Blog week 6
1. What have I learned from the meeting we held with the adventure leader who visited our class this week? After meeting the adventure leader I learnt a lot of things about managing team. I find that the greatest assets in leading teams and project management are in competently working with people rather than in technical resources and procedures. I learnt a lot about skillfully managing human relationships and interactions. Mainly, I learnt about how to build a team and how to handle conflicts if they arise in the team. 2. What is one thing that I learned about leadership this week and how might I use this as part of my personal leadership development? One thing that I learned about leadership is Building Trust. We must gain stakeholders ' faith by communicating frankly as future leaders. Just talk of having confidence is not enough. The falling person is terrified, as he or she will be told by the catchers. The leaders whose behavior shapes his actions must gain and build trust. To the success of a leader it is crucial to be honest, genuine and open in our interaction. 3. After working with my team, what are three things that I have learned about becoming a high performing team? Three things that I have learned about becoming a high performing team are as follow: ⢠Integrity: Integrity is a highly efficient team's most significant trait. You must have confidence and confidence in your team. Everything is absolutely pointless, whether you are educated, wealthy, cool, popular or talented, without honesty. It means to do the right thing for the right reasons, even if no one watches and assumes that everybody inside the group does the same. ⢠Open Feedback: High-level teams create an open feedback environment and implement it. Regardless of their position and tenure, they frequently provide and receive comments that improve the efficiency of the group and strengthen its relationships. Leaders will lead by asking team members for input, responding positively to response, and incorporating feedback into working behaviours. ⢠Vision: High-performance teams have a good sense of direction and know where they are going. The dream is yet separate from the management, synchronizing with the overall company vision. The Vision is not something that the Team Leader alone has created or shared. It is instead a central team effort that helps everyone to feel ownership. The dream is an inspiration that motivates the team. This allows team members to set clear goals and effective targets and measures. 4. The next time I am in a team what are the top three things that I would bring to the team to help make it a high performing team? A team is more than a community of working people. A high-performance team is a group of people who share a common vision, aims, metrics and work together, challenge each other and bear responsibility for delivering excellent results. Next time I am in a team, top three things that I would bring to the team to help make it a high performing team are as follow: ⢠Participate in team building and think about the disparity between teams and traditional work groups. ⢠Develop a team charter that includes a clear statement of the intent of your organization, organizational objectives, performance targets and an ideal team vision. ⢠Learn good knowledge of meeting planning, evaluate the quality of your meetings, and create plans to improve your meetings.
Problem Solving Template
1. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of using a template to work through an operational or leadership issue? ADVANTAGES ⢠Using a template to work through an operational or leadership issue helps a lot in analysing the situation. ⢠It makes the learning of the task easy and it saves a lot of time. ⢠It clarifies the core leadership and Operational issues. ⢠It makes it easy to implement the action plan. ⢠Using a template helps us in finding a proper leadership idea which will help in resolving the issue. ⢠Using a template also makes the planning to resolve the leadership or operational issue easy. DISADVANTAGES ⢠Using a template to work through an operational or leadership issue will not provide the details of the issue that is there in the project. ⢠They just provide you with the basic knowledge of the issue. ⢠They are not easy to customize. 2. When you applied the template on the cases what did you find challenging and what did you find beneficial? After applying the templates in the cases I figured that applying templates is very challenging and very beneficial to complete the case and solve the issues that were to be solved. The main challenge was to be on-point with the details that were to be given in the template. If we are not on-point with the details in the template then it will confuse everyone of what is going on. It was very challenging to analyse the main objective of the case by using template. But it had a lot of beneficial things as well. It made easy to understand the task. Analysing the situation became easy, once we knew what we have to resolve it was easy to complete the task. It made the implementation of the solutions easy. 3. It is critical for leaders to be able to lead teams in clarifying core issues and identifying innovative ideas to resolve issues. In what ways do you think this template accomplishes this? It is critical for leaders to be able to lead teams in clarifying core issues and identifying innovative ideas to resolve issues. This template helps in analysing the situation and providing the solutions to resolve the issues. It helps in finding the core leadership issues and help them resolve it. It helps in providing innovative ideas to resolve the issues. It makes the implementation of the solution easy. It gives a proper criteria on how to resolve the issues. It tells us what is to be done, By whom and By when it is to be done. It Identifies the strengths of the leader. It helps in building a powerful solution to the issue. It basically gives us the vision on how to resolve the issues. 4. When you review the 14 Leadership topics outlined in the Problem Solving Template, which is the one that you think is a critical leadership requirement? Why? Although, all the 14 leaderships traits should be present in a leader but according to me the most important leadership requirement is Leadership Communication. Communication leadership helps in giving clarity on what to do and what to achieve. Leadership communication helps you find the vision of the task. It increases the ability deliver a message which is inspiring for the team. Good communication leads to increase the moral of the other team members. It transmits your thoughts and suggestions effectively.
Key Leadership Areas
1.Ā Which leadership area are you naturally drawn to? Why? How might you use one of your strengths to be a more effective leader in this area?
Although, all leadership areas are to be conquered to be a successful project manager, but, for me the leadership area that i am drawn to are Communication Leadership and Creative Leadership. Communication leadership shows are ability to deliver messages that inspires the team to perform well to achieve the desired project goal. Creative leadership create new ideas and innovations to complete a project.Ā
My strengths like Discipline,Creativity and honesty will help me become a good leader in these leadership ares. Discipline and honesty will help me know myself and know my audience for good communication. It will help me be direct,Ā specific and clear about all my requirements about the project. Discipline will help me be a good Listener. It will help me be positive and respectful towards my team. Creativity will help me create new ideas and innovations to complete the project. It will inspire other team members to create new ideas and innovations.
