Dawn sat in the bunker coloring. Things seemed a little easier as of late. Not as many demons, no threat to end the world just normal monsters that could easily be taken care of by her father and uncle. Something did feel wrong though. Hearing the door to the bunker open Dawn looked up with a smile. “Daddy!” She said without looking excited to show her drawing to him.
daughter-ofa-hunter:
“no I don’t know it’s you. How could I not be sucpious after he makes a big ass speech about being better off without her? Why wouldn’t I doubt you when Jack vowed to keep those dead? If your dean prove it! Show me your him!” San commanded. Him still holding on close to his niece. “ Even if you are dean, I don’t know if Dawn would be better off having the life you lead. She needs stability, not all this hunting and demons. She needs a normal life, one that we didn’t have.”
“Sammy come on! How would I be able to get in your house if I was some demon or something! I saw the charms you have around the house! Dawn is my kid! I want to be a better dad! Sam you can’t do this! She is my kid!” He said in horror and then sighed lowering his head. “She’s my kid, I need time alone with her…”
“I dont know, but we...I have seen demons do some impressive things.” Sam answered. Every fiber of him wanted to believe this was Dean and he knew it was very likely it could be him. Yet they had encountered shapeshifters, demons levithans and other creatures that could take on others appearances. He wanted to be sure of who this was before getting Dawns hopes up. “Dawn, go upstairs for now okay? I`ll come get you in a bit. Ellie should be home soon and she`ll make you something if your hungry. Let me figure this out.”
When Dawn left. Sam took out a bag from the closet. It was his old dufflebag of hunting things, incase he needed it. Guns, knifes, holy water, silver. “Look, I know theres a habit of us coming back from the dead. I shouldnt be so surpised i guess...but he seemed so sure and Jack seemed so detirminded to not....look I need to be sure.”
he splahsed the holy water on him, no affect. handed him a silver knife. no affect.
Sam took in a deep breath and then lowered his head. “I see, I under Sammy.” He said and then picked up a silver bullet. “I just wanted a second chance, I chance to raise my kid, so I begged and Jack say that I was right, Dawn shouldn’t have to grow up without a father.” He said as he stood and kicked over a book shelf. “But I come back and she’s better off now then she ever was with me!”
Sam sighed. "That's not true. You were an amazing father to her! You took a scared broken little girl and made her feel safe. You showed her how to trust people and how to have fun. You taught her to be brave and smart. Your still her favorite person in the workd. She still asks about you, she still loves. "
“If that is true then why is she still so mad at me! She acted like I wasn’t even here Sam! Like I never even existed!” He said and looked at his little brother. “Maybe it’s best she lives with you...she actually...well she can actually have a good life and I’ll fine someway to die again...hope Jack lets me back into heaven.” He sighed.
"dean imagine if you were in her toes! She loved you and trusted you then you turned her away when she came to say good bye she's hurt. That doesn't mean she doesn't love you." He put a hand in his shoulder. "Dean, she can have a better life with the two of us."
“I was just so mad! I didn’t know what to do! I don’t know how to fix this! I’m sure she still doesn’t even know if I’m real or not!” He frowned. “She’s been going crazy or something!” He sighed sadly and held her arms.

Dawn frowned and closed her eyes trying to block him out. “You’re not real! Uncle Sammy told me to stop talking to things that aren’t real!” She frowned and tried to do her work as best she could hearing the door click open and looking up to see Sam. The child jumping up and running to him. “Uncle Sammy I need help again!” She whimpered in his shirt.
After Dawn said what she did Dean figured he would need help to prove to her that he was real. He went around the house looking for someone to help him, but most of the house was empty.
Sam had come downstairs to check up on dawn. Dean didn’t notice as he was searching in another room . When Sam saw Dawn running to him his expression filled with concern and worry. He picked her up and hugged her tight. “I’m here, Dawn. It’s okay I’m here.” He then carresed her hair trying to sooth her. “What wrong? What happened?”

“I keep seeing…daddy! He keeps talking to me mad I can’t make him stop!” She frowned and hugged the man as tightly as she could hiccuping and sniffling. “I’m trying really hard uncle Sammy! I’m trying really really hard!” She sobbed out weakly into his clothes. She wanted to be normal, and wanted so badly to have him know she was trying.
