Am I late? ;) I got to episode 1x13 so far and only after watching that episode I got aware of the Wikipedia entry about season 1 in which it is said that Fox originally ordered 13 episodes in the first place, which explains why they practically had to restart the story with episode 14. [1/2]
[2/2] Actually the season could have ended with episode 8. It is a mystery for me that the shooter didn’t finish the job before Jack Bauer got the chance to create an incident that brought David Palmer into safety. What I now still want to know is how they managed to turn Nina Myers into a villain.
You’re not late, I’m just bad at maintaining this blog. Turns out that watching on a week-to-week basis is just really not my jam unless it’s airing live.
It’s been a while since I sat down and watched season one of 24, so I’m a little bit rusty on the details. I can tell you that the scramble to figure out the second half of the season is not unique to season one. The circumstances were, but I feel like most seasons end with me wondering “how the fuck did we get here?”
I remember an interview from years back (bearing in mind that this show premiered 16.5 years ago!!) with one of the writers... I think David Fury? And he mentioned that the closer it gets to the end of the season, the more implausible the most mundane stuff gets. Like, Jack will need to get to an airport across the city — which in earlier episodes might take a reasonable amount of time, but in episode 22 will miraculously only take five minutes. So they never quite figured that out, and eventually just embraced the chaos.
The show is so great that I refuse to spoil people who are just getting started with it, even if they’re wicked late to the game, though I feel like I can safely assume that you spoiled yourself. But to spare you the disappointment, I will tell you honestly — it is impossible to reconcile most of the season with the idea that Nina is a villain. It doesn’t make sense.
Of course, they didn’t actually know who the mole was going to be in CTU for most of the first season, so the actors were totally playing it straight. Nina’s actions and concerns early in the season were genuine as far as Sarah Clarke was concerned and she played it brilliantly. The reveal that she was the mole was kinda like... what?
