Friend of the broken, the lost and outcast

Light our paths with the bright glow of your torches, fill our souls with the warmth of your sacred fire,

Light bringer

Mother of Witches, stern and Kind, nurture your children, help us grow into wisdom and power, so that we may carry out your will.

Lend us your voice so that we may speak up for those who cannot,

Lift your shadowy veil, lady of prophecy, and let us peek into the liminal.

Mistress of Magic, bathed in the silver light of Selene,

Bless our rites so that we can protect those who cannot protect themselves and serve justice in your name when those in power are too weak-willed to carry out their duties, corrupted by greed and arrogance.

Hekatean Home Protection

The Goddess Hekate’s most popular ancient role was likely that of a protector. She was called on as Hekate Apotropaia (or Apotropaios), an averter of evil, and Hekate Propylaia, Hekate before the gate, as a protector of thresholds. This post is a list of things a Hekate devotee or Hellenic polytheist can do to ask Hekate to protect their home.

The first is the most traditional method, which would be to set up a Hekataion, or a threshold shrine to Hekate. These were present throughout Ancient Greece and were thought to win the goddess’ favor and help protect the home. Constructing one of these can be simple or elaborate depending on preference and means. They can range from an image of Hekate placed outside the door or just inside the home by the door, or a full shrine to Hekate. It can be whatever suits your worship, but what’s important is to leave offerings to Her and give Her prayers there asking Her to protect the home. One thing to do is to always have a candle lit on the shrine (safely, of course) so a torch of sorts always defends your threshold.

Another thing one can do is craft a charm or talisman by asking Hekate to imbue an object with the power of protection. To do this, find a piece of jewelry, a key, or even an animal talisman made of bones of Her sacred animals, and anoint it with a Hekate oil. Leave an offering of incense for Hekate and then say:

“Goddess Hekate, She who guards the doorway, I call upon your aid. Averter of evil, bless this talisman so that it defends my threshold and shields me and mine from all harm. She who stands before, in between, and within, lend to this charm your powers of protection.”

A third method to call on Hekate to protect the home is to make a powder to sprinkle across thresholds. I mix poppy to confuse enemies, garlic for protection, and common sage (not the white kind) for health and good fortune. To this you could also add crossroad dirt or brick dust. Burn some of the powder as an offering to Hekate on a charcoal disk and ask Her to bless it:

“Goddess Hekate, I call upon you as I burn this offering for you. I ask you to bless these herbs from your sacred garden and lend to them your powers of protection. As I burn a portion of this powder for you, please grant to me your favor and imbue this it with the strength to shield my home.”

Lighting a candle dressed in an aromatic or Hekate oil before the threshold can also serve as a means to protect the home. Sprinkling some of Hekate’s sacred herbs onto the candle can add some extra power to it. Light the candle and say:

“Goddess Hekate, Bright One, I light this flame in your honor. Just as this candle burns bright, so may your torches never be extinguished and guide us. Please look upon the home of your devoted follower with favor and protect it from all harm and misfortune”

Once the candle burns completely, save any wax remnants and place them in a small charm bag. This can either be buried on your property (preferably by its entrance) or hung above or by the door.

The final, simplest thing to do is to give Hekate offerings in coincidence with this prayer:

“Hekate Propylaia, She who stands before the threshold, I place these offerings before you and ask for your blessing. Please guard my home and all that reside in it. May all things dangerous and harmful be denied entry, and may your blessings take their place. May these doors be always protected by you, and may they never cease to shield us from all that is evil in the world. Great Hekate, averter of misfortune, look upon your devoted follower with favor and grant me safe shelter.”

Using one or all of these as a way to protect your home should put up a significant barrier between you and anything that might do you or your home any damage. These can be repeated as regularly as desired, and it’s probably wise to fortify them and redo them at least once a year, if not more often.

The hekataion is a small household shrine to the goddess Hekate. It was situated near the entryway to the home, and offerings were given to it in order to gain Her favor. The aspect of Hekate worshipped here was not the Hekate who was the fearsome goddess of witches, but a protector goddess, of the home and of children. Offerings given to Her here were aimed at guaranteeing the home’s protection from harm and ghosts. These shrines were incredibly common, especially in Athens, and ranged significantly in size and material. The Hekate shown here was usually Her triplicate form who could protect from danger in each direction (hence why these shrines were also found at the crossroads).

“Clean My Senses” Hekatean symbol

I received this symbol a few months ago in meditation with Hekate, but it was only during the Night of Hekate ritual (November 16, 2019) that I received it again and understood its meaning. This symbol can be used by Hekate’s devotees. It aims to eliminate blockages in your third eye that prevent you from clearly receiving the messages Hekate sends you. It can also be used to connect with your true self, especially for shadow work with Hekate. . The key in the center represents your true self. The surrounding flame represents Hekate’s torches guiding you, before the gate and on your personal path. The eye represents the opening of your third eye and connects with the middle world. The inverted triangle, besides representing Hekate’s number (3), is the connection with your shadow self and the underworld. The crescent represents your higher self and the upper world. Finally, the serpent is one of Hekate’s animals and here it represents the cleansing of all your chakras, starting from the root chakra up to the crown chakra. . This digital version was made by me. Hekate’s Ritual of Purification in February

In some magickal traditions, February is considered a propitious month for purification. Today, meditating with Hekate, she sent me a ritual to be done this month for 13 days in a row, starting at the full moon (so from 9th to the 21st of February). It can also be done for 3 or 9 days. If you are going to do it, adapt it to your case and choose the number of days according to your availability.

