all in all, halime was glad to have darius with her. while melina knew her like no one else, there were parts of her that only darius knew how to deal with. the werewolf part, the alpha part, the part that had lost its purpose when she lost her pack all those years ago. people could know of loss and grief, but halime had always thought that losses among werewolves hit them the hardest. 

drawing in a breath, halime ran her fingers through her hair as she sat down, inhaling the homey scent of the dewy grass. her fingers then touched the green under her feet and when she heard darius bring up a fight club, she couldn’t help but chuckle. “don’t you think that’s a little too clicle? even for us?” because she could have sworn she’d seen or heard of a movie where wolves ran an underground fight club. “there’s always small wolfsbane doses, but i’d rather not hurt myself or my own like that.” she told him, picking on a little grass and tossing it at him. “it’s only for a few days… the peak is behind us, so soon, we’ll be able to shift.” hali let out a soft groan, feeling comfortable enough around darius to let him see her in pain. her wolf was restless. “i’m just glad everyone got home safe. at least my brain can now relax.”

Darius sat down next to her chuckling about her response to his idea “Perhaps but that doesn’t mean it’s wouldn’t work” He smirked and shrug playfully. Darius couldn’t help but make a face at the mention of wolfsbane “Wouldn’t that be the same as what humans do with ayahuasca, I mean no judging but if I want to find some peace or illumination in my life not sure if I want to end up getting poisoned and puking nonstop. But hey there’s an idea for a conspiracy, cult, crime book, a pack that believes they would go to the spiritual wolf in the sky by drinking wolfsbane…”  Darius laughed but truly was thinking would read that book. He lay down on the grass and nodded before sitting down again “Yes I guess it’s just for a few more days, nothing more some extra workout can fix.” Darius smiled at his alpha “They all are so you deserve to relax, if you want we can go for a little more run and then for a big steak?”.

adjustment took time, and it wasn’t easy for everyone. kareem remembered having to adjust to a new life without soccer being the center of it, or everything, and while it hadn’t been easy, it helped that they had been able to find something to focus on. “you’re not a teenager anymore, though. is it really so important that you fit in? isn’t it better to stand out?” they asked, leaning back against their seat and bringing their coffee with them to casually sip on it. “just do you job and find something to focus on. like, a higher purpose or simply, a fat paycheck to drown out all of the noise. like i said, fitting in isn’t everything in the grown-up world, i think.” but then again, they didn’t really know how this fancy schmancy lawyer world worked. they could understand politics and all, but they were stranger to lawyers. “doesn’t that come with the job, though? the suit thing?” at least, according to the media, it did. “things are alright on my end. my abstract powers are getting the best of me, that’s why i picked this place… i don’t want to keep on feeling everything from everyone all the damn time.” kareem sighed, frustrated with all of these emotions that they kept on picking on because of the moon. “i’ve asked for the week off at work, because… it’s been hard. last night i left with a migraine. it’s been too much on me. but–other than that, things have been okay, i guess. samhain was eventless, so that was a plus. how’s your pack doing?”

He would hate to admit that even when he was not a teenager he still had a feel to fit in many shoes, and it was very stressful and frustrating. He simple smiled at Kareem and nodded “Right. I mean have you see me, with my height is hard not to stand out”. After all they seemed to have their life figured out a lot more than he did and in Darius mind that as extremely shameful and it was part of what he usually hides. “Yeah, the suit on a firm usually means, have to wear a suit, like them or not” He heard Kareem’s life status, it was hard not to worried, even when he did had some moon problems, and got some headaches every now and then what they were telling seemed like a very tiering and painful thing to live with. “That sounds painful, does it stop at some point?” He smiled “Well I’m glad other than that things are good with you. As for me, well you know the moon can get in the way, but nothing that I’m not used to by now and is just for a few days, I just do a lot more workout and running to release some of the stress.”

although the moon’s peak was behind them, halime knew her pack and her would still be feeling the implications of the eclipse for the next two to three days. which meant her wolf would be restless and angry for that time frame… until she was able to set it free, by going deep into the woods and letting her out for a few hours. it was frustrating, to say the least, especially when some new member of her pack were bitten wolves, therefore, wouldn’t have the chance of doing just that. not until the next full moon. it angered her even more not to be able to help them. this should have been easier. she should’ve been able to help… after all, she was their alpha.

“i hate this.” she confessed to darius while taking a break from their run in the woods, after all, she needed to let go of this pent up energy. “i hate that there’s nothing i can do. i hate eclipses.” she also knew that there was nothing that darius could say or do that would make her feel better, but having him there was already good enough. “did everyone get home safe? did you check?”

The feeling was mutual, he had to admit he hate it too, starting with the point with he was most of the time very moody, when eclipses came things became five times frustrating. He looked at his alpha and nodded, there was no point in contradicting her when they both felt like they didn’t have control over their bodies or feeling.

