How did you come up with the name Yukari for Kazuma’s mum? It’s a really nice name, and I’m trying to come up with a name for a TGAA OC of my own, Ryūnosuke’s sister, and her name has been nothing short of disappointing. I am, admittedly, not Japanese so I’m having some trouble. (However I have trouble with names in English too, so that’s nothing new.) It’s a very nice name, and I’m big into etymology, so.
If you’re curious (you’re probably not), her name as of writing is Ryūkina, I took ‘Ryū’ from Ryūnsouke, maybe a bad decision but wtvr for rn, ‘Ki’ I took from ‘kiku’, for chrysanthemum, a flower in her design, and ‘-na’ is apparently (from Google), a name ending for women. So. I’m sort of happy with it, (it’s better than Ryūkiku, her original name, IMO) but it still feels off.
hi, thank you so much! i'm not japanese either but i do have resources i can share (though if anyone who's native or fluent wants to chime in please do so!) ^^
i mainly use japanese-names.info and jisho.org. jisho is very useful to quickly look up kanji and alternatives spelling of a word, while japanese-names serves as a directory that lets you search by kanji, by pronunciation, and by meaning (!!). it even gives you nickname examples! for reference this is the version of the kanji i chose for yukari's name.
for your own oc, i think matching names for siblings are cute (and it's frequently seen in anime so you're not off-base at all for a dgs character haha)! you mentioned chrysanthemums are central to her design. the character 菊 (kiku; chrysanthemum) can also occasionally be pronounced as "hi" so that can give you a bit more options, i'm not familiar with the grammatical rules for that so you should check out the link i added there.
it's funny you say that you prefer ryukina to ryukiku, as i think the latter has more of a punch to it due to the repeated hard consonant k! then again if your oc has a gentle personality, it might feel off and you might be drawn to a more soft sounding name. (i actually subvert this with my own oc miwa; whose name is written with the characters beauty and harmony but who grew up to very abrasive and violent lol) also, while -na is a common name ending for women, -ko is (or was until recently) also very popular- so that is another avenue you could explore! if using the "ryuu" syllable makes you feel stuck, i'd suggest searching up female names that use the same dragon character as ryunosuke and you'll get a lot more variety while still having the names match!
also on an unrelated note- please don't undermine yourself when asking for advice! i'm also very interested in etymology, and the info you gave was useful to answer your question better! i hope this helps even just a little bit!! 😁