He rocked her in his arms, swaying side to side as he held her close. “Your trying that’s all I wanted from you.” he said with a smile. “I’m proud of you regardless cause you been doing so well so far. This is just a little set back and it’s okay. Just keep ignoring it and talking to me about it when you see him. He will go away as long as you do that. Hey why don’t you and me get out of here and get some lunch?”
She sniffled and nodded. “Yeah…I’m going to get my shoes.” She said softly and walked into her room. She frowned seeing Dean holding her ladybug and frowned. “UNCLE SAMMY!” She screamed wanting him to come to that Dean would just vanish.
When Dean had gone up to her room, he felt a sense of sadness that he was never able to provide this “normal” life style for her or himslef. His brother was able to get a good job, buy a home and spoil his daugther as well as Deans. It made Dean question if Dwan would be better off without him. Here she could live a stable life...a avenrage life free of hunting. Dean knew if he took in Dawn there lives would go back to how it was hunting and struggling. Dean had sat on Dawn`s bed and held her stuffed ladybug as his thoughts raced.
When he saw her enter he smiled. he really had missed her.
Dean held his hands to his ears as she began to scream for Sam. “Dawn stop screaming!” he ordered. “I swear im real. I`m not a ghost or an illusion or whatever you think i am! I`m here!”
He put his hands on his shoulders. “Please Dawn give me a chance. I`m so sorry and I just want to be your dad again.”
Dawn frowned and looked at him. Her lower lip shaking as tears ran down her face. “No...” she said and fell to her knees crying and trying to take her aggression, stress, and fear out. “I know you’re fake!” She said hitting his chest with her small fists. “The fake ones say they love me! The fake ones wanted to come back!” She hiccuped still hitting his chest even if she wasn’t doing any damage. “You aren’t real or you would tell me how I ruined your perfect heaven!” She finally gave in feel tired as she whimpered. “I ruined everything, I can look at your life and know it, so when you say you miss me I know your fake.”
Tears poured down deans cheeks. He fell to his knees in agony. All he wanted was her forgiveness. He felt so bad about how he spoke to her that he felt he needed to set things straight and to be her dad. He knew how much she loved him, how much she needed him.... But in that moment, back in heavan, all he could think of was himslef. "I didn't mean what I said back then. Can't you understand? Sometimes people say things they don't mean when they are angry or hurt. I was angry and confused.... I know my place and my purpose it's to help you. When people have kids they have to put their kids first."
Sam enters the room standing in the door way. "Dean?" Sam spoke his jaw dropped. He grabbed Dawn and held her then stepped back. "No, you can't be! What are you?"
“Not when my whole life mommy said stuff like that and she would mean it!” She sobbed before being picked up and crying into Sam.
“Sammy, it’s me...it’s really me! I’m back!” He smiled and walked to him.
“Come on you gotta know it’s really me, I realized how, awful I was to dawn when she saw me if heaven...I didn’t have the right to say that to her.” He said softly and then took a deep breath. “It’s hard to believe but really Sammy, it’s me!”

mmc: @idjit & @woefulcas asked: demon!dean or michael!dean?
“Open your eyes, Dean.
Let’s go take a howl at that moon.”
Dean pokes his head in. “Hey, Sam’s got a pretty bad cold. Do you wanna make a card for him? We can take it to him with his soup.”
Dawn looked up from her drawing and smiled with a nod. “Yeah! Okay! Is he gonna be okay?” She asked softly as she went to her some construction paper from her draws.

Hearing the door to the bunker open Dawn looked up with a smile. “Daddy!” She said without looking excited to show her drawing to him.
The child gave a weak smile and looked to her uncle and then hugged him tightly and tried to keep her tears from falling once again. “I’m lucky to have you here uncle Sammy!” She smiled and nuzzled under his chin. As the night dragged on Dawn would occasionally wonder off and stare into space talking to nothing with the hallucinations of her father. That night she looked up at Sam and gently took hold of his hand. “I love you uncle Sammy.” She said softly.
He smiled at the child and kissed her cheek. "Im lucky to have you, now we get to know each other better than before." He told her. "And I will be here for you no matter what happens." He assured her again.
Later in the night, he carried dawn into a room that she shared with Ellie. On the pillow sat dawns stuffed toy AC and a lady bug bedspread. There was new toys in the closet, also a combination of old and new clothes.
