1. What did you think of the format of the class?

The format of this class was confusing at first, since I would know when the deadlines would be, but other than that it became straightforward, when you would tell us when the deadlines would be. Maybe for next semester, include the deadlines on your website.

2. What did you think of making & presenting your Art Gallery?

Making and presenting an Art gallery was a fun experience, where I got to interact with people from class. It made me get out of my comfort zone, and talk to people, who now I call friends. Since I am a very timid person, I tend to be quiet, where I stay my thoughts and feelings to myself, but getting into groups, I got to say what I wanted to say, without feeling ashamed.

3. What did you think of visiting the SOA Art Galleries?

Visiting the SOA Art galleries, was fun, however, I felt that it was too much going every week. I felt that many students were annoyed how they had to go every week, and do an essay on the artist. For next semester, you can still make students go, but maybe make it less, and more group activities, instead of doing essay’s every week.

4. What did you think of the weekly Art Activities?

I liked the weekly Art activities because I got to express my feelings and opinions on certain things. However, What I didn't like is how you had to do a weekly activity, with an artist conversation essay, I felt it was a bit overwhelming, but other than that i liked the weekly activities.

5. What did you think of the “7 Ideas about Art”?

I loved “7 Ideas about Art”, I felt that you did a nice job, organizing it. I liked how every week was a different idea, and your ideas behind it.

6. How did you feel about using Tumblr for your blog?

Using tumblr was revellent and useful for this class. The purpose of tumblr is to express your feelings, or reblog anything that is relatable or something you like. Tumblr was very useful, and it was very easy to use.

7. How did feel about using Wix for your virtual art gallery?

Using WIX for my art gallery, was stressful at first, but then I got used to it. I liked how WIX had many variety of options to choose from, and making presentations nice.

8. What did you think of using the class website, glenn.zucman.com/i2va, plus your own websites, instead of BeachBoard?

I like how “Glenn.zucman.com” is different than beachboard, I like how it was organized. I like how your website “glenn.zucman.com” is set up, where it has all the assignments posted and gives instructions on how to do it, on top of that, I like how you explain the assignments in class as well.

9. What did you think about having a class with no tests? I don’t just mean “was it cool to not have to take any,” but students use tests to guide their study and participation in a class. Students tend to learn what’s on the test, and to not learn anything that isn’t. Did not having exams make it harder to focus or find importance and relevance in the class?

I love how this class did not require tests. Tests in general brings so much anxiety to me, and I always overthink during tests. Tests is just a piece of paper testing your knowledge, and as you mentioned, “ Students tend to learn what’s on the test, and to not learn anything that isn’t.”Not having exams, made me more focus the purpose of art, and not memorize terms, or memorize artists that I would probably forget in a few years (maybe).

C.7 Artist conversation or Non-fiction/fictional short story.

These Art pieces can have many different interpretations. These art pieces give me the interpretation of someone from a barrio just cruising around the city while listening to Oldies, I decided to do a fictional story, because I grew up in that environment.

“One day, As I was cruising down the city, in my lowrider, I enjoyed the fresh air, and looking at fine girls, cat walking them. As I'm listening to the oldie “I wanna Know Your name” by the Intruders, this fine girl gets my attention, I immediately tell the homie to stop the car, so I can have this girl’s number, and I introduce myself. ‘Hello, let me introduce myself, my name is Mario, what's yours?’This girl was so beautiful, she had the prettiest brown eyes, with long hair reaching up to her hip, I immediately knew this was love at first sight and I usually don’t believe in love at first sight. While I approached her, she had the warmest smile, and she got shy immediately. I wanted to not only take this girl home, but I wanted to have something real with her, she was the the girl I was looking for my whole life. I asked her what her name, because I just had to. She replied ‘Sorry, I have a boyfriend...’, but that didn't stop me. Every single day, I would see her, and I would always bring her roses, and I knew I had to make her mine. One day, I saw her crying, and I knew this was my chance to comfort her, So I take her to the ice cream shop, and take her out to eat some ice cream. She tells me that she broke up with her boyfriend, because He would treat her wrong. To finish, we got closer and closer, I started taking her to dates, in my lowrider and listening to Art laboe oldies, and I finally made her my girlfriend. Eventually I proposed to her, and made her my wife. The Moral of this story, is to not give up on the girl of your dreams, because you will recognize it was worth waiting for the love of your life...”

