10 Worst Moments in Star Wars Movies
10. Trade Federation
When Lucas created the Trade Federation he created a double threat. Not only do we have some weird Admiral Ackbar wannabe overlords with arguably the most annoying accent in Star Wars to date. But the most grievous offender is the recurring droid army, with enough “roger rogers” and child friendly stupidity to challenge nails on a chalk board for annoying.  You couldn’t even ignore it or forget about it like Jar Jar because it was in your face for 3 movies in almost half the scenes.
9. Phantom Menace Â
All 3 movies prequels were pretty much an exercise in contrived dialogue, posturing, and flash over substance. But this movie belongs on here because it set the tone for what was to come. This was made for children. Pretty much its main protagonist was a child. And is apparently the point where Lucas decided to create a plethora of glaring plot holes in the Star Wars saga. It also featured the Gungans, with Jar Jar Binks as a main character...
8. Jar Jar Binks Â
Speaking of Jar Jar, this could technically be the Gungans. Clearly the most ridiculous, and racially charged stereotype that Lucas created for this film series. But Jar Jar gets the nod because he carried the torch for an entire civilization after the 1st movie. And even though he barely does anything in Episodes II & III, every time you see those dopey ears and bulging eyes all you can do is have flashbacks to his stupid antics and “weesas”, “yousas”, and “mesas”.  If all this wasn’t bad enough, Lucas saw fit to make Jar Jar the catalyst for turning the republic in an empire just to rub it in our faces one last time. It basically taints the whole movie as much as the plot holes and crappy story do on their own.
7. Anakin romancing Padme on Naboo Â
Here is arguably one of the most contrived pieces of cinema ever conceived. I don’t know what to say about it, it’s so terrible.Â
The insanely cheesy dialogue (does Lucas watch a lot of daytime TV?), metaphorically pulling on her pigtails, impressing her by riding that cow. And to top it off, this broad is like 24-26, and he’s like 17-18, is it that easy to impress a young dynamic ambitious senator? I could have written a more convincing romance when I was in grade 3 and I still thought girls had cooties.
6. Padme’s Death Â
Now remember above where arguably the most contrived piece of cinema was discussed? Here’s one of the challengers folks... We won’t even discuss the massive plot hole created here (Leia remembering her mother being sad but apparently dying without even holding her). So we’ll just focus on the birth of the twins, and Padme’s death. All that needs to be said was how ridiculous the birthing sequence was. You can’t help but laugh at this scene: oomba oomba, a baby pops out, “Leia”, oomba oomba, another baby pops out, “Luke”, and then lights out… Seriously? You really rushed that one George. Now let’s move on to this “died of a broken heart” nonsense. Now, a mother will be naturally inclined to care for her progeny. Are we expected to believe that her love of a prepubescent tantrum throwing kid (who’s possibly slightly retarded) is going to outweigh the love of her new born children? Someone needs to give Lucas a little perspective here so he doesn’t keep shoving crap like this down our throats. Give your audience a little respect Lucas, it’s a tad insulting.
5. Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side Â
And the final challenger in our Triple Threat match for most contrived pieces in cinematic history… This is really commenting on the whole story arc. But I’m just going to focus on Return of the Sith. Is Anakin slightly Autistic? No offense to people out there with retarded family members. But he’s like the rain man of the force. He seems like he’s just throwing temper tantrums all the time and is about to start stomping his feet at any moment. He just decided to chop off Mace Windu’s arm when he found out the Chancellor was the Sith Lord. And then went on to choke his wife because he assumed Obi Wan was hitting that even though nothing that happened in the movie would ever lead us to believe that was a remote possibility. Not one bit of it is believable; a 10 year old could make better moral decisions.Â
At what point in his character development were most of his actions logical results of the events that preceded them? And the moral implications of those actions were often completely over exaggerated or just unrealistic. He’s going to spaz out because they won’t make him a Master at the tender age of 20 something? Aside from the previous knowledge of the original trilogy, we were given no believable justification that he would indeed turn to the Dark Side. Most of the arc was just Lucas throwing it in our face, telling us he’s going to become Darth Vader. Rather than putting thought in to showing us his descent. It seemed more like it was written for 12 year olds by 12 year olds. I could maybe see an argument if he started off as a brat. But he was more mature in the 1st movie than he was in the 2nd and 3rd, try and make sense of that.Â
4. Midi-Chlorians
What the hell is this? One of the many glaring plot holes George Lucas created in his prequel trilogy. With one brief definition, he single handedly removed the mysticism of the force from these epic movies, and consequently took a bit of the soul out of the franchise.
