In 1982, the Laconia Planning Board passed a city ordinance that allowed “conversions of tourist accommodations into condominiums,” starting the downfall of small motels and cabins along Weirs Beach on Lake Winnipesaukee. The first motel to be converted into condos was the Flying Cloud Motel. These condo complexes would no longer be rented on a nightly or weekly basis. They can legally be occupied year-round but likely will not be used as permanent residences. The property is now called Sunset Bay condos and a portion of the original motel still stands.