D7. Remix Culture.

The freedom & fear, the empowerment & risks of internet culture,

There was a feeling of freedom and empowerment while doing this art piece, because I knew I wasn't doing anything wrong. In the internet culture, you have the option to express freedom of speech, you can empower people through pictures, quotes, advice, etc, however the internet has risks and it can bring fear to some people. It depends on how people deliver their messages on the internet or what you view on the internet, or what you do on the internet. On the internet you search up things that might interest you, or you can use it for school, such as research, etc. The risk is that many people depend too much on the internet and can sometimes be a waste of time, there can also be negative connotations towards the internet, like I mentioned before it depends.

2. Your thoughts about Copyright: is it working as is? Should it be strengthened, weakened, or modified?

My thoughts about copyright should be modified, It depends on how you use the images, music, etc. If you have permission from the owner, producer, director, that people should have the right to use it, however, don't claim it as your own work. It should also be strengthened, because there are many work out there claimed as their own, and just to be safe, it keeps the work of their original creator safe.

3. What license you’ve chosen for your work and why.

The license I chose for my work was, Attribution CC BY. The reason why I chose this was simply because I used other people’s work, and I feel like anyone should use other people's work to re-create art, of course giving credit to the original creator. To create my art piece, I used another app, to combine the two pictures.

4. Your experience of making your Remix piece. How did you do it? Did it come out as you expected? Were there surprises? Challenges? Insights?

My experience of making my art remix piece was overall fun.Originally I wanted to do a remix of my two favorite Oldie songs, but it was very challenging, since I'm not a pro at remix, so I decided to a mashup of pictures.I used the app Pixlr because i'm familiarized with the app, I used the The Great Wave, first and then I added my picture by using “Double exposure”, and faded the two pictures out. It didn't come out as I expected simply because I didn't know what pictures to use, so I used the pictures The Great Wave off Kanagawa, by Hokusai, and a Photo of mine that I took this year in San Francisco- The Silver Terrace, in the end It came out good, because it combined together, this was a fun and creative experience.

D6- Activity: Story telling

1. Through my photography im advocating the beauty of nature. The reason why I chose to do this topic is to make an impact on my audience to appreciate nature, and notice the beauty within.

2. I tried my best taking nice pictures, but overall I think I did a good job.

3. I believe the best image, is the pink flower one with raindrops. Its mainly focused on the details of the flower, and the raindrops. I love rainy days, and nature in general.

4. I believe the third picture where its showing a hand made heart, does not correlate to my story, but then again it does, because its advocating to my audience to love nature.

5. Something I would do differently is to take more pictures that are aesthetically pleasing to the audience.

6. Other stories I would like to tell, is simply notice your surroundings. Noticing your surroundings, you find beauty within small things, and makes you feel content.

1.Darwin Perez is currently pursuing his bachelor of fine arts, specializing in illustration and animation at Long Beach State School of Art. He was also born and raised in Los Angeles. His passion for Art-drawing, and animation, started as a child, when he would watch cartoons, and started to draw cartoon characters. His goal as an artist, is to create wonderful art, and make an impact on children.

2. Analyzing Darwin's work the first thing that stood out to me as part of their audience, was the colors that were incorporated in his work. Colors ranged from pastel to dull colors. In addition, his animation art ranged from big to medium art. For one of his art pieces, he first did a sketch without color showing the character “Stephanie Plum” different actions, from there colored her in, which consisted of dark and light colors. In Darwin's work, he makes two art pieces, the same cartoon, and the other four, different themes.

