I want protective light. Could you please do light yagami reaction to it's late at night and reader hasn't come home. Later he finds out she is sick and takes care for her.
LATE NIGHT (light yagami)
you’re running late with a dead cellphone and a bad headache. light yagami’s waiting for you.
+ pairing: light yagami x reader
+ warnings: canon verse, attempt at fluff
+ word count: 2k
author’s note: this have been in my drafts for a while, sorry for taking so long. i’m not really good with fluff, so feedback is very appreciated :)
12.28 AM.
the numbers are displaying in red on the small digital clock that’s resting on his desk. light yagami doesn’t pay attention to it or at least he tries not to let it distract him from the task at hand. the only sound in the otherwise silent room is produced by the scraping of his mechanical pencil against the pages of his notebook and the occasional, infuriating chuckle the god of death emits. it’s not funny at this point.
“ do you want something, ryuk? “ light asks, calmly as his pencil writes yet another unfortunate name.
hyuk. hyuk. hyuk.
“ i couldn’t help but notice that you’ve been staring at that clock. “ says ryuk, like he’s exposing some big secret of his. “ are you waiting for someone? “
and it’s not like you to be up so late, he wants to add, but doesn’t for now. light sighs and continues without stopping his activity.
“ that shouldn’t be any of your business, now should it ryuk? “ he replies, sassiness laced in it.
the god of death scoffs. “ nah. of course not. i was just curious as your roommate. “
light doesn’t likes this. the comment’s left ignored as he continues to write the names of criminals with predetermined times. as an insurance, he’d explain, when ryuk had asked him about it. the cause of death remains the same however, a heart attack for all the major criminals. for minor crimes, he’d let them rot with slowly spreading diseases or accidental deaths.
yet despite how perfect everything seemed to be, his attention keeps breaking back and forth. he’d stare at that clock — five minutes has passed, and wonder if he should give you a call at least. he’s subconsciously tapping the pencil agains the paper, thinking and thinking. and at last, he comes to the conclusion that he probably should. there’s nothing out of ordinary about it.
“ is this about (y/n)? “ ryuk teases, perhaps having a little too fun with light’s discomfort.
light glares at him.
ryuk blinks. damn he’s scary.
“ uh, alright. i won’t mess with ya. “
with a few taps, light accesses your contact on his phone and presses the dial button. it does rings a few time, but soon the message runs; the number you’re trying to reach is not available. light frowns. he wouldn’t have put it passed you to have your ringer off, in fact you probably have, but not being able to reach you is another thing entirely.
well, your phone could be off because you ran out of battery, it’s a reasonable explanation. but light can’t feel at ease with that.
he stares at his phone for a bit, before dialing once again. the same response. and again. your phone’s definitely off. glancing at the clock again; 12:39 , light gets up from the chair.
“ huh. you goin’ somewhere, light?” ryuk asks.
as light slips on his white jacket, he hums at the shinigami. he doesn’t entertains him with a response as he steps out of your shared apartment. his stance is rather composed, hands tucked in his pockets lazily as he walks. he sure looks calm for someone so worried, ryuk thinks. he’s never seen light stay up so late before after all. he’d at least go to bed even if he probably won’t sleep. being attached to him 24/7 ryu knows him quite a lot.
the streets are dark, save for the amber street lamps at a little distance. it’s definitely cold, the perfect timing to make an annoyed person completely mad. light repeatedly sends a glance at his phone, wondering if you’d have seen the few messages he’d left for you or call him back as he enters the parking. he knows he’s started to get.. rather worried, but it isn’t something he should be reacting so strongly for.
ryuk, on the other hand, is definitely finding his own entertainment in this. he’s never seen light like this for another person.
“ we’re ya gonna look? she could be anywhere — “
“ will you shut up for a second? “ light cuts him off, sending him annoyed look.
he gets into the driver’s seat of his car.
the wind rushes past your face, making you squint in annoyance. your fingers has begun to feel slightly numb. your head’s hurting too bad. maybe you shouldn’t have stayed so late to set up that lab experiment for your thesis that you ended up missing the last train. taking the bus took a while longer and a few kilometers of walk after that.
huh, no. maybe you shouldn’t have been a baby and taken your car instead. as annoying as it is to drive, you can’t argue that it would’ve taken you fairly less time to get home.
and damn, you’ve got a bad headache as well.
“ — her university’s too far from here, isn’t it? “ ryuk speaks again after a moment of silence.
light isn’t liking it. he sighs.
you were still a few blocks away from your apartment complex when you spot a familiar car, seemingly that of your boyfriend. he’s probably seen you too cause the next instant, he’s stopping by the curve. the door shuts behind him as he steps out.
“ light? “ you speak, surprised.
he never stayed up so late.