When Dean had first died, sam purchased a house because it was too hard for him to remain in the bunker.
"I love you too dawn." He spoke tucking her in. "Do you want to hear a story?"
She smiled weakly and looked up at him. “Can you tell me a story about daddy when he was little?” She asked softly as she curled around her ladybug and gently pet the sheets. “I miss him, uncle Sammy...what if I forget him?” She asked worriedly as she curled up in a ball to try and keep from crying again. “I’m sorry.” She mumbled out not knowing what to say for letting the tears run down her face.
Sam sat on the bed with her and wrappdd his arms around her. "You wont." He told her as a smooth her hair. " Dean was your age when our mom died, and he used to talk about her all the time. He remembered her so vividly and he loved her so much still with every passing day. Plus how could you forget someone as awesome and unique as dean. You don't forget peoole like him and I won't let you. To forget him, that would be a tragedy in its own." He kissed her head and sat back trying to think of a child friendly story about Dean. "Well in grade school I used to get picked on alot. The bullies would try to beat me up or pull pranks on me. I would go home in tears and tell Dean everything that happened, the next day he would go to my school and scare the shit out of the bullies. A few times he even beat up some of them. He told them if anyone messes with his brother they will be answering to him. He also taught me how to fight for myslef but I was too chicken to fight back then. I didn't wanna hurt anyone."
Dawn smiled up and nodded. She calmed down as the story was told to her and her eyes grew heavy. “Daddy was so brave.” She smiled as her eyes grew heavy. “One day...I’m gonna be just like him.” She said happily as she slowly closed her eyes and fell asleep on her uncle her ladybug in a death grip in her arms.
Sam kissed her on the head. Then tucked her in. He honestly liked having a little kid to take care of and especially now that he could put all his time into it. Ella was 15 so she was far from grown, yet her life so far has been very similar to his own. She grew up going on hunts, be dragged across country and shuffled from school to school.
He looked from ella to dawn and only wanted to give them normalcy. He wanted to give them the best education and provide them a happy normal life. He wanted them to grow up in one town, have life long friends, go to college, get successful job.
He walked to the door and turned out the light.
He went into his bedroom down the hall. It felt so strange to be living in an acutal house instead of the bunker. But when Dean died he couldn't stand to live there anymore, too many memories. So he moved the girls to a small town in Texas, in a two bedroom house. Sam took a job in town working full at a law firm as a legal consultant. He was also finishing his law degree schooling online.
Sam got dressed into his sleep clothes and then got a Red Bull out from the mini fridge in his room. He took a big gulp of his Red Bull then placed it on the bed table. He sat on the bed and opened his laptop and began to study for his final next week. Yet as he started studying his mind couldn't focus and he kept worrying about Dawn. Maybe she needs therapy or medication. Should I bring her to a doctor? Maybe she's just sad. Maybe I just need to push her more to talk to me about her feeling. Maybe I need to push her less and be more laid back. What if it's a monster? Or his ghost? What would Dean do? Why is she seeing him? How can I help her? Why can't I help her?
So far Sam hadnt put Dawn in school and had usually just had her come to work with him. He would have her read quietly or do educational games on her iPad as he worked. Usually he would help her out when she needed it. Then Ella would pick her up at 2 when her classes ended to bring her home. He hadn't felt that dawn was ready to go back to school. she was still so broke hearted about Dean and plus he was oberveing some odd behavior from her. He and Ella would constantly catch dawn talking to herself. Although dawn claimed she was seeing and talking to Dean.
(ik I added a lot of things we didn't discuss so if you wanted to change any of these things I said about Sam and dawn please let me know. Also would you perfer for me to run ideas by you first or just go for it. You just seem to always like my ideas so I figured it would be okay 😅🤣. )
Dawn woke up the next morning and looked up at her hallucination of her father starting to talk to him before looking up seeing Sam walk into her bedroom. “Morning uncle Sammy.” She said softly and smiled weakly at his suit. “You look nice.” She said softly as she got up dressing in her Jean and black tee making sure to slide her fathers oversized flannel on when she was done as she walked out not having it in her to sit to brush her hair or teeth as she walked to the kitchen. “why are you dressed real nice?” The child asked as she sat at the table pouting a bowl of chocolate cereal.
