Plane crash which may have killed Wagner chief is seen as Russia's revenge for Prigozhin's mutiny

Numerous opponents and critics of Putin have been killed or gravely sickened in apparent assassination attempts.

MOSCOW: Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and top officers of his private Wagner military company were presumed dead in a plane crash that was widely seen as an assassination, two months after they staged a mutiny that dented Russian President Vladimir Putin’s authority.

Russia’s civil aviation agency said that Prigozhin and six top lieutenants were on a business jet that crashed Wednesday, soon after taking off from Moscow, with a crew of three. Rescuers quickly found all 10 bodies, and Russian media cited sources in Prigozhin’s Wagner company who confirmed his death.

US and other Western officials long expected Putin to go after Prigozhin, despite promising to drop charges in a deal that ended the June 23–24 mutiny. “I don’t know for a fact what happened but I’m not surprised,” US President Joe Biden said.

“There’s not much that happens in Russia that Putin’s not behind.”

Prigozhin supporters claimed on pro-Wagner messaging app channels that the plane was deliberately downed, including suggesting it could have been hit by an air defence missile or targeted by a bomb on board. These claims could not be independently verified. Numerous opponents and critics of Putin have been killed or gravely sickened in apparent assassination attempts.

Speaking to Lavian television, NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence Director Janis Sarts said that “the downing of the plane was certainly no mere coincidence.”

The crash came the same day that Russian media reported that Gen. Sergei Surovikin, a former top commander in Ukraine who was reportedly linked to Prigozhin, was dismissed from his post as commander of Russia’s air force. Surovikin hasn’t been seen in public since the mutiny, when he recorded a video address urging Prigozhin’s forces to pull back.

Police cordoned off the field where the plane crashed as investigators studied the site. Vehicles were seen driving in to take the bodies, reportedly badly charred, for a forensic exam.

At Wagner’s headquarters in St. Petersburg, lights were turned on in the shape of a large cross. Prigozhin’s supporters brought flowers to the building in an improvised memorial. While countless theories about the events swirled, most observers saw Prigozhin’s death as Putin’s punishment for the most serious challenge to the authority of his 23-year rule.

Tatiana Stanovaya, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, said on Telegram that “no matter what caused the plane crash, everyone will see it as an act of vengeance and retribution” by the Kremlin, and “the Kremlin wouldn’t really stand in the way of that.”

“From Putin’s point of view, as well as the security forces and the military — Prigozhin’s death must be a lesson to any potential followers,” Stanovaya said in a Telegram post.

In the revolt that started on June 23 and lasted less than 24 hours, Prigozhin’s mercenaries swept through the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and captured the military headquarters there without firing a shot, before driving to within about 200 kilometres (125 miles) of Moscow.

Prigozhin had called it a “march of justice” to oust the top military leaders who demanded that the mercenaries sign contracts with the Defense Ministry. They downed several military aircraft, killing more than a dozen Russian pilots.

Putin first denounced the rebellion as “treason” and a “stab in the back” and vowed to punish its perpetrators, but hours later made a deal that saw an end to the mutiny in exchange for an amnesty for Prigozhin and his mercenaries and permission for them to move to Belarus.

Details of the deal have remained murky, but Prigozhin has reportedly shuttled between Moscow, St. Petersburg, Belarus and Africa where his mercenaries have continued their activities despite the rebellion. He was quickly given back truckloads of cash, gold bars and other items that police seized on the day of the rebellion, feeding speculation that the Kremlin still needed Prigozhin despite the mutiny.

Earlier this week, the mercenary chief published his first video since the mutiny, declaring that he was speaking from an undisclosed location in Africa where Wagner is “making Russia even greater on all continents, and Africa even more free.”

Prigozhin’s overseas activities reportedly have irked Russia’s military leadership, who have sought to replace Wagner with Russian military personnel in Africa.

