In a throwback to Fahrenheit 451, the novel in which Ray Bradbury conceptualizes a government that censors its citizens by the burning of books, we may be witnessing a modern example through internet video service, You Tube, and its acquiescence to the request (demands?) of the Unites States government along with several others including the UK and India to remove videos of citizen protests and videos similar in theme.

The most recent example of this is You Tube’s compliance with the Great Britain’s request that they remove footage of a British group protesting the arrest of Judge Michael Peake. Peake was arrested because he refused to pay a council tax which he legally proved was an illegal tax.

The Google Transparency Report  lists the videos it has removed from You Tube (Google owns You Tube) as well as search terms it has removed and “data requests” Google has assented to submit to various governments. Often, these data requests would reveal the true identity of the You Tube user. In 2009, Google received 3,580 of these requests from the US government.

Google holds that the reason is its desire to comply with local laws, but one might wonder how a internet search could be unlawful. All signs show government and internet companies holding hands, practicing censuring in the name of civil law.

At least China was up front about its censorship practices in blocking internet services nationally, whereas Google vaguely cites a non-specific law.

If the world wide web it to remain a conduit of free speech, citizens must keep an eye on the slowly creeping censorship through the partnering of the federal government and large internet corporations such as Google, leest we become the sequel to Bradbury’s Farenheit 451.