"Thanks, Dawn." He answered. "Why don't you get dressed and meet me down stairs for breakfast?"
Sam took some time to get dressed, whe got to the kicthen the girls were already eatting.
"I got work today, I have some big clients that I need to impress." Sam answered dawn.
"you would probally impress them more if you didn't have long hair like a surfer." Ella joked.
Sam rolled his eyes and ignored her for the moment. "Dawn, only gave the one meeting how about we do anything you like after "
Dawn smiled and nodded happily before having an idea. She jumped up and went to her room grabbing a hair tie and walked back out.
The child tying sams hair into a ponytail and then going back to her food not finishing as normal and going to her tablet to start her schooling Sam worked on with her.
Ella laughed. "that is definitely better, he looks like a fancy billionare." She hugged her cousin.
Sam got a phone call and went into the other room.
"dawn is everything okay? I hear you talking at night and sometimes I see you talking as if your dad was still here. I just want you to know I'm here for you and you can always talk to me."
Dawn looked up from her work and then frowned. “I see him sometimes...he’s here and I know it...” she said sadly. “I talk to him...I’m talking to daddy.” She explained sadly. “Me and him against the world.” She said softly before going back to her work.
“Can you come help me?” She asked weakly.
"dawn, I know you miss dean but he isn't here. You saw him in heaven and you heard back he isn't bringing anyone back. Dean used to love to hug and kiss you does the dean you see do any of that? And if it really is Dean why would he have reached out to sam too or even me? " She goes over to her and looks over her shoulder at the work she needed help with.
“I think...it’s just...” the ccold paused feeling tears coming back into her eyes. “I don’t want to talk about this anymore.”
She said as she got up and walked to the couch taking a seat as she kept doing her work not nothing to ask for help again. “I hate this!” She mumbled hardly able to be heard as she worked.
Sam came back from his call as dawn got up and left the room visable upset.
"Ella what did you say to her?" Sam grumbled.
"I just asked her about the dean thing?"
"ella I told you her pediatrician said I had to ease into it!" Sam told her. "The doctor said if you just jump into it she could feel like your attacking her or her belief. Ellie, I had a plan! That's why I was going to take her out today."
"I was just trying to help, dad." Ella mumbled.
Sam rushed into the other room and sat next to dawn. "Dawnie, I'm sorry ella upset you."
Dawn laid in her bed her face buried in her pillow as she sniffled and tried to hide from same when he walked in the room to make sure she was okay. “I don’t...I don’t want to talk about it!” She whimpered and held her ladybug close.
“You and Elle thing I’m crazy.” She said sadly and wiped her tears off her face as she sniffled and pulled her legs up to her chest.
"we don't think your crazy, we are just concerned." Sam told her. "I have seen things that aren't there. It happened years ago where I was seeing Lucifer. I tried to hide it and it just got worse but once....once I let Dean and Bobby help me things got better. If anything happened to you, I wouldn't be able to live with myslef. That's why I'm bugging you about it..I want the best for you, I want you to grow up well. "
“But, uncle Sammy he’s here! He’s talking to me and I know it! I’m not seeing things.” She sniffled. “I just miss daddy so much and I’m happy when I see him, because what if it’s really him?!”
She asked in a panic. “I miss him uncle Sammy!” She said sadly. “I love you, but...I miss him and if he is here...why is it bad If I’m talking to him.” She asked sadly and lowered her head.
Sam sighed. She was so headstrong like any winchester. "I know there is a possabily, so let's think this through logically. Has Dean been able to hold you or touch you. Have you asked why your the only one who can see him?"
“Because my powers or...maybe I’m am crazy...” she said sadly and looked down. “Maybe I should go to that doctor Dr. Lucy was tell you about.” She said sadly as she lowered her head.
Sam considered the idea. But he felt if he sent her there it would only confirm in her head that he thinks she is crazy. All he really wanted was for her to be safe and happy. "I don't want to have to have you talk to therapist. I think this can be solved if you can learn to seperate reality from illusion. Dean is gone, I know it hurts but it's true and he is not coming back. But that doesn't mean they he didn't love you or thst the memories weren't special. Do you think you could understand that?"
She paused and lowered her head. “Yeah...I think I can...” she said softly and pulled her legs up and whimpered. “I think I just don’t want to do school today is that okay if I just stay in my room while Ella is at school and you’re at work?” She asked sadly.
