Documentary Photobook
For my documentary photobook I decided to base mine on the mural trail that runs through Glasgow City centre, I wanted to try capture people looking at the murals and I feel I have been successfully as shown in the third image here. I am happy with the finished documentary book the colours have turned out really well and are a true representation of the onscreen images, I accidentally ordered a matt paper that i didn't feel initially worked for the book but I feel that it has grown on me and a actually like the textured feel of the paper. I learned a lot in producing this book and used these skills to produce the book for my personal project
Exhibition Evaluation
Name - Daniel Morrison Class - HND2C Date - 30/05/16 Name of exhibition - Transitions Location - Theatre Royal, Hope Street, Glasgow
How does the flyer/poster advertise the exhibition? The poster that was made for the exhibition features a photo by Sarah Coyle this image was selected by vote from a number of images that where submitted by the second year students. It has the name of the exhibition (transitions), the location and the times that the exhibition was running (there was some confusion with the times as the theatre is closed on a Sunday that resulted in people trying to go on the Sunday and being unable to as the theatre was closed, this was not clear on the final poster).
What is the suitability of the gallery space? How was the exhibition laid out? I think that the gallery space was very suitable it is in the centre of town and gets a lot of footfall alongside the people attending the theatre also. When the images are located was very suitable as they where placed in the window alcoves so there is a lot of natural light that works well in lighting the photographs, they are laid out in a circular fashion so there is a great flow to the exhibition. The exhibition is spread out over two floors with the 1st floor consisting of portrait orientated images and the 2nd floor made up of landscape orientated images. I think separating the images like this again helps the flow of the exhibition and gives it a consistent look that works well.
How has the work been mounted? Is it appropriate for the work? All of the work has been printed on a3 paper and has been positioned in the centre of the page and includes a thin black keyline these prints have then been mounted in think black frames. I think that this is appropriate for the work because of the white space and then the think black frame works well to make the image stand out. All of the frames are exactly the same, this was done to keep a clean professional look throughout the exhibition.
Who made the work? The work was made by the second year students from HND Photography as City Of Glasgow College. Each student had the opportunity to have two prints exhibited and these could have been from any project throughout the year, this resulted in a diverse range of images which I think works well for the exhibition as it give a goo representation of the work that we produced throughout the year.
Who did they make it for, who is the audience? The work was made to meet college briefs but I feel that throughout each project people have tried to make there images personal and unique to their style of photography, the images that where selected where chosen to try showcase our skills and personal style (that is what was suggested we do and this is what I did).
How does it make you feel? The exhibition has made me feel really proud and happy. I think the standard of work that has been produced is excellent and I am happy that my work is included amongst all of these other amazing images, I feel that opening night was a huge success and I was happy to be a part of it.
If the work has a title does it make you think about the image/s differently? The title of the exhibition is Transitions this title was chosen because for all of us it is now a transition some moving on to BA photography courses and other moving on into the world of work. I don't think it makes you think about the work any differently as the work was selected from throughout the year and was to showcase each persons skills and personal style.
How would you describe it to someone later? A selection of amazing images taken by the second year students at City Of Glasgow College what shows a range of subjects and techniques displayed in a really amazing space.
Does the photograph make you want to ask questions, what are these questions? I think that this year we where working on our own projects at different times so didn't really know what people where doing so it does make you ask questions because for a lot of the work you didn't know what they where doing or why so there are a lot of questions that could be asked about a lot of the images.
Is the photograph valuable? How do you know? A price of £120 was set for the images so they have an established monitory value but I think the real value of the images is the work that has been put into each project and really showcase how much we have learned and improved over the two years.
Is the work for sale and who might buy it? The work is for sale but this was not the main objective when selecting images for the exhibition but if people or a family member like a certain image they may purchase it.
What information is available about the artist/s? There was no specific information about the artist but we had the opportunity to put out business cards so people could contact. There was also contact information for John Cardberry so people could contact him for any information about an image or photographer.
Who organised the exhibition and who selected the images? The location was found by the college but as part of the course we had to take part in organising the exhibition so we had some input into the poster, the guests that when on the mailing list for the opening night, we had to set up the boards the frames would be mounted on, the frames then had to be hung we then had to be present at some point over the period of the exhibition incase people had questions about the works and then the exhibition had to be broken down after it was over.
Overall I think the exhibition was a huge success, opening night was very busy with family and friends as well as a lot of people from the photography industry as well was a number of the guest speakers when have had over the year. I think the layout was a well though out as people could walk in an orderly way and not miss any of the prints (the opening night was very busy and there where chairs in the middle of the room these could have been moved to make the area less cluttered and allowed people to move easier but this was only an issue because it was so busy during the rest of the time this was not an issue and worked well in the space) The location itself was very good and allowed for a lot of people to see the work not just on opening night which means more people have seen our work and hopefully enjoyed it. So I think it was a very successfully exhibition and I hope the college can continue to use the space in the future.
