Darla Cheval, 17, she/her

Darla (occasionally called 'Darling' by those close to her) was part of a wealthy household on the west side, daughter to Matt Cheval and Molly Geller. However, Matt often left town, with the excuse of visiting friends. He was really having an affair, one that went on for years. Not only that, but after learning of Molly's parentage and Judaism, when she finally gained the courage to tell her husband after 10 years of marriage, Matt chose to divorce Molly and marry a 25-year-old woman, smaller, blonder, and more American. Because Matt was wealthy, and Molly had almost nothing to her name, the divorce caused Molly to begin fending for herself and making a life on the West side. Darla stayed with her father until she was fourteen, as she could no longer stand her awful father or suffocating house. She was disowned and went into her mother's custody, and they've been trying to rebuild, even if they have nothing. Molly always tells Darla to conceal and hide the fact that she is Jewish, and is overprotective of her due to her being a vulnerable Jewish girl, without resources for protection. Darla wants to live life. She wants to make music. She wants a passion, a purpose. She wants to be Just Darla.

Looks: Curly and frizzy brown hair, olive-ish skin, with many freckles, a nose with a small dent in the bridge. She has big brown eyes. She has always felt like she stood out from the others around her.

Personality: A realist, and she misses sarcasm cues often. She gets very anxious, but tries to hide it under a mask. Occasionally, this comes off as bossy. She says she is spontaneous, but she is really just unspontaneously spontaneous. Darla is a very musical individual, and she loves to sing, make tunes/beats, and write verses. She gets distracted often, but when she is into something, she gives her 100%.

Likes: Music, her mom, songs, cats, writing, schedules, the occasional chaos, but to a certain degree, cigarettes, Coca-Cola, and real, nonsuperficial relationships. Dislikes: Her dad, her dads wife, loud noises, bigots, overprotection, those who value money above all else, and a lot more, but we don't have time to unpack all that

Darla thought she heard a noise by her house. Its nothing, she told herself. Yet she thought she heard the rattle of something. Her Ima was finally sleeping, and Darla wasn't gonna wake her. Could it be a Molotov? Those have been thrown before. A gun? Car motor?. She looked out the window. It was the rattle of a spray paint can.

Darla slipped her shoes on and quickly put a skirt over her pajamas. She opened the door.

"Excuse me, mister? Look, I appreciate art as much as anyone, but I would prefer you asked before decorating our drive. We ain't the owners of the house, and our landlord ain't gonna like this."

Damn, where did her seriousness come from? Fear, probably. It was impossibly hard to get the house. And Darla and her mom couldn't afford to pay for the new pavement while payin rent.

"Either you're gonna clean this right now and I can make you some dinner," she said with her head held high, even though her clothes and attire did not show off much confidence, "Or you are gonna get the fuck off my driveway and never look at me again."

"Name's Clay Burns. I drove over here from California a couple years ago."

"You've got to be kidding. You left Cali. for Tulsa. Shitty decision, if I do say so myself. I don't know why anyone would want to move here."

Darla chopped the potatoes and spread them out over a pan, then doused them in olive oil.

"A shame, but necessary. Now, come on in. But don't make too much noise, my ma is sleeping."

Clay was walking around, trying to find a spot for his latest art piece. He came across Darla's house. It looked empty.. There were no cars in the driveway, so he started spray painting. Not on Darla's actual house of course, but the driveway.

Darla thought she heard a noise by her house. Its nothing, she told herself. Yet she thought she heard the rattle of something. Her Ima was finally sleeping, and Darla wasn't gonna wake her. Could it be a Molotov? Those have been thrown before. A gun? Car motor?. She looked out the window. It was the rattle of a spray paint can.

Darla slipped her shoes on and quickly put a skirt over her pajamas. She opened the door.

"Excuse me, mister? Look, I appreciate art as much as anyone, but I would prefer you asked before decorating our drive. We ain't the owners of the house, and our landlord ain't gonna like this."

"Your landlord is boring, then," he said simply. "You deserve a driveway way more interesting than your landlord."

[darla-the-muse]

"So we should give up our home, then? Because I can say with confidence that we're either gonna be kicked out or made to pay to paint over the art. So it don't matter is he's boring or fun."

Damn, where did her seriousness come from? Fear, probably. It was impossibly hard to get the house. And Darla and her mom couldn't afford to pay for the new pavement while payin rent.

"Either you're gonna clean this right now and I can make you some dinner," she said with her head held high, even though her clothes and attire did not show off much confidence, "Or you are gonna get the fuck off my driveway and never look at me again."

I'm walking through the park, lookin for somewhere to sit and work on my music. It is early in the morning, and I don't expect to be interrupted. That changes, though, when I see a guy in my spot.

His eyes widened for half a second.

Yeah, he was. That was on purpose. He figured no one would be out here, which is why he was so surprised. He normally walked past here in the morning, but he decided to stay a while this time. Of course, he had no clue someone else would be coming out this early.

"...yeah, I guess I am."

I'm mildly annoyed, but I don't show it. I struggle with changes in my plans, and value consistency. Not sitting in MY spot is obviously difficult. But I need to act mature. Everyone sees that in me, anyways.

"Usually I... I sit there."

Shit. Am I being too direct?

I am being too direct. Shut up Darla. Learn social cues.

"I mean, I sit there often when doing music. This is a statement. Or comment? One of the two."

Shit Darla stop talking

"So um...are you planning on coming here to the park often?"

Damn it I'm screwed. It was worth a shot. Maybe my awkwardness will scare him away from the park and I'll get my spot back. But that's just petty. I wait for his response but also I'm panicking inside.

"...y'know, I can just leave if you really want me to."

A pause. Did he really care enough to tell her anything? Whatever, it wasn't like he had anything better to do.

"I normally walk past here, but I decided to stop about.... I don't know, 20 minutes ago? Like I said, I can leave if you want.".

"No, no. Don't worry about it, I don't even care that much anyways. I like that bench there" I point in a random direction and hope there is a bench there.

"Sorry for bothering you, bye..."

Fuck. I seem to love being awkward. Well, not actually. In the way I'm always doing things like that, I clarify to myself. I turn towards the direction I pointed in and scan around for a bench.

"No, really, it's fine. I should probably be back by now anyways..."

Ugh. Going back sounded awful, but he could tell this mystery girl was at least slightly annoyed with her. There wasn't a single bench near where she had pointed. She wasn't being subtle.

I look behind me. There isn't a single bench where I had pointed. I could run away in embarrassment.

"well...uh. You are already here, so you wanna hear my music? Just finished composin' it but nobodies hears it yet. Wanna hear?"

Hopefully after this he could understand that I wasn't usually this petty...

"...yeah, sure."

Anything to keep him out of the house. Besides, she seemed nice enough, even though he didn't recognize her...

She pulled out her flute from it's case. It was old, and one of the only things she was able to take with her before they were kicked out. She lifted her head and gave a small grin, before lowering her chin towards her flute.

The melody is slow, yet very detailed. Darla is nervous while playing, as its the first time she is playing in front of anyone other than her mother.
