Weekly Summary - Week 9
This week Iâve got the bulk of the essay finished and I was able to gather a few more book references as well. Since this week has been mostly cleared up I was able to at least type up 2 and a half paragraphs. Hopefully next week I can finish up with the concluding paragraph
RESEARCH - GRAMMAR OF THE SHOT
A book mainly discussing the importance and nuance of different shot types by Christopher Bowen and Roy Thompson. I mainly used this book for its quote on importance of the 180 degree rule in film making and how it can be effectively used.Â
âit is an imaginary line drawn through the shooting location, roughly where all of the main action occursâ
Research - Medium Shots
http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=31096&seqNum=2
This is a website published by Pearson called Peachpit. An article by Dan Alban discusses the use of medium shots in film and how they can be used to display body language, facial expressions and dialogue. It can be used to display various emotions through the actor and film.
âBody language is important to conveying emotion, and the medium shot remains close enough to capture that emotionâ
Weekly Summary - Week 8
This week I have started the introduction to my essay on comparing the character introductions in both Cowboy Bebop and Pulp fiction. Next week I hope to continue the essay with a couple more paragraphs. Unfortunately this week has been really busy with deadlines, so I didnât really have much space to do as much.Â
Neon Genesis Evangelion - 1995
NGE is one of the most critically acclaimed anime and is internationally recognized as one of the best animated shows out there. It has had a massive influence on the anime industry and how modern anime is created, directed and produced. Most consider this more of an art house show, thanks to itâs director Hideaki Anno carefully directing each episode to convey as much information as possible without directly telling the audience, which was almost unheard of at the time. The show uses a lot of establishing shots and long shots to convey the lonely and melancholic tone that the show is well known for.
Berserk (1997)
This is an 1997 anime adaptation of the popular comic, Berserk. This animation is series is great as it establishes the tone of the show early on with its opening cinematic and opening monologue for every episode (see below).Â
Grease (1978) is a great study of classic film musicals and how they are composed cinematography wise.Â
Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001)
This is an example of a great animated film from the early 2001, which makes the CG technology look outdated, but by itself its a decent movie with lots of cinematography. It also makes a good use of a montage sequence in the film.Â
The Room (2009)
Known as the Citizen Kane of bad movies, The Room is infamous for its poor cinematography, writing and editing skills displayed by Tommy Wiseau, who wrote, starred and directed the film which was originally pitched as a stage play. This is a good example of what NOT to do when making a movie such as not paying attention to audio editing, continuity editing and overall acting.Â
Weekly Summary - Week 7
This week hasnât been quite productive, as I have had other projects in the background. Hopefully next week Iâll be able to continue working on the essay.
RESEARCH - ROCKETJUMP FILM SCHOOL - CUTS AND TRANSITIONS 101
This is a good video essay discussing the art of cuts and transitions in films, and the importance of good editing to create a believable story. It also explores the different kinds of transitions, how they are used, what kinds of films use them and the history behind those transitions.Â
RESEARCH - THE MASK EXPLORED
A video essay by Ryan Hollinger posted on YouTube, where he has an in depth discussion about the film The Mask, and the nuance of its narrative and its narcissistic approach to a crime film with childish, over the top editing, acting and surface narrative.
RESEARCH - EVERY FRAME A PAINTINGÂ
A video essay uploaded on youtube that explores the question of âwhat makes good editing?â. The video explains that this mainly has to do with displaying information and emotion to the audience through eye contact, when to show emotion and how long to show emotion to make the the audience reception more impactful.Â
