Donnie nodded as he shook the woman’s hand, avoiding eye contact. He wasn’t sure why his parents made him switch doctors, and he was wary about connecting to this new one. How much could he really tell her? He wasn’t sure yet. He trusted his last therapist enough to not lock him up when he told her about the hallucinations, but who knows what this one would think? He took a seat anyway and finally glanced at her, choosing not to voice his concerns. “Hi.”
Breaking the ice with new patients is always difficult. It was her least favourite thing in the beginning of her career and remains, if she’s being honest, a little frustrating, but she’s ultimately come to terms with understanding that people are going to say what they want to say. Ultimately it’s not her problem if they sit here in silence for an hour. “Why don’t you tell me what’s been going on with you lately.”
