i am so grateful to be alive. i am in love with this moment and this time in my life. my parents are alive and well. i cherish their support so very much. all of the people i love and have loved the most are alive. i am young and healthy. i have the privilege and comfort of being pretty sure that i will be on this earth for some more time. i can walk and bend and jump without pain. i have all of my cognitive faculties intact. i can think and feel and make decisions for myself. i have lots to be excited about. nothing is ending for me. i don’t have to say any goodbyes right now. i am not consumed or debilitated by mental illness. my mind is allowing me to feel some joy and get out of my bed. i wish i could give a hug to every one of these things. i get to exist. thank you, science and circumstance, for allowing me to experience this brilliance.
been feeling the retro vibes lately...
did i just have a dance party in the shower to sir elton? yes. could i have fallen? also yes. but what was i supposed to do? wait until i was out of the shower? no. that’s called living on the edge baby
rocketman: an epilogue
2. “i’m still standing”
the finale, again for good reason. this is elton’s first song sober. the movie version begins slowly, almost ballad-like. you can feel his resilience in his tongue and his throat and his very being. god, it’s the most wonderful thing in the world. yes, the sun sets, casting the darkest shadow imaginable as the last strokes of light sink to the bottom of the sky and inevitably drown. but goddamn, the sun. also. rises. i, too, have pulled that same sun up from the horizon and sweat rivers while i breathlessly held it there in the sky. and it’s there. it’s fucking shining now. elton’s story is fiercely human and empowering. it clutches my heart and draws tears out of my eyes as i drink in the resilience of him and all others who are still standing, too. we’re still standing.
rocketman: an epilogue
it’s impossibly difficult to name my favorite scenes from the film. my most earnest attempts steer me towards the following two.
1. “rocketman”
the titular song, for good reason. it comes squarely in the middle of elton’s first rock bottom as he quite literally sinks to the bottom of his pool, willing himself to succumb to the cold water. instead of the black abyss he probably expected mid-air, he sees a younger version of himself doused in slices of sunlight. he’s sitting at a piano with a bubble around his head, half-scuba and half-astronaut. it dares to suggest that while his innocence and joy have been drowned by trauma and fame and substances, they are safe deep in his subconscious mind. unalterable. “I miss the earth so much,” elton utters, now belly-up to the ever-distant sky. “i miss my life”. at this moment, he is rescued, slapped onto a gurney, and hoisted into the air by the silhouetted arms of doctors. and then his face changes. he’s in his iconic dodgers uniform, sequined enough to reflect the very sun he just nearly surrendered to. one of his most famous performances of all time came days after he attempted suicide. in a small way, in my small world, i can relate. my first lead role was danced on a whimpering stomach. i signed autographs for wide-eyed little girls with wrists that had to be caked with makeup. the stage is a curious place. it’s a different reality entirely, especially when you’re desperate to escape the one you’re living in otherwise. if you stretch your lips wide enough and crinkle your eyes tight enough, it’s hard to tell whether you’re laughing or crying.
