. “I’d like to know what you’re thinking about right now.”
“There’s a spell for that, Y/N. Why don’t you use it?” He was also flustered.
“I might use it at breakfast.” He let out a nervous laugh and you glanced at Vini and then at Azur who snuggled close to your cheek. “We should inform our professors.”
Yunho nodded and you turned around, exiting his room. You bit your lower lip and turned to look at him, his cheeks the brightest shade of red ever.
“I think he likes me,” you whispered to Azur looking at its big black eyes. “Do you think I should ask him?”
Azur blinked slowly, getting comfortable on your shoulder to take a nap. You patted it slightly, feeling the soft fur of its head a contrast to the scales on its body. What a cute little companion you would have for the rest of your life. Your eyes found Yunho’s figure and you leaned on your door frame, looking at him.
I like you too, Yunho, you thought and watched as he stopped what he was doing and turned around to look at you, eyes wide open. You shrugged and smiled at him before returning to your room, closing the door behind you, grabbing Azur softly and placing it on your desk for the time being.
“I wasn’t reading your mind.” He informed you from the corridor and you returned to the door and opened it slightly, finding a concerned Yunho on the other side. You raised an eyebrow and he gulped. “Ok, maybe I was reading your mind. I’m sorry.”
“I’m not.” You shrugged. “At least now I have confirmation that this isn’t your first time inside of my head. And I’m sure it won’t be last either.”
You started to close the door of your room and he stopped you, looking at you concerned.
“I am sorry, Y/N. I just… I always like to know what you’re thinking and you rarely speak your mind. I just… I know this is a huge violation of your privacy but… this is maybe my fourth time doing it?”
“What were the previous times for?” You crossed your arms and his eyes widened.
“I just… I wanted to know if maybe…” He licked his lips and took a deep breath, avoiding your gaze. “I wanted to know if you were interested in other… people. That’s why I did it. I won’t do it again.”
“Now you know I like you, so I don’t think you’ll need to do it again. Unless you want to know… other things.” You winked at him and watched as he grew even more flustered. You closed the door, a bright smile on your face.
Today was off to a great start.
After your breakfast, you and Yunho went with your spirit animals to meet your professors. It was a small moment, but somehow it terrified you. They took both of your dragons away to check them, made a bunch of questions to both of you and finally, they returned the little creatures to you.
Azur and Vini were already having the time of their lives together, flying around the room next to each other, making spirals in the air, communicating with each other excitedly. You and Yunho watched them, knowing that their bond only mirrored the one you both shared.
“Now that your eggs have hatched, you will have a period of adjustment with your spirit animals. I recommend you read about their species, what is best for them, how you can take the best advantage of each other’s power. You should know that moving forward, you must always work together. Is that clear?”
“Yes,” you nodded. “We know we’re soulmates.”
“That saves me time, then. Do you fully understand what it means, magic wise?”
You exchanged a look and you shook your head.
“Maybe you should refresh our memory? Our research has been limited.”
“You have access to each other’s power now, you are no longer limited to yourself or your spirit animal. And there are other things but I’ll leave those for you discover.”
“We can locate each other, right? And… possibly develop mindreading abilities?” You asked and Yunho looked at you surprised.
“Yes,” your teacher confirmed. “But there’s more.”
As you were about to ask her to explain, she turned her back on you and walked away from the room, leaving you and Yunho alone. He took a deep breath and called Vini, who quickly came to rest on his shoulder. Azur, seeing their friend leave them, came to rest on your shoulder as well, quickly snuggling against your cheek to say hi to you.
“Do you want to develop mindreading abilities?” Yunho asked as you left the room, walking to the library where you’d be spending the rest of your day researching about blue dragons. “And what do you mean about locating each other? Did you research this topic on your own?”
“More or less,” you admitted. “I know we can send each other visual images of our locations and read minds if we choose to develop those powers. We might keep our bond to a minimum and just learn how to master each other’s abilities.”
“You already mastered them all,” he said, looking down at his feet. “I am the one that has to learn.”
“And I will help you. I will quite literally never leave your side from now on. We’ve got these little buddies to take care of.”
