だけど調べると、本家のFomulaがbitcoin core 0.14.2に対応しているっぽいので、アンインストールしてこっちにこっちを使う。 http://brewformulas.org/Bitcoin

bottleが提供されていたのでさっくり入った。バージョンを確認してみる。

bitcoin.confの設定とbitcoindの起動
デフォルトのデータディレクトリは $HOME/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin なので、ここにbitcoin.confを置くとよろしくやってくれる。ここでは以下のようにした。
