I got reminded that I have this in my drafts, and it's been growing on my brain like mold the whole day.
So I guess I'm posting it after all. It's a short thing for the superpowers au, enjoy.
Neil has a system. It's a working, reliable system. He gets to a town, goes to a hospital. Finds someone in a coma or dying or something. He takes their place, and they have a "miraculous recovery". It's great, he doesn't even need to make fake IDs and stuff. Sometimes, the person he pretends to be has family and friends. Then, he just fakes amnesia. It's a perfect way out of the fact that he doesn't know anything about these people (or "himself" for that matter). After a couple of months of living as that person, he has a "tragic accident" and moves on. Never staying too long, never getting attached. He's not stupid enough to think that his father won't find him just because he looks different.
He is however, stupid enough to keep coming back to That Town. No matter where he goes, he always comes back to That Town eventually.
Just like now. It's almost midnight, and he's walking down the familiar road, to the same motel he knows so well.
But before he can get there, a red blur passes by him, bringing him out of his thoughts. He hears tires screeching, then a crash.
It's a sports car, he doesn't know what type, but it looks expensive. As much as a wreck wrapped around the tree can look expensive.
The driver (a young blond woman from what he can see) is... well, she's dead. Her neck is broken, so are most of her limbs. The sight doesn't faze him, he's seen worse.
It probably doesn't speak good of his mental health but his first thought is 'I guess I won't have to go to the hospital this time'.
Because it's too good of a chance to pass up.
So, he does what he always does. He drags her body out, changes his body to mirror hers (along with some of her injuries. It's not exactly a painless process). Then he gets in her place in the car, and waits for the ambulance.
._._.
A month later, his "family" decided it's time he comes back to school. He's out of hospital and almost entirely healed. According to the doctors ofcourse, he could fix his body in seconds if he wanted to.
He's also apparently a blond cheerleader named Brittany, has a boyfriend who plays football and is about to be a prom queen or something.
At least that's what his "bestie" Jessica tells him when she finds out about the "amnesia".
He cringes even thinking about it.
This is going to be a long year.
._._.
Andrew was bored out of his mind. The classes haven't even started, and he's already done with this shit.
He's sitting in his usual spot, trying to ignore all the noise and thoughts around him. He just wants to read his book in peace.
All the idiots in his class are preoccupied with the Return of the Cheerleader. Apparently some chick (Brittany, according to the thoughts of the girl in front of him) got a new car for her birthday and immediately decided to crash it, ending up in a hospital for a month. Today is her first day back, so everybody tries to reintroduce themselves to her. Because apparently the accident wiped her memory or something.
He really didn't need to know all this, but people around him keep thinking about it and his stupid brain refuses to forget it.
The cheerleader in question is currently in front of the class, talking to her friends and boyfriend, who is desperately trying to get her to come over to his place tonight. Andrew tries to tune them out, but still catches a tail end of whatever the guy was saying
"c'mon babe, it's gonna be just you and me, what else would you need?"
And while the girl smiles at him sweetly, Andrew is the only one who hears her think
'a knife in your stomach and no witnesses'
And that's...
That's not Brittany. That's Him. The Voice. The one he hears once every few months, on the street, in the mall, in the library. The one that confuses him so much. Because it never comes from the same person. They always look different, behave different, have nothing in common with each other. Except for the Voice. And Andrew just knows, that somehow they're all the same person. Somehow they're all Him. The Voice.
The Voice who is now apparently attending his school disguised as a cheerleader.
He's not bored anymore.
This is going to be an interesting year.