“But would you leave, if you could?” Yunho asked, worry in his eyes. You stopped walking and you felt his hand brushing against yours, his eyes glancing at them. “It’s just… I feel like we’re focusing too much on the dragons, but what about us? Will we only do things that revolve around them?”
“This is all pretty new to us, Yunho,” you reassured him. “And honestly, I never considered leaving your side, that was never an option to me. And it’s not because of the dragons. It’s because of you.”
You grabbed his hand at the two of you continued to walk side by side to the library. Yunho’s hand moved under yours and he intertwined your fingers, clearing his throat right afterwards, looking proudly at the path in front of you.
When you reached the library, both of you quickly got to work. For a while, each of you did your research, writing down important information, scribbling down anything that might be useful later.
None of you noticed the time passing so when the sun started to go down, you and Yunho left the library with your notes and after dinner and changing to more comfortable clothes, you met in your room.
When he entered, he brought Vini’s blanket and placed it on your desk, his dragon quickly going to their spot. Azur followed suit, laying down next to his friend. The two of you watched as they snuggled close together, their big eyes closing as they started their long sleep for the night.
“We should whisper,” Yunho said, sitting on the end of your bed. “Dragons are very light sleepers, any sudden sound and they wake up.”
You nodded and carefully took your notebook from your bag and opened it so that you and Yunho could look at it.
“They mostly eat vegetables. They are allergic to all types of nuts and enjoy honey. They think it’s liquid gold. They also…” Your words trailed off when you felt Yunho move closer to you, his arm brushing against yours. You cleared your throat and continued. “They also enjoy some types of insects, but they might be intolerant to them. And Blue Dragons love seaweed. It has a high nutritional value to them.”
“I found out they sleep for long periods of time and have a very slow metabolism. I already told you they are light sleepers and enjoy sleeping under warm lights or in the comfort of a fireplace. What else…” His finger traced his notes, and you moved your head closer to him so you could read them. “During their first year, they will remain in their small size. They also only grow bigger if we stimulate them to. They have to drink a special potion for that, I think.”
“So they might remain small forever?” You glanced at the two dragons sleeping, their tails moving in the air behind them softly. “I want them to grow, though.”
“They will certainly look extremely cute for this next year. Look at their noses.”
You smiled and nodded, a soft laugh escaping your lips. Both dragons opened their eyes worried, finding you and Yunho quickly, only to go back to sleep right after making sure you were both ok.
“I…hm… Can I sleep here tonight?” You turned to face Yunho, his cheeks burning red. “I want to keep an eye on Vini, you know? They look so happy sleeping together, I don’t want to ruin that.”
“I don’t mind,” you shrugged. “Choose which side you’d like, I’ll keep the other.”
“Thanks.”
Yunho went to his bedroom to store some things and while you waited for him, you did the same. When he returned, he sat his pillow down and laid on the bed and you did the same, turning to look at him.
“I think I have terrible sleeping habits,” he warned. “Should we put a pillow fort in the middle? Maybe that’s best, no? It’s just…”
You placed a finger on his lips, smiling at him.
“Relax. Take a deep breath, ok?” You reassured him and he nodded, doing as you said. “Now, we’re going to sleep. And if you have terrible sleeping habits, I’ll just kick you out of my bed. How about that?”
“You wouldn’t kick me, would you?” Yunho raised an eyebrow and you moved closer to him.
“I don’t want to. But if I have to, then I’ll sure do it. I like to sleep.”
“You do have a terrible morning humour,” he said and your rolled your eyes. “But I’ll get used to it, eventually.”
You nodded and closed your eyes, trying to fall asleep. After a while, you opened your eyes slightly to find Yunho staring at you. You chuckled.
“Are you going to be staring at me the whole night?”
Your answer came unexpectedly. Yunho pressed his lips softly against your forehead, his hand resting on your cheek softly. Your eyes followed him as he moved away from you, turning off the lights from his side of the bed.
“Goodnight,” he said, turning to stare at the ceiling.
You stood there with your lips parted, looking at him in the darkness, slightly shocked. Your heart was about to jump from your chest and your cheeks were burning. You were thankful Yunho couldn’t see any of it.