The Institute for the Study of War argued that Russian authorities likely moved to eliminate Prigozhin and his top associates as “the final step to eliminate Wagner as an independent organization.”

Flight tracking data reviewed by The Associated Press showed a private jet that Prigozhin had used previously took off from Moscow on Wednesday evening, and its transponder signal disappeared minutes later.

Videos shared by the pro-Wagner Telegram channel Grey Zone showed a plane dropping like a stone from a large cloud of smoke, twisting wildly as it fell, one of its wings missing. A freefall like that occurs when an aircraft sustains severe damage, and a frame-by-frame AP analysis of two videos was consistent with some sort of explosion mid-flight.

Prigozhin’s death is unlikely to have an effect on Russia’s war in Ukraine. His forces fought some of the fiercest battles over the last 18 months but pulled back from the frontline after capturing the eastern city of Bakhmut in late May.

As news of the crash was breaking, Putin projected calm, speaking at an event commemorating the WWII Battle of Kursk and hailing the heroes of Russia’s war in Ukraine. On Thursday, he addressed the BRICS summit in Johannesburg via videolink, talking about expanding cooperation between the group’s members. He didn’t mention the crash and the Kremlin made no comment about it.

Calls to enlarge the BRICS — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — had dominated the agenda at its three-day summit and exposed divisions among the bloc over the pace and criteria for admitting new members.

But the group, which makes decisions by consensus, had agreed on “the guiding principles, standards, criteria and procedures of the BRICS expansion process”, said Ramaphosa.

Nearly two dozen countries had formally applied to join the club, which represents a quarter of the global economy and more than three billion people.

Some 50 other heads of state and government are attending the summit in Johannesburg, which concludes on Thursday.

Two killed, 6 injured as building slab collapses in Navi Mumbai

The third-floor ceiling slab of the four-storey Tulsi Bhavan building located at Shirsole in Nerul collapsed at around 8.50 pm on Wednesday.

THANE: Two persons were killed and six others injured when the slab of a 20-year-old residential building collapsed in Nerul area of Navi Mumbai, fire brigade officials said on Thursday.

The third-floor ceiling slab of the four-storey Tulsi Bhavan building located at Shirsole in Nerul collapsed at around 8.50 pm on Wednesday, they said.

The slab came crashing down on the second and first floors, killing a labourer and another person, divisional fire officer Purushottam Jadhav said.

The building has four wings and the slab collapsed in its ‘B’ wing, he said.

Some civil work was underway on the third floor when the slab collapsed, said another fire official.

The building has a tailoring shop on the ground floor and the shopkeeper closed the outlet and left the place a few minutes before the incident, he said.

One of the deceased has been identified as Babaji Shingade, Jadhav said.

The injured persons have been admitted to a local hospital, he said.

The building has been evacuated and the occupants currently lodged at the Ahilyabai Holkar Samaj Mandir hall in Nerul, the official said.

After being alerted, fire engines from Nerul and Vashi along with the disaster management team rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations and later cleared the debris.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar and other senior officials also reached the spot to supervise the rescue and relief operations.

The building was legal and had all the requisite permits, another civic official said.

The bodies have been sent to a government hospital for postmortem.

Local police have as of now registered a case of accidental death, Jadhav said.

PM Modi attributes Chandrayaan-3's success to 140 crore Indians

Moon mission is based on human-centric approach, says Modi

NEW DELHI: Visibly elated after the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the south pole of the moon on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “India is now on the moon! And this historic success belongs to 140-crore Indians and all humanity.”

Joining this moment from Johannesburg in South Africa, where he is to attend the BRICS, and addressing the ISRO scientists, PM Modi said the successful historic landing of Chandrayaan-3 has come as the dawn of new India.

“Hamne dharti par sankalp kiya aur chand per usse saakaar kiya” (We took a resolve on the earth and accomplished it on the moon), Modi said, adding that as no other country has reached the south pole of the moon before, India has become the first country to do so.