He looked at the phone “Yes, I was waiting for one last check-up, but they all did” He looked at her, “We can start a fight club over it, I’m sure everybody would be in if we did, cause we all want to go all anarchist and crazy on nights like this” Darius smirk playfully at Halime, he knew there was no way it was a good idea, especially in the condition most of them were. He cracked his neck and stretch out his muscle trying to liberate some tension, even if there was no way he could completely “On a night like this I wish there was like a magic potion that would just put on a high, happy sleepy mood, instead of this nerve-wracking frustrate feel.”

While exchanging a conversation with a stranger and her drink was the object she had her hues focusing on; Melina listed everyone she could bother at that moment. While Halime was usually her main option to go to, as an alpha her friend had plenty to deal with during the full moon. However, the closest thing to an alpha could be bothered for a brief second, right? Would her friend complain about it later once Melina called Darius requesting his presence and it’d keep him from the pack for a few minutes? An hour or so? She didn’t know. She would know once Melina met Halime back at their place.

“I need to channel my frustration at something, or someone. And you’re usually the only one that can endure it. But– don’t brag about it, okay? It doesn’t mean I need you or anything like that.” She would roll her eyes if she ever caught a glimpse of a smirk resting over his lips. “How’s the pack? How’s Halime?”

Darius was already heading back home when he received a message, and even when he knew if he accepted it would mean an hour or so of constant teasing, he would always find it a lot more fun than going to an alone apartment. So without much thought, he went exactly to where Melina had told him to meet.

It never took much for their usual dynamic to start, it was weird when they didn’t. He smirked “Sure… You know I’m going to start thinking that I’m on your favorite list, but don’t worry I won’t tell anyone.” He lowered down so that the last part would sound like it was a secret between them, even if he was a little louder so anyone near them could hear it. “The pack is good, as for Halime, I’m not sure is in the right place to tell you, other than the moon affecting all of us, she is focused on the pack and she’s a great leader to all of us, but you know how she is, she is very good at hiding when something troubles her so I with her is better to ask her and digging with a little spoon, but you know this better than anyone.”

a chuckle escaped their lips as darius went on. they were more worried about court schedules than anything, since that was out of anyone’s hands, but since kareem wasn’t exactly familiar with that lawyer, tailored suits kind of world, they thought that asking was their best way to get a bit familiar. “maybe you should take less pro bono cases, then?” i mean, sure. helping people was always good, but, like darius had said, bills also needed to be paid. “no rest for the wicked, mate.  but like… a coffee boy though? wearing those fancy suits? are you sure this isn’t just you trying not to be like them?” because that could also be a thing. “other than that, is everything okay at work?”

He sighed knowing Kareem was right, it was better for him if he stopped, but at the same time, he felt like he was disappointing his father, by not working on cases that would help people and make a change. Darius wasn’t sure his father would like the job he had, all the fancy suits and working for people that he would dislike. “I’m not sure I fit in” but with that said he nodded “But yeah, everything cool there, I think it’s just the moon that makes me a little grumpier about the whole idea of wearing suits.” He shrugged with a smile “I feel like now I’m just being boring complaining about my job. How’s everything on your side?”

they returned to their table of choice, bringing along double cup holder with their to-go cups of coffee and a small tray with the baked goods they had both previously decided on. “you sure they’re not going to schedule any court days for the game days?” they asked, continuing the conversation they had started before arriving at the cafe and that had to be interrupted by kareem going to order their foods and drinks. “i mean, i know it’s the world cup and all, but i don’t know how these things work. are you still working independently, or have you managed to join any of those fancy law firms?”

Darius kept looking at the match schedule over his phone a little, all frustrated. “I mean I’m trying the whole fancy law but I feel like I'm more of a coffee boy than an actual lawyer and some people calling me the Pro Bono guy, and yes I know I like to work with people that deserve my help, but I need to pay for things too.” Darius kept looking at his phone “Ugh, I mean I know we get a world cup every 4 years, but  this is the last world cup of the two best players in history, having to lose all the games sounds horrible. But watching it over phone sounds even worst, at least I’m wishing since the boss is Canadian and Canada is on it, I will get a break.”

“Aw, why thank you — what a gentleman you are! That’s rare around here.” Jinyi smiled and beckoned Darius to follow her outside. “You don’t need to be a hero though. All these guys—” She pointed at a few Trillions members who gave her a curt nod. “—do that for me.” She then leaned in to whisper: “But between you and me, they sometimes suck at their jobs, not gonna lie.” That was perhaps one of the downsides of accepting nearly anyone in the coven.

