Hello! You can call me Dagne, and this my art and story creation blog. I'm going to post what I've been creating; from characters to magic to species to the world/galaxy in general.

So I'm experimenting with several things, as you can kinda see, I'm thinking about Dierdra's backstory. Specifically, I'm not sure if Dierdra wins her house back or her Aunt or uncle own it now. And I think this is my answer, Dierdra lost the court case and so packed a bag and everything she could save and burnt the house to the ground.
Anyways, the first version was me learning "light to dark, stupid" as you can kinda see with the black bleeding into the flames. Then I watched a tutorial and technically followed it? Not really but it's the attempt that counts 👍 it was really interesting for how they did trees though, so I tried them and I really like how they came out!!
I'm definitely going to do this again as I get better with watercolor/ once I get actual watercolor, but I'm pretty happy with these attempts for now.

Also this is where I remembered the grass clumps cheat. I do enjoy some mushrooms more then others, and there it some shading and shape things I'm not 100% pleased with, but I had fun and experimented with masking fluid so I'm really pleased with this
Treeeeeee I did a watercolor tree!! Trees are a lot of fun to do in general, so it's a good study for like. How watercolor acts with a subject im comfortable with. I'm not entirely pleased with the grass, and I don't enjoy how it looks after I added the darkest green in the leaves. But, I did enjoy making the leaves, so now I'm trying to have patience and let the paint dry completely before adding a new color, see how that'll change how my trees look. I think my goal is to get to the point where I'm confident enough to attempt a full scenery painting.

So I started using too much water while doing the leaves, making them spread WAY further then they're supposed to, and for a long time I wasn't happy with how my ground was coming out. On my second new tree I thought "hey why don't I try and mix myself some brown, that'll look nice!!" And as you can kinda see, I abandoned that idea after like. Two brush strokes. Then I did another piece and I had the thought of doing the cheat grass tufts? That i see people do sometimes? And I went "hey would that look nice with my trees? AND THEY DO. So I have my ground figured out, now I need to get back on track with my leaves.
I said up there that I keep using too much water in my leaves and they keep getting big? Yeah I'm also using too much color in general 😅. I'm also using too much water! You can tell b/c the green/leaves in the second and third pieces is literally falling off the page. But! I'm working on it! I'm starting to practice self restraint! That's what I did on the last one as you can see the leaves are on the page still, so I'm doing better! I'm gonna keep doing trees and flowers, but maybe on cardstock or something. Then I'll just post my favorites.

Okay, I did this because I think I saw a picture of a mushroom and went "oooh I can do that" and I went and found a couple others and made this! It was legitimately very fun, though I did struggle for a little bit. My main struggle was figuring out that graphite moved with water, specifically to just barely make everything greyer and to mostly go into my clear brush and not come out!! Yayyyyyy
At he end I also had the bright idea to do a purple circle background, which would've been nice I think, except I didn't want to sketch it out b/c of what happened earlier, and then when I started I immediately was hit with "oh no, this isn't gonna be a circle" and then I went "oh I'll just go all the way with the purple!" and then my stamina went "haha no" soo the purple became a mistake. But one I learned from! But yeah, this was fun but rough, and I'm glad I did it.
So I was messing around with my black water color and made the (now) sky fade, and I went "oh no, I have to do something with this or else I just wasted a piece of paper" never mind that I've done that to like. Eight other pages.
ANYWAYS so yeah I just did the first thing that came to mind which was a city! I need to practice/figure out how to keep the ink from bleeding everywhere, and I just realized I could've used my white out to make the windows.
BUT!! I'm actually really proud at how this came out. It was fun! Like all the antennas were fun to add, and one of the buildings got a water droplet on it and got a really cool shape. All of the buildings were fun to make, and doing the fade was a really fun way to practice keeping an eye on the consistency of my paint.