3. CGI/Special EffectsÂ
I’m of the belief that this guy is off his rocker. The problem seems to be is that there is much too much emphasis being placed on special effects, and not enough on content. He seems to only care about showing us what he’s imagining in his mind (hence the many re-releases/special editions) rather than telling stories. If we remove the flashy effects from the prequel trilogies, all we are left with is a completely vapid script, with terrible direction, and consequently poor execution by the actors. At the end of this clip here he talks about special effects and budget costs. This guy won’t even produce a TV show because he’d need a $50 mill budget per episode... The original Star Wars movies were cutting edge special effects for the time yes, but they are timeless in spite of the fact the technology is completely dated now. These new movies will be dated and crap when technology moves forward. Why can’t Lucas go back to making good movies with heart? Or was he ever really able to…Â
2. Special Editions/Re-Releases of the Original TrilogyÂ
Most of the scenes/changes from the many re-releases are pretty useless, forgettable, or unnoticeable; we can all pretty much tune out background effects, and preserve our memories of the original trilogy. I suppose Lucas never prescribed to the theory that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. With that being said, the Falcon flying through cloud city isn’t so bad, and adding in the scene where we were originally meant to first meet Jabba is pretty cool. However, there are a couple scenes we like to talk about a lot. Of the many special edition and re-released scenes, one in particular bothers me from RotJ. This one is unholy, it is when we remove Sebastian Shaw, and we super impose Hayden Christensen during the force ghost scene at the end of the movie (which detracts a little bit from one of the most emotionally climactic scene during Darth Vaders unmasking). And all while this is happening, they remove the original Ewok composed masterpiece that led in to the final credits, and replaced it with some stupid crap with flutes!  I’ve got fond memories of that Ewok song. Now you’re probably thinking this shouldn’t be on the list, let alone this high, but it’s a cumulative effect. These also represent something that is happening to the original films many of us grew up loving, that newer/future generations will never get to experience. It’s happening very slowly, bit by bit, scene by scene, in such a way that we are almost unaware that the original film is disappearing before our eyes. That original special edition was also prologue to the horror that would be the prequel trilogy. We should have known what was coming, all the signs were there.  But when you’re in love it’s easy to have the blinders on. This leads us to the #1 worst moment in Star Wars history…
1. Marcia & George Lucas divorce
This in my estimation is a case where there is definitely a good woman behind the man. The divorce between Marcia & George is the worst thing to happen to Star Wars. With the exception of The Last Crusade, George’s most heralded movies were when he was with this woman. It’s speculated (and confirmed by some) that she put the heart in to Star Wars; something that was severely lacking in the prequels (not to mention believable character relationships and good plot devices). I’m usually the last guy to admit something like; it needed a woman’s touch. But clearly Lucas can’t function properly unless he’s pussy whipped. I won’t go in to too much detail, there’s an interesting article here “The Secret History of Star Wars“ that is worth the read if you’re a Star Wars fan. All I can say is, I can imagine Lucas coming up with some asinine idea like Jar Jar Binks, and his wife giving him that look (guys know what I’m talking about) with a head tilt saying “really George?” Even in that picture it looks like she’s saying “George do you have downs? This is the stupidest shit I ever saw”. I’ll always wonder what could have been if the prequels were made with a priority towards story and believable character development rather than effects and drawn out light saber battles; while staying true to the content of the original films.
