If you’re wondering about the origin of the #SupportLocalDrag hashtag we use, this is the queen who started it all! After working in cities along the east coast like Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and Washington D.C., and watching shows with talent packed casts get canceled due to low attendance, Brooklyn Ford took it upon herself to start a one-queen mission to raise awareness that drag is everywhere, and that there are talented performers doing their thing in communities around the world. Knowing how powerful social media can be, she began using the hashtag #SupportLocalDrag and encouraging others in the audiences and on the stages of drag shows across the country to do so as well. It quickly caught on, and is now being used by performers and fans of drag across the country.
So next time you’re out at your local drag shows snapping pics and videos with your phone, feel free to use the hashtag #SupportLocalDrag to help spread the love of all things drag and remind people that drag goes far beyond the set of a television show.
Nothing but talent!
Yaaaaassssssss!!! Gisel Lord, everybody!
Each week we’re going to be posting legendary #TBT performances that the world will never forget. It only seems fitting that we start off with one of the most iconic moments in drag herstory: the one and only Tandi Iman Dupree’s performance to “I Need A Hero.” Drag has been around for centuries, and queens have been turning it out for audiences in bars, clubs, and theaters for as long as there have been wigs and costumes for the wearing. Some queens and some performances go beyond greatness, and are just downright LEGENDARY! Tandi Iman Dupree was, and still is, one of our heroes. Rest in Peace, Tandi.
YAAASSS!!! Forever one of my favorites!!!!
Welcome to Local Royalty
There’s no doubt about it, RuPaul’s Drag Race has certainly brought drag into a public spotlight, and it’s done a lot to advance not only awareness of drag in general, but also to increase interest amongst the younger generation of up and coming queer communities and artists in pursuing their passions.
THAT being said, however, it must also be said that #RPDR is only one tiny little corner of the drag universe! It is my personal belief that the thousands of queens, kings, gender-benders, and artists going out there and slaying the stage at their local bars each and every night deserve just as much love and admiration as the stars of the Race. Drag is many, many things, and thanks to modern technology and the wonders of the internet, we all have a chance to learn more about our own #LocalRoyalty and the local royalty from cities far and wide. It’s my hope that this blog will serve simply as a starting point (or perhaps just a hub along the journey already started) on a greater exploration into all things drag.