So. My mom got me these watercolor brush pens, so I've started experimenting withem, and the first thing that I've learned is that almost all my pens(like my inking and gel pens) are water based!!! Yayyyy
My sharpies are alcohol based though, so they're my go to if I need some nice lines atm. That also means I need MORE. But like. I always need more sharpies? So it's not new lol
Still, I'm having fun experimenting with them, and I started with Dierdra! Specifically, I've been seeing what I can do to lean more into her witchfolk heritage, because that seems fun thematically. So I've been playing with lighting her hair on fire, as you do, which has been fun! I'll see if I can find the other versions I've been doing and adding them to this.
I'm definitely going to need to practice skin tones before I do more with my characters though. For my first time playing with watercolor, this was fun!
Because I can only draw Eir tiny because that's just what she is, I drew three Eir's! And its also kinda become a character study? But first: Eir now has a color scheme and a completely solid design! I'll talk about it at the end, b/c how I did this I think is pretty cool, even if it was sliiiiggghhtly unintended at first.
So! Starting with the left, I really liked this at first and started disliking it more and more as I kept going for this piece (I literally almost redid it). I'm still not entirely pleased with it, and I may redo it sometime later, BUT I like how it's ended up being a reflection on how she tends to try and. Hide her flaws? Or well pose herself and her personality in a more flattering light in order to hide/cover her flaws.
Skipping the middle and heading all the way to the right, this is Eir in her element! This is what she hides of herself. Her medical expertise and enjoyment of it. (Sidenote, during this i realized that giving Eir a plague doctor's mask means I should've given her some sort of bird's wings. However, I don't wanna give her a bird motif! So I'm in the process of redesigning her mask to be more insectoid, because I want to keep with the insect wings.) Especially because she's been shunned from her home for her expertise (+ her attitude, but I'll get into that later).
Then it's just Eir. I kinda gave her a dead-eyed stare that may or may not stay. On one hand, she isn't an extremely dark character (so like Wednesday Addams), and she hasn't been in a lot of trauma, so I don't know if she's earned the dead eyed stare? However, it is EXTREMELY funny to me to give a very bubbly character a trait like this. I don't even know how to describe it but I do enjoy it. So it'll probably stay. Also! Another detail! Her dress now has concrete patterns! They're so cute! I don't know how to describe them but they are there and are there to stay!! Uhh another another detail, Eir now has a lock of hair that's getting in her face. Yeah. Anyways, yeah! That's this! Bye
I wanted to do a more dynamic pose, so here's Maki in pants! This scenario is specifically the first time Maki can go shopping for pants. With her tail, for most of hey life Maki has to go to a tailor and get pants made especially for her. But Maki likes to shop! She enjoys feeling the fabric, seeing what's to small or too big, and walking down the aisles. She can do that with skirts, dresses, shirts and anything in between, but not anything with pant legs.
Until we meet the lizard people! I don't have a special name for them yet but they're on the furry planet (the planet with werepeople and people who are just Like That that I've been calling the furries. But they're not only animals! There's gonna be birds, lizards a stated defore, bugs, and maybe even fish people/mers. There's also normal people too, so the werepeople aren't like. Just weirdos that lose their hair for however i want to do that.)
I got distracted up there but yeah Maki goes to a place with enough lizard folks with tails like hers so she realizes she can go shopping for pants and y'know. Anything fairly tight that doesn't have an open back. Also, mild aesthetic thing, I might be changing Maki's hair a little! Specifically her bangs so they're following her head more and less sticking off to the side weirdly. It might help me draw her head in different positions!
Underneath is an alternate version that I actually did first! Or. Well. I kinda did them both simultaneously?
Okay so! This technically would never happen simply because Maki's Deili mark is on her back so she'll always wear a shirt before anything else, BUT I wanted to do Maki's skin on a larger plain then her face and hands, and on something more complex then her tail (also the torso/arms are things I'm more confident in doing for some reason? I just find the shapes easier to understand. Especially against the legs. I'm going to have to do a leg study soon simply bc I'm STRUGGLING with legs atm.)
So since I've basically been rendering Maki's skin, I had to figure out how to make her pants and shirt interesting without also rendering them. Which may have been easier? Anyways, first I got one of my cool brushes and tried to add some texture, which worked with the shirt, but the pants were still looking flat. While I was trying to figure it out, my super cool cousin who's been doing art for a very long time suggested I do a minor gradient from the bottom of the pants up and it worked! You can't really even tell it's there, but it gives some nice depth to her legs/pants with barely any work! It's a miracle!!!