“Bravo to our scientists, as with their hard work India is now on the moon. Our successful Mission Moon is not only meant for India but for all humanity,” the PM remarked.

Elated at the success that defined India as one of the superpowers in space, the PM said, “This is a year in which the world is witnessing India’s G20 presidency. Our approach of ‘One Earth, One Family and One Future’ is resonating across the globe.”

He said India’s Moon Mission is based on a human-centric approach. “Therefore, this success belongs to all of humanity. I am confident that all countries in the world, including those from the Global South, are capable of achieving such feats. We can all aspire for the moon and beyond,” he asserted.

PM Modi said India’s successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 will change many myths related to the moon from now onwards. “The story will change. The proverbs will also change for the new generation. In India, we all call the earth as mother and the moon as ‘mama’ (maternal uncle). It was once said that ‘chanda mama’ is very far away but now children will say that ‘chanda mama’ is just a tour,” he said.

Dedicating the moment to the nation, he said this is a capability of 140 crore heartbeats of India and in the first light of ‘Amrit Kaal, the first ‘Amrit Varsha’ of success. Defining success as the eternal consciousness of a nation, the PM said the moment has given a clarion call of ‘Viksit Bharat’ as a victory call for India. “It has moved India on the ‘chandrapath’ of victory and has come for invoking the rising fortune of India,” he said.

Exuding confidence, the PM said the historic success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission will take India’s flight beyond the lunar orbits. “We will test the limits of our solar system, and work to realise the infinite possibilities of the universe for humans,” the PM said, informing the nation that ISRO will soon launch the ‘Aditya L-1’ mission for a detailed study of the Sun (Solar system).

Congratulating the scientists, he said India has again proved that the sky is not the limit. “We are witness to the new flight of new India. New history has been written,” the PM said.

Modi also dwelt upon India gearing up for its first human-crewed space flight mission in the near future. He said science and technology are the basis of the bright future of the country. “This day also signifies how victory is achieved from the lesson of defeat,” the PM said referring to the preceding Chandrayaan-2 mission which failed to make a soft landing in September 2019.

Malayali connection to the Moon mission

What began as a humble yet ambitious odyssey to the Moon under a Malayali has tasted success under another Malayali. When Vikram soft-landed on the lunar south pole, it also marked a special moment of pride for Kerala, which has made immense contributions to all of ISRO’s Moon missions, starting with Chandrayaan-1.

Soon after Vikram lander soft landed on the south pole of the Moon, making Chandrayaan-3 a success, the crowd went up in a loud cheer. Scores of people, including students, senior citizens, and some former ISRO scientists along with their family members, who had gathered at the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium in Bengaluru, were seen cheering in celebration, congratulating each other. The atmosphere was nothing less than a festival.

Beating all odds: Hyderabad to get first transgender PG doctor

Dr Ruth Paul John’s struggle during her year-long legal battle and subsequent challenges to secure a seat of her choice sheds light on the broader situation faced by the transgender community.

HYDERABAD: Securing a position in the MD Emergency Medicine programme at ESI Hospital, Dr Ruth Paul John is set to become the first transgender doctor to pursue post-graduation in the nation. Supported by Osmania General Hospital (OGH) and voluntary organisations like the Helping Hand Foundation (HHF) and SEED, Dr Ruth successfully garnered funds to enrol in the MD Emergency Medicine programme on Monday.

Despite receiving well-deserved applause, the doctor’s struggle during her year-long legal battle and subsequent challenges to secure a seat of her choice sheds light on the broader situation faced by the transgender community.

Currently serving as a medical officer in the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) wing at OGH, Dr Ruth is one of the first transgender doctors employed in a government hospital in the State. Upon learning about her, the superintendent of OGH, Dr B Nagender, extended a helping hand and launched a campaign to assist her in covering the Rs 2.5 lakh fee required for her admission. In a remarkable display of support, the staff and management of OGH managed to contribute Rs 1 lakh within a day.