Aye Write Book Festival
During the year I was able to photograph at an event, I was able to shoot for two days at the Aye Write book festival held in the Mitchell Library. What we where required to do at this event was to photography the writers before they went to the talks they where giving. I really enjoyed photographing at this event for a number of reasons, it was a great location that held a lot of different places that the writers could be photographed in as show in the images above. The way the shots where set up as well was also really good, there where two photographers there at anyone time and we took it in turns to photograph the writers, we didn't have to go around asking people to get there photograph taken, Bob McDevitt the events organiser had a list of people that needed to be photographed and would direct them to one of the photographers either when they arrived or before they had to go to their event, we would then have about 5 mins to photograph them, this meant that sometimes you where waiting around for the next group of writes to come in but then have a number of writers to photograph one after the other.
I really enjoyed photographing this event, I have only shot at an event like this once before and I feel that I have really improved I think this is due to the skills I have learned over the past two years. For this event I used a speed-light to light all of the shots I think I have improve in this area because I have a much better understanding of how to light a subject now and was able to effectively bounce the flash to light the subjects. I also feel that by having a lot of people to photograph made me think more about posing and location as I didn't want all the shots to be in the same place or look the same. One of my images was also featured on the Aye Write twitter page.

Name of Exhibition - ‘Re: Collections’
Location of Exhibition - Street Level Photoworks
1. How does the flyer/poster advertise the exhibition?
I didn't see any flyers advertising the exhibition.
2. What is the suitability of the gallery space? How was the exhibition laid out?
I think the space is very suitable, all the prints are photographed against a black background and are placed on a white canvas in a large black frame so on the white walls of the gallery the prints really stand out. All but four of the prints are at eye level so this makes the images easy to view without missing anything.
3. How has the work been mounted? Is this appropriate for the work?
I think the way the work has been mounted is appropriate because they are thin frames that showcase the work and doesn't distract you from the work.
4. Who made the work?
It was commissioned by Bradford Museums and Galleries and was photographed by Liza Dracup.
5. Who did they make it for, who is the audience?
I think the work was made for a wide audience to try draw attention to our relationship with British wildlife.
6. How does it make you feel?
The work made me feel sad at first that all of these birds and animals had been found dead but I think it is good that they have been preserved in some way and can now be used to highlight the need of conservation.
7. If the work has a title does it make you think differently about the images.
All of the work has a plaque that tells you where the bird of animal was found dead and what date so the tile collections made me think that people are collecting these animals so their death isn't the end and they have a further purpose.
8. How would you describe it to someone later?
That they are beautiful images but there is a hint of sadness to the exhibition and it brings up questions of your own relationship to wildlife.
9. Is the photograph valuable? How do you know.
Their was a notice saying that prints are limited to 20 for each image so i believe the work has value.
10. Is the work for sale and who might buy it?
It is for sale a limited edition framed print costs £650. It might be bought by people who like wildlife photography
11. What info is available about the artist?
There is an A4 printed information sheet about the artist and the work.
12. Who organised the exhibition and who selected the work.
There was no information on who organised the work or who selected the images.

Editorial Fashion
For my editorial fashion i decided i wanted to my images along the lines of a H&M range campaign, i asked my friend Andrew to model because he has a look i felt would fit this shoot and he shops at H&M often so had a range of clothes to choose from.
I decided to shoot in Pollock park near to Pollock house, i knew there where a number of locations i could utilise without featuring the house itself. I recced the location to confirm locations to shoot i then got Andrew to photography a number of outfits and decided which ones would work best. I then found a day where the weather would be good to do the shoot and arranged for jim to assist me.
On the day of the shoot we meet at the location and the weather was perfect it was a fairly early shoot 10am so the sun wouldn't be too harsh i then proceeded to the shoot at a number of different locations i had picked out and i few that i felt would work on the day. For all of the images i used a sppedligaht shot at a reflective umbrella just to add a touch of fill light usually in the opposite side or direction of the sun, i wanted the images to look very natural as if not lighting had been added and i think i have achieved this. One of the locations that i found on the day i used the speed light and reflector with much of light being added to the image this was due to the location and the harshness of the shadows these are images _DSC0514-_DSC0528 in the contact sheets i feel i managed to get this image to work giving the lighting conditions but it needed more refinement in the shooting stage and as it was one i saw on the day i wasn't to concerned about using it.
The editing for these images was very similar for each image i first optimised them in camera raw. Then in photoshop i followed a tutorial on how to give the images a muted look. I then chose my final five images resized them and placed them on 3 A3 canvases.
I am very happy with the way these images have turned out, the shoot went as planned and i feel i created some very good images. I wasn't too sure about the fashion briefs to begin with but in the end i really enjoyed them.

