The fact that Owen is all but explicitly stated to have children in ISTTVG is a genuinely fucked up part of it that doesnât really get brought up in the main points of discussion i see surrounding the movie. Like his line âI even got a family of my own, I love them more than anythingâ is what made me and my roommate genuinely go âoh noâ out loud.
Because, even though the movie doesnât linger on it, is that not representative of how deep Isabel is in this hole? Is that not such a devastating turning point in Owenâs story?
We keep watching the movie, wanting him to run, to escape, to get out. To do what Maddy was able to do and break out of the Midnight Realm. Itâs not where heâs supposed to be, itâs not right, itâs not real. But having kids makes it so, so much harder for him to make that leap, and thatâs obviously a reflection on real parenthood. In parenthood you sacrifice yourself and your life for your children; even though the audience knows the Midnight Realm isnât real, and though Owen can feel it tapping in the back of his mind, he CANNOT run away from his children and bury himself alive the way he could have as a teenager, or when Maddy came back to tell him to. We know itâs right and we know itâs what he needs but he CANNOT DO IT for this reason. More than just his fears and repression. He loves his kids and heâs likely devoted his life to caring for them, and in doing so has trapped Isabel in that grave for far longer than she can stand.
