How Ludwig Goransson Found Ancient Greek Instruments for 'The Odyssey'

In a featurette about 'The Odyssey,' film composer Ludwig Göransson explains how he evoked the sound of ancient Greece for Christopher Nolan

When filmmaker Christopher Nolan decided to adapt The Odyssey to the big screen, he wanted the movie not only to look like ancient Greece but to sound like it too. So when he approached composer Ludwig Göransson about the score to the picture, out July 17, he challenged the Oscar winner to source authentic instruments. A new featurette, premiering here, shows how Göransson created a Homeric score with a lyre, an aulos, and instruments made of bronze since the setting was the Bronze Age. “Chris had mentioned early that he was interested in aulos,” Göransson says in the short film of an instrument that looks a bit like twin clarinets. “He was interested in lyre. The aulos was an ancient Greek instrument. It was the most popular rock star instrument for a thousand years.” “This is a replica of an aulos,” musician Callum Armstrong says. “The original dates from between the sixth century and the fifth century B.C. We don’t have any surviving reeds. So I worked with two other people, and we spent a while trying to work out and figure out how this bit worked at the top. We had to read lots of ancient source material and try and work out how they did it.” Another musician, Rosa Fragorapti, also demonstrates how to play a lyre, which they had to figure out from looking at old urns and other materials. [...] The movie marks the third time Göransson has scored a Nolan picture, following Oppenheimer (2023) and Tenet (2000). Göransson won an Oscar for Oppenheimer, and has also won Academy Awards for his work on Black Panther and Sinners. “I think Chris has a way of pulling you in when you’re watching his films,” Göransson says in the featurette. “The music is definitely a very, very unique world. And I hope people are able to be part of it and fully immerse themselves in this world.”

Hans Zimmer And Bleeding Fingers To Compose New Score For HBO Original HARRY POTTER Series 

HBO today announced that Hans Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers will compose new score for the HBO Original HARRY POTTER series. The series will debut in 2027 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max where it’s available, including recent launch markets Germany and Italy and in the UK and Ireland, where the platform is confirmed to launch in late March. Hans Zimmer, Kara Talve, and Anže Rozman quote: "The musical legacy of Harry Potter is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team on a project of this magnitude. The responsibility is something that myself, Kara Talve and Anže Rozman do not take lightly. Magic is all around us, often just beyond reach, but as in the world of Harry Potter, you simply must look for it. about the Fire and Ash soundtrack:

For Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron wanted an epic, thematic score to reflect its thrilling action, grand spectacle, unforgettable characters who forge profound connections, and, most importantly, the story that will both move and inspire audiences around the globe. He insisted Franglen take the music into uncharted territory with new themes and textures, resulting in a lush, innovative sonic landscape. In 2018, Franglen started writing the first cues for the onscreen music, and spent the last two years composing the expansive score. To deliver the 3-hour and 4-minute score you hear in the film, Franglen wrote over 1,900 pages of music.

"Because this is Avatar, we have to do this properly with research and practical solutions. Jim always insists that we can't just make things up. The Windtraders are a nomadic clan, they needed instruments that reflected their culture and the materials they would use. These needed to be real instruments that they could play on screen." "I sketched out designs for string instruments and drums to be carried on the 800 ft high ships they sail. I took them to the art department; they upgraded these and made 3D designs. Next the Props department 3D-printed real instruments from the designs. These were played on set by the performers when the scenes were being shot. Because we had 3D designs, the visual effects department could map them into the film itself using the performances. You can see the instruments in the film, and of course I used them in the score. They have a unique sound, and I wanted to capture that." says Franglen.

about the Ash Clan:

The main sound of the Ash is based on a Mongolian string instrument, the Morin Khuur, a horse-head viola. Franglen had spent time working with musicians in Inner Mongolia a decade earlier and had grown to love the sound of the frenzied texture these instruments could create. Once he saw the Ash, he knew he had to incorporate that feeling into the score.
