Wanted to make revised designs now that we have design influence from the Wolf King show! I’ve just done the main 4 here because I needed them for some projects I’m working on, but I’ll probably make more as needed.
I’ll share my thought process behind my designs and each character has a beginning of series and towards the end of series design. Feel free to use any of these just make sure to tag me!
Be sure to let me know what you think!
Designs under cut:
Drew Ferran
Early series:
I love Drew’s show design and the Inuit influence his adoptive mother has! I kept his skintone, made his hair more of a night sky color instead of a dark brown, and greyed his eyes more to match his book description. For clothing, I went for more book accuracy on this as well. I scrapped his fur coat because I don’t like it. I kept his blue belt thing the show gave him because I liked that, and removed most of his other clothing since in the book he is straight up naked aside from his cloak. Speaking of cloak, I gave him the Green cloak that Hogan lends him. I also gave Drew facial and arm scars from his fight with Vanmorten as well as a large stomach scar where Mack stabbed him with the Wolfshead Blade. My design for the blade itself is pretty consistent for what we see in the show and on book covers.
Late series:
Drew is described as looking far older than he is by the end of the series, with greying hair and stubble which I incorporated here. As well as his hair being longer, so I gave him a wolfcut-ish style obviously. Now that he isn’t a 16 year old lost in the woods he gets better gear and armor as well, along with his wolf-grey cloak he has in the books. I kept his blue shirt and belt thing once again for the same reasons as before. He also has his wolf pin from the Wolf’s Council in book 2. He of course, has Moonbrand and the White Fist now, and I coordinated their colors. The orbs on Moonbrand represent the full moon of course. He has plenty more scars with a nicked ear as well as facial scars from when he was burned and lost his vision, and greyed pupils to represent that eye damage.
Wereform:
Drew’s werewolf form in WolfKing was pretty similar to my old design for him. I mostly kept the design the same as my old one with some minor marking and color adjustments.
Whitley
Early series:
I didn’t really mind the clothes they gave Whitley. They do feel like something a ranger in training would wear. The only differences I made was swap the orange and green so that she has more of that Brackenholme color. I also made the design look more like tree branches than it does in the show. I kept her staff more or less the same as well. To me more book accurate, I designed Whitley herself to look more androgynous since a big part of her character is how she passes as a boy. I kept her locs but got rid of the killmonger cut WolfKing gave her, and changed it to a different androgynous style that I felt suited her better.
Late Series:
No longer in training, Whitley gets better gear as well as her Brackenholme green cloak. I made sure to keep the bits of orange in her clothing despite this change so that she still has her ties to Hedgemore. She has her Wolf’s Council pin as well now. In the books, Whitley wears braids, so I gave her a more androgynous style of braids now as well.
Wereform:
Since we only get partial transformations for her in Wolf King, I mostly referenced Bergan’s werebear design for hers. She of course gets more beefed up and keeps the green eyes she and her father get while transforming in the show.
Hector
Early series:
I’m quite happy with hector’s design in the series, but not so happy with the clothing he wears, which is where I made the most changes. For Hector himself, the only thing I changed was to give him dark brown hair to match his book description. I kept his star-vest from the show since I love how it references him being a magician but also his interest in astronomy. Hector’s clothing in the show is pretty much all black. In the books his clothing becomes all black over time during his corruption arc, so I gave him a lighter colored shirt here as well as his Redmire brown cloak from the books. I didn’t like his weird mechanical dodecahedron tool box Wolf King gave him, so I gave him a more traditional magisters bag instead.
Late Series:
Hector gets darker clothing now. He has a tattered black cloak to replace his brown. He has his boar broach he inherited from his father after his death as well. Of course he has his necrotic hand, with the hole in the middle from an arrow piercing through. I neglected to give him neck scars from The Host, but trust me they will be there on any subsequent drawings. Hector’s hair has been cut shorter and is no longer tied up in a bun as Hector stops caring about his appearance. Hector is also more gaunt as described in the books. Finally, I gave him a blue tinge to his eyes as a reference to being overcome with necromancy as spirits have blue eyes in the books. Hector doesn’t get a Wereform since he only ever partially transforms, and I don’t need to design such a thing yet.