3. Darwins describes his art, being his early childhood memories, when he would watch cartoons as a kid. His passion for drawing animation started as a child, when his mom would put cartoons, and started to draw characters from the cartoons. He describes his art, as a representation of his childhood. When he draws, he loves to “ give characters expression and I love to learn how they were drawn that way.” His goal as an artist, is to make an impact on children, with his dream career as an animator and character design.

4. As part of his audience, when I saw his artwork, it immediately brought childhood memories, when I would watch cartoons. My favorite art two pieces were the first two, which gave me the sense of looking at Dr. Seuss cartoons, and the last one, with the bear and the little girl. Overall, I loved his work, and it made an impact on me.

1. Before class on Wednesday, I went to go see if there was an artist there to have a conversation with, and I met Alan Ayub Vidalli. Alan Ayub Vidalli is a CSULB graduate, pursuing a Masters in Fine Art. I got to learn about his true meaning behind his art. In addition, he told me about how he was mixed, he is Italian and Lebanese. As an artist, he makes constant notes that he's interested in, his goal as an artist, he wants his audience to find beauty in simplicity.

2. In Alan’s Vidalli’s work, it consists of only two colors; clear and white. In the picture above, you can see the acrylics circular shape starting from the top going straight to jagged. For this art piece you would have to get closer to really get a view of his work. In the bottom picture, you can automatically see how large this art piece is, I remember viewing it from across as I walked in. The three crosses are symmetrically even, and as mentioned large. He mentioned what he used to make his work, he used laser cutting machines, and his designs were created in designs software.

3. Conversing with Alan, when I asked what were his ideas that he was trying to explore in his art, he replied “I believe in the beauty of simplicity.” In other words, the clear circular acrylics, I got to see the meaning of it; enduring beauty in clarity. I remember when he had asked me, “What did you think about the circular clear acrylics?” I replied, “Honestly, I thought it had to do something with buttons, but now that you're explaining your work, I see your meaning of work”. In Alans work, he relied on making things very little, to express the idea of catching yourself see, what you’re seeing,--- appreciating and taking recognition in the small things. With his art piece of three crosses, it symbolizes removal of clutter and complexity-- peak of fascination. When I asked Alan how long did it take to make his art pieces, he replied he does not know, it all happened quickly, due to the laser cutting machines, and the designs software, every piece is different, and it all takes time.

4. As part of his audience, I admire his work and agree with his message. Walking into the Dutzi gallery, I had no idea what his art piece with meant. With the clear acrylics I thought it had to something with buttons due to the circular shape, and his other art piece of the three crosses, I thought it had to something with math, but it had a completely different message. Coming out and conversing with Alan, I had left with the important message of finding beauty of simplicity- the ability to look at work that have very few elements, to find beauty within. Appreciating the little things that the universe brings.

D5.-Architecture & Urban planning -USU Wedge 1. I expressed my designs for changing the USU Wedge in drawings on paper with color. I felt as if I can truly jot my ideas quickly, and just put on a piece of paper of what's going on through my mind. While analyzing the building after class, I thought about how the purpose for that wedge is not only to make the building pretty, but to hold it up so the building would be preventable from collapsing from a natural disaster. So as you can see I decided not to fully take away the Wedge.

2. As you can see my designs, I would change the Wedge building by cutting it in half, putting it towards the middle. By removing the white bench that was originally there, causing the pathway to be bigger, and the wedge to be smaller, for more adequate space. In addition, the two stands that are originally in the middle of the wedge building, ( The newspaper stands) I decided to move it to the other side, where the other two benches are at, so It can still be visible and accessible.