Sam paused, "I well....I don't want you to be alone....how about you and me play hooky. You can stay home today and I will work on my office okay? I will invite the clients to the house."
A few hours past and the real Dean decides to come back to Earth. Dean had realized back in heaven that he had been to hard on his daugther and he realized it was wrong of him to abandon her when she needed him. Dawn had been seeing illusions of him, but now Dean was back for real. Dean had hacked into the DMV records and found sam's license with his new address.
He walked up the walk way impressed by the picture perfect home sam had earned. He made note and smiled as he saw devil traps and angel wardings hidden behind the bushes, just incase. He then banged on the door and rang the bell a few times. "Sammy! Sammy!?" He shouted. When no one answered, Dean picked the lock and broke. As he walked in he noticed a bunch of toys on the floor and cartoons on the tv. On the left wall was two large book cases, on the opposite side was photo. Many old photos of Dean and sam. Some with their mom, dad or friend. Then there were picture of sam, Ellie and dawn. A few photos featured the three at fun places like the zoo or theme parks, that made Dean smile. The coffee table was filled with textbooks and legal files. "Sammy?! Dawn? Ellie? Where is everyone?!" He made his way down the hall and saw a room for Ellie and a room for dawn. He knew his brother would take care of dawn. "Dawn!? Sammy!?" Dean shouted. "Come guys I'm back!"
Dawn smiled and nodded as she started to play. Amy coming down from her room hearing the racket at the door but seeing Dean she took a deep breath deciding it was best to do what she promised Sam she would. “It’s not real.” She breathed out and went to the fridge using a chair to grab a soda that Sam kept out of reach of her and going to sit at the kitchen table to drink it.
Dean found it strange that no one seemed to be home, he turned on the TV and sat down on the couch. He turned the news than realized it was a weekday. He sighed thinking they all just be at work or school. He ventured into the kicthen for a snack then saw Dawn there. "Hey my girl! Dawn, before you say anything I'm so so sorry for what I said to you. Dawn I was a an ass and I shouldn't have been so mean. But I came here for you to be your dad again."
Dawn frowned and crushed her soda can whimpering as she tried to calm down. She promised Sam she would stop talking to the voice in her head. “It’s not real...” she breathed out and walked past Dean to grab a snack before going back to the class she had on her tablet.
(damn so many feels!!!)
"come on dawn don't be like that." He said following her around. " I know your mad and that I hurt you, but can't we just start over? I have missed you so much these past few months. I have missed seeing you grow up and play....can't we at least talk it out? Be mad if you want...yell at me...curse me out if you want...punch me...I deserve it. Don't act as if I'm not here, please I came back for you."
Dean didn't notice as he was searching in another room . When Sam saw Dawn running to him his expression filled with concern and worry. He picked her up and hugged her tight. "I'm here, Dawn. It's okay I'm here." He then carresed her hair trying to sooth her. "What wrong? What happened?"
“I keep seeing...daddy!

Dawn sat at the table while Dean cooked. “Daddy I know you don’t believe he’s real, but maybe we can leave some cookies and milk out for Santa? Maybe he is real and you just didn’t get to stay long enough for him to leave gifts.” Dawn explained softly as she colored in her coloring book.
"dawn we been over this, if this big fat guy existed I would know. Me and Sam have encountered every monster and creature out there if he were out there we would know. You can leave out cookies if want but me and Sam are just going eat them as soon as you go to bed, that's how it works."
She frowned and lowered her head. “Okay...” she said getting up and going to her room looking out her window at the Christmas lights everyone else had put up as she pouted wanting to know that someone with a good amazing magic like that was real.
Sam sighed and looked at his brother with a frown. “I know you just left the hunting game 3 months ago, and why don’t you try and just give her the idea of something like that being real?” He asked his brother. “Besides she has a point...”
"Come on sammy! She has no point." He argued. "The whole myth makes no sense a big old guy who doesnt age brings alll the kids of the world presents in only one night. Plus what's the point in having her believe in fairy tales like that? What is it going to do for her? It won't teach her about life or anything the whole idea is stupid. Dad never let us believe in silly stuff like that and look how well we turned out."