Gretchen
Early series:
In my opinion, Gretchen’s design was the worst adapted. The rose design on her clothes, her makeup, and her hair pieces from the show I did like, so I kept them here. I gave Gretchen Green eyes as well as freckles to be more accurate, and made her braid more prominent. Instead of her ugly jumpsuit, I gave her a red dress like she’s described as wearing in the books. Overall I wanted to make her look like the rich jerk she is in the early series.
Late series:
(Had to combine image to avoid going over image max)
Gone is the makeup and finery. Gretchen is a warrior now. Her hair is mostly loose to symbolise her becoming more wild and her rejection of noble society. She has lost the dress and replaced it for more practical clothing. In the books, the Harriers don’t have a designated color for their cloaks, so I decided to go with a green because it looked the best and could represent Gretchen’s Connection to Brackenholme (albeit it’s a different shade). I added a bandage on Gretchen’s left leg from her injury in Bray, as well as her crutch she uses after the injury. She also gets scars on her wrists and neck from Lucas in book 6.
Wereform:
The fox! The scar from the injury on her leg is visible now too, and I gave her green eyes once again. I based her facial markings on the ones she gets during her partial transformation in Wolf King.
I SWEAR I also love the other characters it's just that I'm most attached to Hector
And I know this should be more like Wereworld fanart but it's just that the shows design is so peak
And I guess it's fair I feel that way I did watch the show first and then started the books (that I'm still procrastinating)
HOWEVER
I had this idea for a while now and I guess it was time
I'm quite proud of this one so I'm gonna attach the other ones with filter
I think my favourite hand is Gretchens hand (top left corner)
My thoughts while drawing this were also:
Spoilers ahead
Wouldn't it be so cool if on one side we had Hectors friends, the representation of good (Gretchen, Drew and Whitley) and in the other hand (pun intended) we had the shadow hands, no people in particular but a representation of his descent also represented by how the hands go by darker and darker colour the more at the top they are?
With the power he gains, the people he kills, the people he starts associating with and the entities he searches
How he starts losing himself, his ideals and how he chooses to stay blind, excusing his actions, to an unpleasant truth
He's betraying Drew
"He's dead" he keeps saying and yet
He's always torn
Good and evil, new and old, wolves and lions, blue and red
I tried my best to have this drawing be torn between warmer and cooler color
Hello chat I have come with yet another Wereworld/Wolf King piece
I still gotta finish book 4 tho but as far as I am
Trent ily muak
I'm most proud of Drew, Whitley and Gretchen tho. I was trying to give Whitley her androgynous side while still keeping their features but I failed and just went with it
This was more to experiment with different brushes and I love my blorbitos so this came out
My computer was DYING while I was trying to finish it, anyways these are the brushes I used for each:
The Tower is a symbol for the ambition that is constructed on faulty premises. The destruction of the tower must happen in order to clear out the old ways and welcome something new. Its revelations can come in a flash of truth or inspiration.
Welcome to my case of "I was trying to sleep because tomorrow I have exams but suddenly I got struck by inspiration at 1am and I couldn't ignore it anymore"
So guess what, I decided to play with brushes :D and I used a LOT like I wanted it to be messy, and which better character for it than Mr. Corruption?
I started book 4 as noticed but I couldn't keep going because well haha exams and stuff and I still really gotta lock in so I'm not having time HOWEVER at 1AM I couldn't purge my uncontrollable urges so I did this:
I've been meaning to draw him, I love him dearly and I miss him 😞
But yeah, here, have some variants (´∇`'')
So that's all, the good thing is that soon enough I'll have vacations so until then 。°(°¯᷄◠¯᷅°)°。