“With limited time for admission, urgent funds were necessary. That is when Dr Nagender connected her with us,” said Mujtaba Hasan Askari, the founder of the HHF, a non-governmental organisation in the health sector. “Recognising that Dr Ruth is a deserving candidate, we consulted our partner, the SEED Foundation in America, and together we decided to contribute an additional Rs 1.5 lakh,” he added.

Legal battle

Speaking to TNIE, Dr Ruth Paul revealed that opting for MD Emergency Medicine at ESI Hospital emerged as her final choice during the counselling process, despite her initial preference for Obstetrics and Gynecology. Guided by her NEET PG score, she filed a writ petition in the Telangana High Court aiming to secure a transgender reservation. The National Medical Council challenged her eligibility, asserting that she had already claimed reservation under the SC category. “My fight aimed to establish a horizontal reservation for medical admissions, particularly benefiting trans men and women,” said Dr Ruth.

Although the HC issued interim orders to grant her the status of the third gender and recommended a decision that would favour her, the doctor’s eventual option was not her preferred one. “The court’s orders allowed me to select both the course and the college. However, my initial notification was for admission to Pathology, a choice I never made. Subsequently, I was offered the MD Emergency Medicine seat at ESI Hospital, which was actually my last resort,” claimed Dr Ruth. As she prepares to enter the second phase of counselling to secure the seat she desires, Dr Ruth will be poised to become the nation’s pioneer in pursuing PG in the medical field.

BENGALURU: India on Wednesday scripted history in golden letters after recording the first-ever landing at the Moon’s south pole. With this landing, exactly at 6.04 pm, India also became only the fourth country to have soft-landed on the lunar surface after the US, the erstwhile Soviet Union, and China. Chandrayaan-3’s record-setting success comes four days after Russia’s lunar mission Luna-25 crashed on August 19, just two days before its scheduled touchdown near the lunar south pole attempting to be the first to do so. That record now lies with Chandrayaan-3 of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The Chandrayaan-3’s lander Vikram began its powered descent at 5.47 pm from an altitude of 30 km. It completed all the four landing phases of rough braking, altitude hold, fine braking and terminal descent in an error-free manner, as planned and sticking to their respective deadlines. The powered descent of Vikram Lander lasted 17 minutes, filled with tension as it was during this phase that Chandrayaan-2 had lost its lander in September 2019. “Chandrayaan-3 chose a relatively flat region on the lunar surface,” Isro wrote on micro-blogging site X (formerly Twitter). It touched down between Manzinus C and Simpelius N craters near the lunar south pole.

Agony and ecstasy The entire community of ISRO scientists, including some former ISRO heads who had gathered at the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru, exulted in jubilation as Vikram landed. “Sir, we have achieved a soft landing on the Moon. India is on the Moon,” said an overwhelmed ISRO chairman S Somanath, seconds after lander Vikram touched down on the Moon while addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who virtually joined to witness the historic moment from South Africa where he is attending the BRICS Summit.

The thunderous applause echoed from inside the MOX and merged with the resounding applause at the press enclave at ISTRAC premises amid loud cheers of Bharat Mata ki Jai and Vande Mataram.  The scientists inside MOX, who had watched the tense moments of ‘terror’ of the lander’s power descent after the last command from the Earth station at 5.47 pm, broke out into a thunderous applause. It was a complete meltdown of emotions, perseverance, a lot of hard work and celebrations.

“It was a flawless mission,” said Somnath while describing the mission so far until the soft-landing was achieved. He described it as “an incremental progress” while crediting the preceding mission, Chandrayaan-2, which failed to achieve a successful soft-landing due to an anomaly in the thrusters while attempting to land on September 7, 2019, leading to its crash. Chandrayaan-3 is an improvement on Chandrayaan-2 while its objectives remain the same.