2. Which leadership area do you not really understand. What is it that you donāt understand specifically? Do some online research and find an answer to what you donāt understand.
I donāt understand the concept of change management in leadership. I donāt understand what do we need to change? and Why do we need to change?
After doing some online research i understood what is the meaning of change management and i got to know what to change and why to change.Basically, Change managementĀ refers to the tools and processes you use to manage change within a projectĀ and its projectĀ team.
High Performing Team
Ā While at high school i was assigned a project that was to be completed in a team. So i was working with a team which had high technical and communication skills. The project had a deadline of a month. The leader of the team was very efficient and hardworking. So, i was very excited and a little nervous on working with this high performing team.
1.Most high-performance team members report that working on collaborative teams is fun and satisfying because they are asked to contribute to their highest potential and learn a lot along the way.Following are the things that made my team a high performing team:
a) Everyone was working for the same goal.
b)They had solid and deep trust in each other.
c)Disagreement was viewed as a good thing and conflicts were managed.
d)Everybody understoodĀ both team and individual performance goals and knew what was expected.
e)The team leader was inspiring and their was mutual respect in between all of the team members.
f)The team made decisions when there was natural agreement.
2. So i was a new member of the team, so i was assigned the tasks that very not very tough to complete. So i made my contribution by completing all tasks on time. I communicated well with my team members. The tasks that i was supposed to do were important in order to complete the project. So i did my best to complete my tasks and contributed to the team development.
3.As i look back now, the changes that i would like to make about the team are very less as it was a high performing team. Following are the changes i would like to make:
a)Their should be some interactions that were not based on the project.
b)Workplace should have been environment friendly.
I would have loved to get a role that had more challenges in it.I love being challenged so i would have been more challenged if i had some other role in the project. I would have learned more about the project as well.
4.To be honest i am not that good at handling conflicts in a team. But i try my best to resolve a conflict. Communication is the key part to resolve a conflict. If we communicate we would know what the conflict is and we could handle the situation properly. Communication helps a lot in developing team and developing myself as by communicating we get to know about the tasks which we have to do and it creates a mutual respect in between the team.
Another approach to handling conflict would be to take help of your senior managers which have handled these type of situations and they would help us by suggesting what to do to resolve the conflict.
5.One thing that i would do differently when working in future teams is that i would communicate with the team members in personĀ because this will help me know about each team member personally and it would help me know about how they work in a team.Ā Ā
Discipline
1. So, after i completed my personal assessment i got to know about my strengths and weaknesses. It gave me a review of what and who i am. So for me my most powerful insight that resonated me isĀ āDisciplineā. This insight of me has helped me a lot in different situations. This quality of me has made me stay calm in a lot of difficult situations. I have Inherited this trait from my father though.
2. This quality is very helpful for me to achieve my leadership goals. This trait in me will help me to be more hardworking and will help me to be a good example in front of my team. Discipline makes every aspect of life more flexible and controllable. As we all know Disciple helps in creating great leaders as well.
3. Being discipline is always a great quality to have. So, i will surely adopt this quality for the remaining weeks and my further life. Being discipline will help me a lot to achieve all my goals. It will surely improve my concentration and devotion towards the project. It will also improve my learning skills.
4. After reviewing my leadership credo i got to know that Discipline will guide me to align my behaviour to what i believe in and what i stand for.
If i am discipline to achieve my goals then nobody can stop me to achieve my goals.Being discipline will help me to co-ordinate my team well.
Leadership
My Leadership Situation
While at grade 10 in my higher secondary school at Chandigarh, India, I was asked to lead a volunteer team of 6 comprising members from both higher and senior secondary including 3 members who were senior to me at School.
Initially, the senior members were not receptive to my directions and never responded on time nor in accordance with guidelines. This was becoming a major hurdle in carrying out the tasks within deadlines and, my school principal, who I was reporting to, was not happy with our progress.
I did not want my performance and my image to suffer. In order to uncover the challenges that these 3 seniors were facing, I decided to have a one on one conversation with each of them. During these meetings, I discovered that they were not happy with having to report into a junior like me. In particular, one of the seniors, Raj, was influencing the others to not follow my directions.
I organised another personal meeting with Raj and, with further questioning understood that he wanted an equal say in planning tasks. We agreed on holding a joint session with all the team members before planning out the tasks for the week and also before arranging the logistics etc. I made it a point to involve and engage the team, especially Raj, in every discussion thereby earning his respect not acting as a boss but as a mere helper in achieving the team goals.
-It was a unique experience as I had never led people older than myself and understood what a senior feels like when ordered by a junior.
-I learnt that leadership is not a title but a role. Just because I am made a leader of a group, does not mean the team is going to do what I say, but, I have to earn their respect and trust to achieve the objectives collectively.
2. My leadership strengths are developing relationship with people, am a good listener and I donāt mind taking a back seat in the interest of the bigger picture.
The above situation taught me that ultimate goal of completing volunteer tasks was more important than who decides what is to be done. Also, no matter what the difference between me and my team-race, religion, seniority level etc.- having a clear, heart to heart talk is one of the ways to uncover real people challenges and overcoming them.
3. I would like to develop following leadership skills:
a. Visionary Skills: The art of creating a vision for the team so they are motivated by something grander than just personal benefits. This would help me create strategic plans that will help both the organisation and the team in the long-run.
b. Transformational Leadership: I want to learn the art of motivating and enabling a group so they could end up achieving what might seem impossible at the beginning thereby making a difference to the lives of people beyond just organisational objectives and profits.
c. Execution skills: In the example discussed above, I realised that leadership is not one time thing but it is an ongoing initiative and execution is key to overcoming challenges as they arise. I would like to learn the meaning of execution with skills and process knowledge needed to execute with excellence.