“Don’t you dare read my mind right now,” you warned and he hummed in agreement.
Still, you couldn’t deny the shy smile that was showing up on your lips. Your hand slowly slid towards Yunho and bumped into his, stopping all of your movements. He chuckled and you felt his hand grabbing yours slightly, squeezing it lightly.
“Goodnight,” you whispered, almost certain that he was already sleeping.
And you would try to get some sleep as well, but part of you wasn’t certain if that would be possible tonight.
“Y/N?” Yunho called your name softly and you felt him move closer to you. “At the graduation ceremony, you didn’t tell me how you would do your… demonstration.”
“Why are you asking me that now?” You turned to face him, but it was too dark for you to see anything.
“Just because. Can you still do that trick with light? You know, the one that impressed everyone.”
You nodded and snuggled closer to him. He laughed, slightly surprised and you moved your fist to be in the middle of the two of you. Slowly, you focused on it and watched as the interior of your palm started to shine, light greeting both of your faces.
“Do you think they’ll wake up if I open my hand?” You asked him and he gulped, noticing how close you were to him.
“I don’t think so.”
Slowly, you opened your hand, exposing a small sphere of light in your palm. Yunho’s lips parted in delight and small speckles of light left the main sphere, dancing around your room like small stars that shined in a dark sky.
After a deep breath, you blew the sphere out of your hand and it started to move away from you, the small speckles of light rotating in front of you. You turned to Yunho, smiling at him.
“Now you have to poke it. That’s when the magic happens.”
He nodded and slowly lifted his hand, poking the main light sphere carefully. He watched in awe as the sphere burst with light, exploding in small stars all walking to make a shape in front of you two. You leaned your head closer to him, resting it on his shoulder as the show in front of you continued.
“Show me a dragon,” he whispered and all the small speckles of light walked to form the image of a dragon and his smile widened when he looked at you. “Your turn.”
“Show me…” you pondered for a while and said, “my soulmate.”
“It doesn’t work that…”
Slowly, the speckles of light started to move, not to make a shape in front of you, but to greet Yunho. He sat on the bed as the light speckles started to meet his skin, making him shine. You sat as well, your hand caressing his cheek, feeling the warmth from the light under your palm.
“Show me my soulmate.” Your eyes looked at Yunho’s and the speckles of light moved once again, greeting your skin softly, tingling slightly under a warm veil of comfort. “It’s you.”
You rolled your eyes and he laughed. You turned your palm to face the ceiling and blew some air to it, the light slowly returning to its original sphere. You moved it so it could illuminate both you and Yunho, the small source of light casting shadows in both of your faces.
“How was it?” You asked him, looking into his eyes. “I have forgotten most of my other tricks by now…”
“It doesn’t matter.” Yunho moved his head closer to yours and placed his hand on top of yours, diminishing the light significantly.“This one was always my favourite.”
“Why?” You moved your head closer to his and brushed your lips slightly against his, unsure if you should close the space between the two of you. “What made it so special?”
“You made it special.”
The light in your hand flickered and Yunho cupped your face softly, finally kissing your lips gently, making sure that nothing was left unexplored. You smiled into the kiss, pulling him closer, feeling his body pressing softly against yours as you laid down in your bed. When you parted ways, you could feel your entire body on fire.
“Let’s try to sleep now.”
Yunho nodded in disappointment, planting a small last kiss on your lips. Even in the dark, you could tell how flustered the two of you were from this moment. Slowly, you snuggled close to each other and you felt the comfort, warmth and safety Yunho’s presence brought you tonight. Whether sleeping together would become a normal occurrence you didn’t know, but so far you were liking it.
The two of you may have not started on the greatest note, but you were glad that now things were much better. Part of you was delighted he was your soulmate and right now, you couldn’t wait for whatever the future had in store for the two of you.
One thing was certain: you wouldn’t leave each other’s side ever again. And you’d live a wonderful, long, successful and adventurous life together. There were a lot of answers you didn’t have yet, but that didn’t matter right now. Right now, it felt good to not know all the answers.
