Materials: Plaster, clay, paint, straws, wire, old music sheets, coffee, and a piano.
Typically a piano is not seen as a piece of architecture. To me, architecture needs to have a strong structure, almost like it is stuck in place, unwavering. Pianos have many moving parts, from the keys to the strings, and even to the wheels that most pianos have to reposition them. They are objects known for movement. My piano is quite to opposite. It has been in my house ever since I've been alive and has not moved from its place. It never gets played anymore and it feels almost decorative at this point. When I was younger, I used to be very involved with the piano, taking lessons and tests, going to recitals, and even writing my own music. Now, I can't even read music let alone remember how to play the piano. Everything I learned over those years is lost like I never knew anything at all.
This piece is like a relic from my younger life. It's as if the piano and everything I learned are stuck in time and they have aged in the process. I made a negative cast of my piano at home and poured plaster in it to get the positive. I also had straws on the inside of the plaster which I later passed wire through to hang the piece to resemble disorganized piano strings. I found old tests and notes from my piano days, crumbled them up, and places them around the piece. The sculpture captures a nostalgic feeling but also a very anxious and even regretful one. Regret that I should've kept going with music or at least remembered what I learned. However, not everything is meant to be remembered forever. Maybe the talent is still in me, or maybe it is not, but for now, it is lost.