3. With that design, more people would be able to move around and get by, and the other three benches are still there for people to sit. I like how with that simple design, im not fully removing the original design but just shorting it. My intentions are for people to get more people, it's very frustrating how with the USU wedge, it gets super crowded and if you’re in a hurry, you're going to either wait for people to get by, or go around. With my design, people won't have to worry about missing the bus, or get by, it would be easier to access.

4. After class, I went to analyze the building and thought about how I would make a better design for students to get by. The only trade off, is leaving the white bench, and leaving the wedge. Thus, I put myself in the designers/architect shoes, and tried to understand why they made that design. I thought about how they used the cow steps method, where they probably based their idea on that, and observing students how they would get by. I had to fully analyze and have a fully thoughtful process, and making sure that im not excluding the creators ideas. With my design, I created more space for students to get by and used the cow method, and thought how less crowded it would be.

5. A year from now, students would probably feel relieved that a new design is coming, with a better pathway. Students would feel good that there won't be a wedge, with a crowded scene. Im sure how theres embarrassing moments that the wedge brought, an example would be is either bumping into people, get hit by people, or bumping your leg into the wedge. This design would be a positive outcome to everyone.Not only does It benefits student but it benefits tourists, teachers, everyone!, no more crowded scenes.

Student choice

1. I chose to do “Everything is going to be okay, and everything will fall into place” a quote that is so vague but has lots of meaning to it. Life sometimes throws us obstacles, that we feel like we aren’t going to make it, that we feel stuck, that we feel like crap because that one situation doomed us, but in reality it’s what helps us grow, making us become a better person. Often as humans, we go through things that we don't discuss with anyone, or were stressed thinking of how the future will play out, if we made the correct decision. Been there, done that, I myself, I tend to overthink and dwell on the things that could've been or should have been done, or the most famous two words “What if”. When I have anxiety, or when I know im going to over think, I try to calm myself down, and put my faith in God, or I look at positive quotes that make me feel better, also I like to post positive motivating quotes on Instagram, to remind my followers that in the end, “everything is going to be okay, and everything will fall into place”.

2. I chose to do “My Reminders” from my iPhone as my medium to express the idea to remind myself that everything will be okay. This is important because not only does it remind me everyday but this can help others too, if others need that important reminder, or quote, they can just type it and it’s easy because it is already installed in their phone.

3. I felt like this was successful for me because I truly expressed my feelings and opinions and I know this message will help someone out there.

4. My experience was a thoughtful process, and also a reminder. This project helped me realize that words can truly have an impact on you, motivate you or improve your day.

5. This project means a lot, as mentioned before this quote gets me through the day when I need it the most. I hope this message, at least helps someone, or make someone smile.

1. The Gallery I chose to do was “A-Number, You’re A number? My A-Number? Am I A- Number? By Heidi Fernandez Saavedra, and Valeria Fragoso. Before class, I had the pleasure of interviewing Heidi Fernandez Saavedra, who is one of the contributors to this project. She is currently an undergraduate senior student pursuing her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Sculpture. Her ideas on exploring in her work, is bringing awareness to people the sad reality that children and families go through when they are separated and put into immigration detention centers.

2. Analyzing Heidi’s and Valeria’s work, you notice the foiled-like blankets, the black mats on the floor, and the projection video of gates. As I felt the texture of the foiled-like blankets, they were very thin. The colors that immediately stood out, was metallic grey, the black mats, and the dark room, they mostly used dark colors in their work. In their gallery, they used audio, video projection of gates, the foil blankets that are actually used in immigration detention center, and lastly, the black mats. Her work took about three months to complete, starting from summer, to do research, gather materials, and the audio.

3. When I was speaking to Heidi Fernandez Saavedera, and I saw her work I knew I wanted to write about her gallery. As I was having a conversation with her, I asked about her ideas exploring in her work, and she responded that her main goal is to remind people, and bring awareness, that the issue of children and families being separated by ICE, is still occurring and there should be something done in order for this tragic reality to end. She also told me how frustrating it was finding research for her work, that this issue is not fully aware by our society, since the Media does not provide full on details, so her goal is for her to make it be known with what she is provided with. Adding on, she wanted her audience to feel and know what the children, families, feel, and how it would be like to live in those inhumane conditions, to be confined from the outside world, and lastly what it would be like to be just known as an A-number (Alien Registration number they use for immigrants at detention center).