Sam frowned and put a plate of milk and cookies out. “Yeah, look how well.” He said sadly as he went up to his room to sleep for the night. Dawn woke in the middle of the night to the loud sound of a train whistle as she jumped and looked around. The girl got up quickly putting on her jacket and running out into the snow. She looked in awe as the steam started to settle and gasped seeing the massive train her awe making her almost not see the conductor coming off and not until she could hear him say her name did she turn to see him.
Dean heard the train whistle too and practially jumped out of bed as he heard it. He ran to the window and saw his daugther approuching the train. What the hell? He grabbed his jacket and ran out into the snow that resided outside the bunker. "DAWN! GET BACK IN HERE NOW!" You know better then to
Dawn hadn’t even listened as she climbed up in the train and looked around in awe as she went to find her seat. The child hadn’t even seen her father as she was asked for her ticket and began to search looking in awe when she pulled a golden ticket from her nightgown pocket. “Wow...”
Okay this has to be a dream. There is no freaking way a full on train can drive through snow, without any tracks. Let alone creepy know my daugther. He ran into the train and then went searching for dawn. "Dawn? Dawn?!" Dean shouted, going up the aisles, noticing all kids and not one parent. This is definitely a bad sign. What if someone is trying to traffic all these kids? he looked over and noticed the conducter clipping tickets. I can take that pedo, easy. Well I guess dawn isn't the only kid who I will saving today.
"Do you have a ticket, sir?" The conductor asked him from behind. Dean turned and rolled his eyes.
"no I don't have a ticket, but I'm not staying. You lured in my daugther and I'm taking her home." Dean answered. "By the way after I find my kid, I have a few choice word for you-"
"Check your pocket."
"I told you I'm not staying. Did you even what I said? I'm on to you! Human trafficking is illegal and especially of little kids!"
"Enough sir! Just let me see your ticket and sit down. we are already behind schedule."
"look it's cold, it's Christmas and I just want o get my kid and go to-" he slowly put his hand into his pocket and pulled out a golden ticket. "Wow..." He read the ticket. "The Polar Express? No way like that movie! Your the guy!"
The man looked at him in confusion. “I’m sorry movie?” He asked punching the ticket and letting him sit down next to Dawn who looked up at her father in awe. “Daddy!” She gasped and hugged him. “We’re going to the North Pole! Even if Santa isn’t real won’t it be cool to go?!” She asked with excitement. The man then walked around to punch the other kids tickets while Dawn looked in awe.
"Yeah the movie it's on every year a million times." Dean explained to the conductor. "The train guy looked just like you too."
As dean walked to his seat with dawn he noticed the train was almost identical to the one from the movie. Dean had decided that this was most certainly a dream and that non of this was acutally happening. I mean it makes sense he had probally watched that movie with dawn a dozen times this year, plus Christmas Eve is the perfect time for a Christmas dream. He figured it was best to just go with it and have fun.
He smiled and picked up Dawn and sat her on his lap. He kissed her cheek as he held her close to him. "It would be cool! Let's do this, it will be fun."
Dawn looked in awe from her window and laughed. “Isn’t that beautiful?” She asked with a smile as she looked up when the man asked if anyone needed refreshments and her and almost every other child on the train raised their hands and cheered. The seats turned and tables appeared as Dawn looked in awe. “Wow!” She gasped and smiled. “Good magic!” She smiled.
He looks out the window seeing the snow fall and the animals running around. The trees covered and train moving without a track. He kissed her head. "It is beautiful, just like my girl."
He hugged her as he watched the grown men come out along with conductor whom all began to dance and sing while passing out the hot chocolate. "Oh well I would tip them but I didn't bring any money." Dean remarked, thinking himself funny. "Didn't know we would be getting a show."
Dawn laughed and hugged him. She then looked in awe at the dancing and laughed. “It’s magic daddy not a show!” She smiled finishing her cup and then looking at him. “We’re going to meet santa.” She smiled pulling her ticket out that had a G.O punched into it. “This is going to be fun!” She smiled.
Dean scoffed. "Oh yeah santa...should be nice to meet the guy." He replied a bit dully. "Hey Deb what did you want the most for Christmas? If you could have anything in the whole world?"
The child smiled at the snow before feeling it falter at dean’s disbelief. Dawn then frowned starting to think. It wasn’t a thing, it wasn’t a place, it was just him to be happy and have a good Christmas, one where he could believe. “It’s special...” she said softly.