Jinyi practically ran out onto the balcony, or as fast as she could while wearing high heels. Away from the crowd and the colours, she was finally able to relax a little. She then turned around to look at Darius. “What’s wrong? You look like you needed this fresh air more than I did.” She giggled a little. “Sorry, I’m not laughing at you. It’s just… are social gigs like this not your thing?” Jinyi then turned her attention upwards to look at the stars in the night sky. “Don’t worry. I get it. I know I might not seem like it since I was tonight’s host, but I really fucking hate gatherings like this.”

He chuckled “No problem. I wasn’t planning on being a hero but I’m sure company can be needed” Darius smiled and reply her whisper “Perhaps you should consider changing them, safety is important.”

Darius followed the Jinyi and took a sip of his drink, before he could reply to any of her question he smiled at her “Let’s just say I’m more of a beer guy in a small party of friends, not to mention the dress code can be tricky at times, it’s quite demanding, obviously if you are wearing dress and heals, it gets even more demanding in my opinion, but I’m just not a super fashionable guy. If you are into it, you probably have very fun at this kind of events.”

|| Location: Zhao Towers, Banquet Hall || Time: Evening || Status: Open to everyone

Samhain was one of the rare occasions on which the Zhao Towers were open for everyone and anyone to come into. With the lack of needing Protectors, the enticement of free food, and an unlimited open bar (with all blood types on tap), people’s inhibitions were perhaps more down than usual. But not Jinyi’s. Her contacts were doing a poor job of muting everyone’s auras. Colours were starting to mix into an unpleasant shade of shitstain brown with dark tendrils already creeping into the edges of her vision. 

She needed to get this night over quick.

“Good evening, everyone. I’m tonight’s MC, Jinyi Zhao. It is my distinct honour and pleasure to welcome you all to the Zhao Group’s Samhain Dinner Gala hosted here at Zhao Towers—” Jinyi continued on with the pomp and circumstance, the naming of the sponsors, and the polite pauses for acknowledgements and applause. This speech wouldn’t have passed any respectable university’s plagiarism detector with how cookie-cutter these speaking engagements needed to be. “—Lastly, as a friendly reminder, please note that the balcony will be closed for everyone’s safety. And once again, on behalf of the Zhao family and Zhao group, thank you for coming to tonight’s gala. Please enjoy and have a happy Samhain! Cheers!!” Jinyi raised their glass and toasted with those nearest to them.

As she made her way around the banquet hall, Jinyi eventually ended up standing next to someone. Who it was, she couldn’t immediately tell with the crowd’s auras mixing so thickly together. Jinyi tried to speak only loudly enough for the closest person to hear: “Hey, this is going to sound random, but do you mind hanging out with me on the balcony for a sec? My contacts don’t do as well as my glasses, and I think I need to get away from all the peop— I mean, lights. Thing is… I’m scared of the dark. I know, I know, okay? But I really need someone to be with me out there. Are you down? Please say yes.”

Darius felt a little odd, he always did at events like those, he always felt like he didn't belong. He had won his job at the firm, but he had wanted to do probono jobs, faught for supernatural rights causes, still there he was not sure what he was doing. Almost hidding and not sure with who he should talk. He saw a woman looking at him, he was a little confused, cause she seemed a bit off, but he wasn't sure as fore the why until she talked. "Sure I'm not sure what you need me to do, but I can walk with you and make sure everything is good outside."

CHARACTER INTERVIEW

What makes Astoria still appealing to you? Is it related to personal or work relationships?

Darius looked serious, these interviews never got old, he had been having them since he was a kid, but they still made him nervous. “Probably both, I have established here, My family, my friends, my pack, my job. It’s liberating to feel that you finally belong to a place where you are not judged by your name, your appearance, or your species. I have spent a long time being pointed out, here things have been different.”

What’s something about your personality that you’re proud of? And what would you like to change?

He chuckled “I truly suck at this question. I know psychologically that most say something about me, but anyway…” He scratch his beard and took a deep breath “I’m very proud of my loyalty and my protective nature, my father always said that I took my duties too seriously so you could say I’m very responsible. As for what I would change, my impostor syndrome without any doubt.”

Please elaborate on any violent circumstances you may have been involved with in the past.

The Wolf looked down and cleared his throat. “Years ago, my original pack was attacked by hunters, they received information from a hurt pack member that couldn’t handle the fact that they were not built to be the new alpha. We were betrayed and hunted, all because of the ambition of a man. My parents were very attached to the alpha’s family, they welcomed us after we had to escape Egypt, for me they were family…” He made paused “We were the only ones that got out of the hunt, and she deserved a new life, a fresh start, and not to be chased for the rest of her life for something that is in her nature.”

Your thoughts about supernatural beings.

He took a sip of the water in front of him “I’m not into the super word in front of it, I think it gives us more power than we have, and well saying we are special is an overstatement too. Humans need to realize, that yes, we are different than them, we have features that might make us outstanding, but not to the point that we should be exterminated. We suffer from the same things as them, wanting to find a job, to make a family, keep them protected, pretty much the same.”