Fantasy Fashion
So for my fantasy fashion i decided i wanted to base by image on the assassins creed game series as shown in my research. I decided to make it a more modern interpretation because the cost to make a whole costume would have been too much. I already had a jacket that i could you for the hooded element, so i bought materials and had a family member make the cloak and i bought an assassins creed style gauntlet from amazon. I decided i wanted to do the shot on location so taking some references from the games i decided to use a castle, Mugdock castle is where i decided to shoot after i had recced it i also decided i wanted smoke to be present in the image so i purchased some smoke grenades.
I used my brother as a model as we are of a similar build. I tried a few different shots on the day as see in the contact sheets but decided that the last image shown hear was the best. This was lit with one speedlight using a reflective umbrella placed on the left with the model looking into it. When doing my shoots i tried to get the lighting right before in introduced the smoke as i had a limited amount.
I choose this image because there is less empty space in the sky and i also felt it worked better that the other images because looking at it now i don't this the angles work. The post processing that was done to this image was that i did simple corrections in camera raw. In photoshop i used curves and the channel mixer to try give the image a more cinematic colour profile.
Overall i am very happy with the final result and it has turned out like i was hopping. Im glad i decided to try a few different areas on the day as i fell the final image that i have created is better that the one i intended on creating.
Advertising Brand
So after my first idea for my brand advertising became too complicated i decided to rethink my idea. So i began thinking of brands that i use and came up with apple. My idea was to create an image that could be used in the in the run up to a new product being launched. The idea was that apple are launching a completely new product something they have never done before so i used the apple seeds to represent this. So i looked at past apple adverts and i liked the clean white simple adverts they have done so i decided to do my advert along these lines. So i had to get a large quantity of apple seeds i then made a stencil and arranged the seed in the shape of the apple logo. I used two studio lights to light the image in a every even way and get that clean white background i was going for.
So there was some post processing do to this image starting off in camera raw doing some basic adjustments. I then worked on the image in photoshop this was to move the leaf at the top slightly closer to the apple as i felt it was a bit far away. I then used to dodge tool to make the background a more uniform white as it was off in the bottom corners. I then added the fall 2016 i tried to use a font as close to the one apple uses as possible. I then put the image on a canvas ready to print with the text removed.
I am very happy with the outcome of this image i think it really works. I feel that the seeds could have been placed better especially on the bottom right but this is a minor issue.
Advertising Metaphor
For my advertising metaphor i decided to go with a healthy eating metaphor about choosing healthier treats. I wanted the image to be fairly simple and possibly having a hand reaching in to take one of the carrot sticks. So these first three images are what i got from my first shoot, after some advice from John i thought about my idea some more and changed it slightly.
So for my final image i decided i wanted to keep the same theme using the red chip container and the red background so decided to paint a piece of wood red to give the background to texture. I then decided to to add the potato with the cutter and the healthier carrot stick coming out instead of chips. So this shot was done with the wood on the floor and i then used blueback and cocktail stick to hold up all the elements (seen in contact sheets) this had to be removed in post. I used one light placed on the right to light the image at first i want sure about the shadow in the image but i feel it works for the image. I also changed the colour of the cutter from white to yellow.
The second last image show how the advert could look like and the last image is the one sent to print with the text removed.
Advertising Brand Research
I originally had i different idea for my brand campaign but after re-reading the brief i decided that this idea might not be the best as i felt that it wasn't really in keeping with the brands previous advertising and to do so was becoming rather complex and expensive with no guarantees i would be able to make my idea work.
So i decided to have a rethink and though about brands i use a lot and this lead me to Apple as my brand.
Apple has a very strong brand identity and i think this is down to the consistency and simplicity of the advertising and also there use of the apple logo. Other than colour this logo has remained relatively unchanged since 1977 shown in the first image.
The next image it from apple adverting campaign for the iPod this is a simple looking image because it is not cluttered the man is silhouetted against an sold blue background and the white iPod and headphones are visible, the apple logo is also visible strengthening the brands awareness.
The next image is to advertise the apple store paris it is located in the carrousel du louvre a shopping mall near the louvre museum. I think this image because again it was simple in its look but also because in emulates the upside down pyramid outside the store. I also like that the point is pointing towards the apple logo again stretching the bangs identity.
The next two images are advertising tow of apples products they again follow apples pattern of simple clean images and keeping the logo in prominent locations.
The next three images are images that are produced in the run up to a new product being unveiled and a large event. Again these images are very simple and and future the apple logo.
So for my brand advertising image i and going to create an image along the lines of these event build up adverts.
Images taken for the alamy summer challenge. I used the vintage editing tutorial for these images.
Soft, colorful, vintage photo edit tutorial.
Very useful tutorial that shows how to add a vintage effect to your images. This was something i have seen lots of times by a number of different photographers i have looked at a number of tutorials on this editing technique but i wasn't very happy with the results. This was something i wanted to learn how to do so i continued to look at other tutorials and found this one and has produced results i am happy with.
