you know, if Utena got the tadc character development treatment, we would get the final episode where utena forgives saionji(and the previous couple episodes would be for some reason dedicated to the development of their borderline romantic relationship while anthy gets sidelined, only briefly acknowledged at the end as utenas "best friend") and everyone else's issues get resolved off screen, and there would be a credits montage, where all the sudents stay in ohtori academy and play beach volleyball and dnd with akio. and there wouldn't be any sword fights, just a couple of shots of juri sadly looking at the locket or smth
(I'm not fully equaling saionji and jax and acknowledge jax as a trans woman. it's just that they have kind of similar brand of misogyny. I'm also definitely not equaling caine and akio in character sense, just in position. I said "treatment" because I mostly criticise storytelling and not the characters)
you know, very nice of you to post the "Shinji choking Asuka" gif in response to this. very classy.
Anthy is a (teenage!!!!) girl in a continued situation of abuse who lashes out subtly and understandably at people who PROVOKE her, who RESPONDS to Utena's attempts to reach out to her, whose reaction to how much she's hurt her is deeply unsurprising because change is scary, and in the end finds the courage to move on.
Jax is a GROWN ASS ADULT and an abuser who spends all of her screentime being an abusive prick to other characters (who have done NOTHING to wrong her), never gets consequences and comeuppance, dies and the narrative makes everyone mourn her despite the pain that's been caused to them that they're not even allowed to process on-screen.
Jax isn't even remotely on the same level as Anthy. try again when you're ready to RESPECTFULLY disagree with people instead of doing this.
I watched the TADC finale and I need to get some things off my chest.
(long rant/vent under the cut. very salty and very annoyed. scroll by if you don't like hate of the show or annoyance with fandom nonsense. also contains spoilers for Umineko and Revolutionary Girl Utena.)
if I see ONE MORE PERSON compare Jax TADC to Anthy or Beatrice I'm going to LOSE MY MIND.
now, there's nothing wrong with seeing yourself in Jax or anything, of course. I'm not saying that you're a bad person if you do. this isn't about you, this is about a fandom trend that annoys me.
on one hand, we have a girl who has been abused since her childhood, vilified by everyone around her and used as a tool by her own incestuous brother. stuck in a living hell, passed around by people she's supposed to do everything and more for. even though another girl tries and tries and tries to reach out to her over and over and over again, the abused is so afraid of what life beyond her endless abuse could be like that she literally backstabs the one person trying to help her. and yet, at the end, she finally finds the courage to leave her abuse behind her. she's most certainly not perfect (her torment of Nanami can especially be highlighted here, as are all the little displays of passive aggression), but she's been consistently and clearly shown as a person in a horrible situation reacting appropriately.
on another hand, we have a girl whose life was ruined before it even began. despite being bullied on her job for being too young, she still tried to live her best life - playing pranks, reading mystery novels, bonding with the family she was assigned to serve, even falling in love with one of them. when that one didn't come back, she attempted to fall in love with another. as she created "personas" for her to take to cope with the increasing dysphoria over her body. and then she learned the truth. that she was a product of that very family's patriarch's parental incest. her body wasn't working right because she sustained severe damage from falling off a cliff when she was but a baby. and she was related to everyone she fell in love with. not only that, but her previous love, one she tried to forget, was coming back. what choice did she have? what could she possibly do about her situation? whatever she chose to do would turn into a lie! and thus, unable to cope with something so horrible, she could only think that everyone in the family, including herself, deserved little else than death... and even though in reality she hadn't killed anyone, she still felt guilt for instigating the crime, and, unable to bear facing the world even with her love at her side... she killed herself by drowning. and she fully acknowledged that it was her fault that the last surviving member of the family was in such a horrible situation.
I love both of these characters to death, if you couldn't tell. they're very near and dear to my heart. they're problematic, they caused a lot of harm to people around them, and I still care so deeply about them.
but then we get to the third one. the Spotlight-Stealing Squad. the abuser. the only person who mattered in a narrative that supposedly billed itself as an ensemble cast.
the one who spends her entire screentime either committing abuse or feeling sorry for herself. the one whose favorite pastime is bullying a vulnerable fragile woman who cries all the time. the one who consistently, time after time, rejected all the help given to her. the one who refused to change until the very end and died having never apologized nor faced any consequences for her actions.
Anthy and Beatrice are in CONTINUED situations that feel truly, utterly hopeless. Jax found herself in a friendly environment and preferred to subject someone else to social isolation.
the other two's main victims, Nanami and Battler (and Ange by extension), get to be explored plenty (since Utena actually understands how to do its ensemble cast). Jax's main victims only get a few minutes to themselves, not even allowed to feel complex feelings about their abusers, not developed past mentions and allusions to their trauma.
and after watching Jax never, not once, not even remotely express remorse for anything, never apologize, never take accountability, never accept the help repeatedly offered to her... we're still supposed to feel sad? we're still supposed to be satisfied when Pomni (who saw her KILL her best friend, mind you) hugged her? we're supposed to think "isn't she lovely"???
Anthy reminded me of myself when I was younger. Beatrice made me feel seen with the ways she was plural.
Jax reminded me of my abusers whose main defense against me was to talk about how sad it made THEM. how hard it was when I begged them not to kill themselves. and how painful existence was for THEM. and how much they needed to be reassured how not-horrible they are.
let it be known that I despise "can character X be a Rose Bride" discourse going around the Utena fandom, ESPECIALLY as someone who likes the RGU boys and sees them as capable of being Rose Brides due to how they're obviously abused by the same system as everyone else.
HAVING SAID THAT... Jax is the top dog abuser of the circus. the person who makes life a living hell for everyone else, the person who KILLED someone by socially ostracizing them, and the only punishment he gets is feeling sorry for himself. and when I see THAT drawn in a Rose Bride dress, I can't help but wonder... is that REALLY what we're doing here? comparing the main abuse victim of her show to the main abuser of the other show?
and are we really comparing Beatrice's pretend-sadism to Battler to get him to understand something (which is also deeply allegorical for the issues of Tohya Hachijo) to Jax's ACTUAL, GENUINE SOCIAL MURDER OF SOMEONE?!
come on.
that's it, rant over. this is probably the first and last time I post something like this.
