His tactic works. The corners of her mouth lift into the barest hint of a smile, amusement glimmering in her eyes. He’s persistent, at least, which she can admire, even if she doesn’t wholly agree with his methods. With their moms being friends, she’s known Daisuke and his siblings for most of her life; she knows that this is far from the last time he’ll pull one of these stunts— though it’s in her nature to be the voice of reason and try to dissuade him. It’s always futile in the end. Daisuke will do what he wants until his parents say otherwise.
With a sigh that could have very well sounded like surrender, Setsuna finally steps forward. She stretches a palm out, bends at the knees, and gives the kitten an awkward pat between the ears. Okay, she is pretty adorable. Under her fingers, Setsuna can feel the soft vibrations her purring. Her gaze softens; it’s the German Shepherd all over again. ❝If it weren’t for your mom, I think you and Yuugi-san would have an entire house full of animals.❞ The sad part is she’s not so sure that’s an exaggeration.
❝…If your mom lets you keep her, can I help?❞ Setsuna isn’t entirely sure why she feels compelled to ask. Perhaps it is some old, buried disappointment that still lingers for not getting to have her own pet. But the offer is there. ❝I mean— if she needs to get shots or whatever, I can pitch in. I have allowance money and my dad can’t necessarily say no; it’s mine to do with what I want.❞
A grin stretches wide over his face when she steps forward and PETS THE KITTEN. Amazing. It’s like the sky is falling. It’s like the grass turned purple. The world is ending and this is the first act of it all. Kidding, kidding. He knows that she’s capable of gentleness, of course he knows. They’ve practically grown up together and he knows her —— maybe not well and maybe not like the BACK OF HIS HAND ( or like one of his siblings or his mom or his dad or —— ) but he’s seen sides of her that many people aren’t necessarily privy to.
❝ Of course you can help !! ❞ his enthusiasm is suddenly boundless for all that he knows that his mom won’t let him keep her. It’s silly, to be so excited about such a trivial thing, but Setsuna WANTS TO HELP with the kitten and who is he to say no? Really, it’s his mom that’s going to be saying no, and he’s fairly certain that they’re both aware that his mom isn’t going to allow it, but sometimes it’s nice to suspend reality and exist somewhere where there’s inklings of optimistic hope. No harm in that, right?
Reality is always lurking, though. ❝ If my mom doesn’t say yes, though,” he says, voice pitching to something softer and gentler and he looks up from the kitten, his father’s warmth settling upon his face, ❝ do you want to come to the animal shelter with me? One or two times, anyways, to make sure that she’s settling in alright? ❞ He knows the employees and volunteers at the animal shelter and he knows that they’ll treat her WELL but, still.