4. As part of her audience, I gotta say I felt a connection with the gallery. The reason I felt drawn to this gallery is because as a daughter of immigrants, I felt the fear that the children felt being separated by their families, I felt the pain of the parents as they said to their children crying “It's going to be okay”, and I felt the chills inside the gallery, I started to tear up because this is a tragic reality that happens everyday, I can not picture what it would be like to have my parents taken away at a young age . I loved how this gallery brought awareness of a glimpse of what goes on inside the immigration detention center. I truly believe that their art, brought a message.

D3. Speech Actions

#IstandwithImmigrants

1. I chose to draw this picture to express my opinion of what has our world come to, in todays terms. It gets worse and worse everyday. The saddest thing is that our president dosent care if putting the wall separate families, or the American Dream. Parents, individuals, come here for a better living, fleeing from poverty, or dangerous drug dealers/gangs. If it wasn’t for my parents immigrating here, I would not be here with an education, and a better living condition. Thank you mamá y papá ❤️ I want to let people know that I stand with immigrants, and they should have the opportunity for a better life.

2. My medium, was paper, pen and color pencils, Something I would do different, instead of color pencils, I would incorporate paint and use a bigger paper.

3. This was successful, because I really thought about what I really wanted to express my feelings/opinions about this situation.

4. Next time I would use paint, and draw, and color a better picture.

1.Christopher Suarez is a senior currently working towards his MFA degree in Ceramics at Long Beach State School of Art. He also was born and raised in Long Beach. Besides art being his passion, he also enjoys playing sports. Christopher also spends most of his time sketching or making different things that are around in our surroundings, in which he gets most of his ideas to construct art. His goal for the audience is to “reflect on and reconnect with the world around us”.

2.Analyzing Christophers work, the first thing that stood out to me as part of their audience, was the beautiful drawings that were drawn in wood, with different designs. Also, the different pieces of metal that were constructed into swirls ranging from light colors such as blue and white, to darker colors, mostly the colors were muted. I noticed there were different sizes of ceramics, from big to small, to white to dark. I have also seen, wood plates, wires, with different designs, representing mayan and aztec’s designs. According to Suarez, his art project took at least the whole summer up until now, so in total of five months.

3.Christopher being a Mexican-American, his art represents his Long Beach community. Christopher describes his art, being his early childhood memories when he would cruise around from Long Beach to Wilmington, to go to his cousins house . His work also symbolizes “familial history, love and intimacy, and urban infrastructure.” In other words, his art represents the sweat, blood, tears, that architecture brings, the “... deconstruction of the elements that make up our world.” His ideas of exploring in this work, was mostly from being observant to his surroundings as a child and giving back to his community.

4. As being part of his audience, I totally agree with his work and felt a connection. Me being an observant person, I literally take time to look and appreciate our surroundings. When I see a construction worker, or see something built, I take something out of it and put it into deep thought. I thought his work was beautiful, and his message as well.

D2. Zines (Identity)

1. I chose to do “All about me” Zine to give you guys an idea of my identity. This zine gives a general idea of who I am and my interests as a human being.

2. I wish I could've been more aesthetic, and more artsy, but I tried my best.

3. Other things I would explore in my art in the future, is trying other ways to express my identity, by making it more personal, or by expressing it in another ways, maybe adding photographs, or comics.

The Gallery I chose to do was Hanjialin Bao. Hanjialin is currently pursuing her masters degree in Fine Arts. She graduated from Xiamen University, she's a graphic designer, comic and a storyboard artist, and is currently attending CSULB. Her goal is to incorporate traditional Chinese art in the modern American merchandise.