“It was not an easy task in the last four years. There was a lot of agony and learning from Chandrayaan-2, which helped us in perfecting the methodology for soft-landing. It was a flawless landing. The velocity (of the lander) was reduced to less than two metres per second (during the power descent),” he said. Somanath named and invited the scientists behind Chandrayaan-3 — project director  P Veeramuthuvel, mission operation director M Srikanth, associate project director K Kalpana, and U R Rao Satellite Centre director M Sankaran — to address the media.

Several missions from various countries, including India, Russia, Japan, and Israel have attempted landing near the lunar south pole but failed.

Why south pole The significance of the lunar south pole is that it holds promise for setting up future human bases. While the region has been screened from orbit by various orbiting missions, including Chandrayaan-2, which continues to be in a lunar orbit, none has been able to land to conduct on-site experiments and studies of the lunar environment at and around the Moon’s south pole. The region is understood to be holding abundant water ice and mineral resources that can sustain human bases in future.

Vikram will deploy its rover Pragyaan to conduct on-site studies. Somanath said Pragyaan will be deployed from the lander in the “next few hours or even a day, looking at the surface conditions. It will operate on the lunar surface for 14 Earth days and gather valuable scientific data”, which would be relayed back to the Deep Space Network centre at Byalalu near Bengaluru for analysis.

The lander’s mission is planned to be over 14 days (one lunar day), during which the lander’s three payloads and the rover’s two payloads will be active to conduct the studies of the lunar environment. Explaining the various components used in the Moon mission, he said all of them were developed in the country. He added that the lander does have some instruments provided by some countries to conduct tests on the Moon surface.

Beginning of multiple space explorations ISRO chief Somanath said Chandrayaan-3’s success means a lot to ISRO and marks the beginning of multiple space explorations starting with ‘Aditya L1’ to study the corona of the Sun early next month. Isro’s associate director Dr B H M Darukesha and his team had developed a 5-watt signal amplifier for communication — an important part of Chandrayaan-3’s lander and rover — when no other country came forward to provide it to India since amplifiers are mostly used by the military

Rover’s desi cameras The Pragyaan rover has two cameras which would be its eyes compared to foreign space agencies that use expensive cameras. The software in the rover has been developed by a Noida-based start-up, Omnipresent Robot Technologies. The images captured by the rover would generate a 3-D map of the lunar landscape. It also has a spectrometer to determine the chemical composition of the surface

Physical relationship with minor not rape if she is wife: Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court said this while upholding a trial court's judgement which declared a man not guilty of raping his 15-year-old wife.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has refused to entertain the State’s appeal against a man’s acquittal in a case of raping his 15-year-old wife, saying his physical relationship with her cannot be termed as rape.

The high court upheld a trial court’s judgement which had declared the Muslim man not guilty of raping his second wife, saying he has been rightly acquitted.

“The additional sessions judge had rightly observed that in view of the testimony of the child that she got married to the respondent (man) in the month of December 2014 and only thereafter did they have a physical relationship, no offence under Section 6 read with Section 5(1) of POCSO Act was made out and the respondent was rightly acquitted,” a bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna said.

The high court said there was no ground for grant of leave to appeal against the trial court’s verdict and dismissed an application filed by the police.

“We find that since the child victim was the wife who was almost fifteen years of age, the physical relationship of the respondent with the victim, cannot be termed as rape. The respondent has been rightly acquitted,” the bench said.

Under the exception given in Section 375 (rape) of the IPC, sexual intercourse or sexual acts by a man with his wife, the wife not being under 15 years, is not rape.

According to the prosecution, a rape case was lodged against the man in 2015 on the complaint of the girl’s mother after finding out that her minor daughter was pregnant.

The girl, in her testimony before the trial court, submitted that the man who was her brother-in-law had married her in December 2014 after which he established physical relations with her with her consent and she became pregnant.

She said the fact that she had got married to the man was not known to her mother, who lodged a complaint with the police upon discovering that she was pregnant.