Preparation: During this period, the recommendation that Hekate told me is that in addition to the daily rituals, you should drink plenty of water, eat as natural as possible (with lots of fruits and vegetables) and practice physical activity, preferably that includes contact with nature. Also that you can have at least a bath with purifying herbs of your choice (I suggest the same ones from the incense below). Altar: You can set up a simple or elaborate altar to Hekate, as suggested below (if you cannot set up an altar, just do the visualization, which I describe in the end): Simplified altar: 1 white or black candle; 1 glass of drinking water; 1 stick incense from some herb linked to purification (suggestions: rosemary, lavender, sage, rue or basil); 3 cloves of garlic (offering to Hekate). . Elaborated altar: 3 candles (1 white, 1 black and 1 red); purifying incense (1 part of each herb: rosemary, lavender and bay laurel. It can also be substituted by rue, basil or sage, as long as there are 3 herbs in total); 1 cup of drinking water; 3 heads of garlic (offering to Hekate); Hekate representation (statue or drawing/image).

Ritual: Assemble the altar intuitively. One suggestion is to follow the photo I posted. When you’re ready, say: “Hail, Hekate! I invite you to this ritual that begins now, in your aspect as a goddess of purification”. If you only have one candle, light it now. If you have 3 candles, light them when evoking each epithet: (Light the white candle) “Hekate Drakaina, Serpent-Dragon! Help me to release what no longer serves me, like a serpent that sheds its skin, I leave the past behind”. (Light the red candle) “Hekate Alexeatis, Averter of Evil! Help me clean up everything that doesn’t add to me. Take away negative spirits and energies around me and in my home ”. (Light the black candle) “Hekate Borborophorba, Eater of Filth! Take everything that pollutes my being to the depths of the earth, whether it be in my physical, mental, emotional or spiritual body”. Look at the candle flame and say: “May the fire of Hekate purify my actions!” . Lift the bowl/glass of water in front of the altar, saying: “Beloved goddess Hekate, I ask you to place your blessings of purification in this water. May your water purify my emotions!” Close your eyes and feel Hekate sending her blessings to the water. When you feel that it is finished, drink it visualizing that the water radiates a bright light, cleaning you from head to toe. Light the incense, saying: “Hekate, I ask you to place your purification blessings on this incense. May your smoke purify my thoughts!” Pass the smoke around you (being careful not to burn yourself), visualizing the smoke purifying your aura and negative thoughts. Visualize what is being eliminated by returning to earth. Stay a few more moments with Hekate, feeling her energy and listening to her messages, in case she sends it. You can finish now or continue with the visualization below. If finishing, thank Hekate and blow out the candle(s).

Visualization: If you choose to do the visualization, read the script below before you start, to help guide you through it: Sit comfortably, close your eyes, take three deep breaths, feel your body relaxing more and more. Visualize that you are on a deserted beach, where you can enjoy the meeting of the three domains of Hekate: land, sea, and sky. You feel a breeze, look to the side and see Hekate coming towards you. She takes your hand and leads you to the entrance to a cave (earth) behind the beach. Inside the cave, she lights your way with her torches. You walk until you reach the heart of the cave, and Hekate lights a bonfire (fire) right in the center. You see that there is a small altar made of stone beside the bonfire, with a saucer with incense (air) and a bowl with pure water (water). Hekate takes the saucer with incense and begins to pass the smoke around you. Then she takes the bowl of water and spills it on your head. Finally, she asks you to enter the bonfire, without fear, to complete your purification with her fires. Throughout this process, pay attention to what she says to you, or whether she remains silent. When you feel like you’re done, thank Hekate and head back to the beach. Return from the visualization first by moving slowly, and then open your eyes. Thank Hekate and end the ritual by blowing out the candle(s). Repeat the same process the next day, until you complete 3, 9, or 13 days, according to what you set out to accomplish.

Hekatean Deipnon Bread

A simple, flavourful and very magical recipe for charmed bread to be used as an offering for Hekate’s Deipnon or other Hekatean rites and workings. Make sure to knead with intent!

Ingredients:

o 500g of bread flour

o 300ml lukewarm water

o One sachet of yeast (growth, abundance, expansion, re-animation, enhancement of magic properties and divine blessings)

o A tsp of honey (wealth, joy, fruits of labour, concentrated power)

o Two tsp of salt (purification, boosting potential)

o Oregano (For strength, vitality, growth)

o Garlic powder (healing, protection, banishing negative energy, chthonic)

o Basil (good fortune, luck, prosperity)

o Pinch of black pepper (protection)

o A few strings of Saffron Crocus (A favourite of Hekate’s)

o 3 tbsp olive oil (divine connection)

Directions:

I. Mix the water, honey and yeast and set aside to bloom. You can charge the yeast to awaken it. We feed it with the honey, so that the results of hard work will pass on to motivate the magic into growing in power, a self-enhancing cycle.

II. Mix the flour and dry ingredients. The flour is the base of Mother Earth’s nurture. The herbs are Hekate’s Pharmaka, who gave the knowledge to the First Witches and taught them how to use them to heal and harm, create and destroy, work their magic.

III. Dig a little well in the flour mix and add the yeast mix. Add the oil. Stir clockwise to incorporate and kneed for 10ish minutes. Chant and pray and charge the dough with your intent at this point.

IV. Place it in a well-oiled bowl. Cover with a tea towel or two and let rise for about an hour or in the fridge overnight a day early. The latter will make for a more complex flavour.

V. Knock the air out, knead for a couple minutes and put it in the baking pan you will use. Carve Hekatean symbols (I used the CoH sigil and the Greek name of the Goddess) and let rise for another hour.

VI. Bake for approx. 35 minutes in 200C (Fan). Put another baking tray with water in the oven for a crispy crust. Let cool a bit before the ritual.