“ i’ve been calling you for the past hour. what’s up with your phone? “ light asks, clearly agitated with a frown tracing his brows.
the fact that you’re fine makes him relieved. he’s known the ugliness of his world, he knows it too well, that’s perhaps the reason why he had been so worried in the first place. but of course, he shouldn’t be reacting. it would gain him nothing.
you stare at him for a few seconds, still surprised. “ i — uh, my phone’s dead. “
it makes him calmer. you’re fine. “ hmm yeah, i did think that. “ he admits with a small nod.
“ why are you up so late? you shouldn’t have come here, really. “ you say. “ i lost track of time and missed the last train. “
noticing the slight shivers that run down your body, light begins to walk towards his car: “ i was up anyway so don’t worry about it. and let’s get inside, it’s pretty cold. “
you nod, slipping inside the passenger’s seat. almost instantly, your muscles begins to relax in the familiar warmth once the engine starts.
there’s silence for a while. it’s not uncomfortable, but not exactly comforting either. light sends a few glances at you once in a while, before speaking up.
“ are you alright? you seem exhausted. “
you look at him. “ ‘m fine. just tired. “
he’s focusing on the road ahead now.
“ hmm. i — “
“ light was worried for you. “ ryuk interrupts, chuckling. he’s the third wheel in your relationship, one which you had forgotten about for a while. he’s staring at you from the back of the car.
awkwardly, you ignore him. light ignores him too.
“ you should at least bring your car with you. it’s inconvenient with public transport at this hour. “
you hum in agreement. “ yeah, i know … “
though you know you probably won’t. light probably knows it too when he glances at you again.
“ you want me to pick you up next time. it’s — “
“ no, no. “ you interrupt him, smiling faintly. “ i usually stay out quite late, there’s no need for that. i’ll probably take my car next time. “
hyuk. hyuk. hyuk. of course, the god of death interrupts the conversation; enjoying the scene as he speaks up.
“ nah that wouldn’t bother him. he doesn’t sleep anyway until your home. “
you arch an eyebrow, a little amused with the sudden information. even though it was normal to be worried about each other in a relationship, you wouldn’t have expected light to be well, that protective of you.
“ is that so? “ the hint of teasing is clear in your voice when you peek a glance at him. “ didn’t know you were so paranoid. “
light chuckles softly. “ are you surprised? “
his smooth voice heats up your cheeks a bit. even though you had decided to leave the conversation at that, light looks to his side again.
“ well. are you? “
“ tch. no, i’m not. “
a sigh of relief escapes past your lips once your home inside your apartment. taking off your coat, you hang it inside the closet and rub your temples. it’s been aching since morning with that light fever which you assume is because of the pressure of work and your studies. you continue to the kitchen to take some paracetamol. light enters behind you to grab a glass of water for himself and notices you. you look a little more than just tired.
“ (y/n)? “ he says, watching you with a slightly scrutinizing gaze.
swallowing two pills, you look at him. “ yeah? “
he walks closer to you and places the back of his palm against your forehead. “ you’ve got a fever? “ the question slips past his lips as he opens one of the drawers to get the thermometer.
“ it’s very light. “ you explain, earning a small arch of eyebrow from him.
he hovers the thermometer in front of your forehead until the equipment makes a little ‘beep’ sound. this time, it’s several beeps in a row. he frowns, looking back at you.
“ it’s not light. “ he says, “ why would you even go outside with it? “
“ it — “
it was important, you wanna say, but he already knows that. so he cuts you off.
“ i know it probably was important, but you shouldn’t be risking your health for it. “ he sighs, “ and god. you were wandering off in that cold. it’ll only get worse like this. “
you sigh. “ well yeah, you’re right. “ how many times will you say that?
“ and don’t take medicine without eating something first. “ he continues, lecturing you at this point. “ have you had dinner? “
he knows you haven’t as he looks inside the fridge to see what you guys have. despite being a brilliant cook, as he’s with everything else, he rarely engages with it at home. neither do you, but you’re a terrible cook as well. it’s always takeout, not that you mind it. right now however, his worries makes you chuckle as you lean on the doorframe.
“ alright, mom. “
light’s movements pause to look at you. “ mom? “
your palm’s resting against your mouth, trying to stifle the laugh as you walk closer him. there’s a faint curve of his own lips at that that’s replaced the initial surprise, he’s obviously amused.
“ don’t worry so much now. i’m not a baby. “ you say, grabbing his waist from behind.
he chuckles. “ i won’t if you stop acting like one. “
you squeeze your hold. “ well now you’re just being mean. “
“ am i now? “ he teases, before turning around completely to wrap his own arms around your smaller waist. before he could continue however, you place a fleeting kiss on his cheek.
he smiles. it’s one of those rare times when he does it whole-heartedly. giving your forehead a chaste kiss, one that undoubtedly makes your heart melt each and every time he does it, he continues: “ go and get some rest. i’ll bring dinner for you. “
it’s definitely one eventful night.