As I was analyzing Hanjialin’s art, immediately you can see the warming pastel colors and then the bright color red. In her art, you can also see how much time she invested to do beautiful pieces. She made her art very smooth, You can see the details of every piece such as patterns, by making her art big, and using up most of the paper. In her exhibition you can definitely see her culture through her beautiful art.

Hanjialin grew up in China, and most of her inspiration is where she grew up. Hanjialin Bao wants her audience to appreciate and learn Chinese culture, specifically in chinese myths and legends. In her project, “Gui”, she expresses Chinese traditional culture, and her own myth world. She introduces Chinese culture to Modern American art. She states that she gets her inspiration from “... Chinese realistic painting, makeup and clothes from Beijing Opera and decorations [from] kites…”, that she grew up in her culture. In her drawings, she uses detailed patterns, traditional clothing and accessories, that women wear.

Overall, this was my favorite gallery out of all. Immediately I knew I wanted to write about her gallery. I loved how she expressed her culture in her art, and wasn't afraid to express her voice. As part of her audience, seeing her work, made me admire her culture and her art.

D1. Finger painting

As I was in the process of doing finger painting, I often found myself frustrated since Im so used to being told what to do, I felt like I was stuck, but in the moment I let myself go, my fingers just went all over the paper and it turned out to be like this. This was an easier project to do, as I was looking at other classmates finger painting, I knew I was okay, not everything has to be perfect. In the end this experience felt liberating.

1.Out of the four art galleries, I chose to do Jillian Thompson Gallery. Not only was her gallery exhilarating, but her art represented herself and her culture. Jillian Thomson is a Graduate student, in her last year, in the art program of MFA Jewelry and Metalsmithing. 2. As I was exploring Jillian Thompson work, I automatically saw bright colors, and different types of work with different messages. The one that brought my attention instantly was the huge display of synthetic hair hung in rows that she claimed to wear, as stated, it took her “… two months to create”. In her other two display of work, she used print, paint, and the wrapper that synthetic hair come in. I also saw graffiti displayed in two separate pieces of wood painted in white that had at least four dark colors all mixed together, that said “Ode to sister hood”. Lastly, the other art that was displayed was a dark, mixed with some colors, with gold chains, and synthetic hair. 3. In all of Jillian Thompson’s art, it screams a particular message that she wants the audience to know. Her message is about “..issues of gender within the Hip Hop community.”, the beauty within Black women, and her growing up within her community. In the first huge display,with the rows of synthetic hair, her art represents different hair styles she grew up doing, and how other cultures take this, and claims to be “…trend, when it’s been around for a long time”. It also “…evokes the feelings of having braids installed; sitting in a chair while other black women puts hours of labor in to your hair style…”. In her other display of art of graffiti, “Ode to sister hood” represents how Jillian sees black women, and she wants to celebrate them for their beauty. The other art that had golden chains, and synthetic hair, symbolizes the issues of gender, that occurs within the Hip hop community. She chose to do chains to symbolize how “black femininity and what it means to be a woman within the Hip Hop community, and within society”. Lastly, her art that had printed pictures, and vivid colors, represents herself and her friends, she says she got her inspiration from her Instagram freed, and her friends. Overall her message is for women to feel comfortable and feel confident by being their true self, and that it is okay to be different. 4. Seeing her work, made me admire her work and her true message as she was giving her explanation. This was a fun and educational experience as part of her audience. As her audience, it had a great impact on me, that it made me have a different perspective than what I had before. I truly got to see her message within her art.

C. 2D Art Painting- Graffiti writing

hello everyone! As you can see I did my graffiti at home, using Dollar tree supplies and Home Depot spray paint! overall this was a fun experience, and challenging to do the bubble letters for my name since it was my first time and my name is long, but definitely would try again with a bigger cardboard and practice with bubble letters.