Maki again! This time with a different pose and her hands out! Also her boots. These are her regular boots i love drawing them actually. I don't have too much to say here to be honest. Most of these outfit sketches ended up being ways to practice doing Maki's skin while dressing her up in cool outfits.
I did learn something here though; I need to figure out how to cell shade her skin now that I can render it.
Also. Her head weird here. I didn't notice until I started this post.

Okay. So now that's outta my system. I'm really proud of this dress! The skins still a little rough and it's the same body as the last one but the dress? I basically made that pattern with a mix of a bush, layers, and literally doing it by hand. I'm so proud of how it looks. Honestly the best way to look at this would be a practice piece. Oh wait! Actually, there was something I did that was pretty new: Lace! I did two different types of lace, and it's interesting to experiment with that. It wasn't the MOST difficult thing, but it also wasn't as easy as I thought it would be!
I will point out that for Maki, her wearing almost exclusively Lolita fashion is part of her character/story. I have another piece specifically for fleshing this out so that'll come out soon. Not next post but the one after.
I've finally done Maki in complete digital. Maki's really hard to color digitally because 1) her head shape's really specific, in that her head's really short/squashed but her jaw's sharp. So I end up making her head really wide, or I get the proportions off, and no matter how I try and reshape it looks weird so I have to redo it. And this happens several times. And 2) Maki's skin is literal gold. Which means I have to shade it gold. Gold is really hard dude. It's so hard. I'm figuring it out, but you can see how rough it is here. You can see where my shading shapes are still X D and I spent so much time trying to figure it out I JUST REALIZED I DIDN'T GIVE HER SOCKS ANY DETAIL AAAAAAAAAAAAA just like how I didn't highlight her hair 🙃
Ahem. Uh. This was a good learning opportunity. I spent all of my time doing this on her skin trying to figure it out that I didn't give other parts of the piece the same love. The next piece I didn't learn this but afterwards. I put this into affect.
This piece did break down my barrier towards drawing Maki digitally, so I'm very glad for that. Like a launch pad.
Dierdra's mafia pope outfit, with and without the cover thing. If you noticed that there's more different then just the cover thing, you'd be right!! I was a dingleberry and did the coat version first! And THEN I did without version. Worst part of all, I DIDNT SAVE ALL MY LITTLE ACCESSORIES. Which means I had to redo. Everything. All the color. It was slightly miserable, but also worth it. Because look! At that shirt! It's so cool! I'm so proud at how it came out!! It's now part of Dierdra's wardrobe from now on.
I realized I shaded Dierdra's hair wrong in between these two pieces. So it's actually really good for seeing why I switched! My new technique gives the hair more depth and has the color be more uhhh random? Variable? You know how hair is. Each strand has its own shadow, and the stands move together. This should be a simple way to allude to that. My old technique is more flat in comparison, trying to show color alternating but it's too controlled, predictable.
I'm also. Really proud of this pose. Like. It makes the whole piece. Specifically because it lets me give her an open shirt and a hint of side boob without. Sexualizing it? Yeah. I'm really really proud of this pose.
Zimmerman details
I saw this outfit and went "Dierdra." So. Here's Dierdra wearing a Mafia pope outfit!! : D this was really fun to do, especially after I took a break from digital art. I had to get a brand new brush for the lace here, which was cool and fun! I need to figure out how to import brushes into sketchclub though, cause I have quite a few brushes saved and I'd like to see of I can use them!
I didn't keep 100% accurate to the reference, but I will defend myself with the second longer necklace being really hard to read in conjunction with the gold belt. And I couldn't figure out how to do really complex gold shading. I'm figuring it out though!! You'll see with Maki in a post or 5. (Unless this is old, then scroll up : D) also! I think I figured out a cooler way to do Dierdra's goggles, but I gotta do it a couple times to make sure I can remember the steps every time.
I forgot how I've been shading hair in this! I went back to my old way of coloring hair. I do like how I did all the pearls on this. Uhhhh. I think that's it. Posting an alternate version next!!
