Who should I act like?
Before I was a Christian â before I decided to truly walk in the way of the Lord â I struggled deeply with my character, my reactions, and the way I responded to people and situations. And even after becoming a Christian, Iâve realized that some of those same struggles still try to rise up when life gets hard.
Iâve battled anger and a quick temper, lustful desires, cussing, judging others, attacking people because their opinions didnât match mine, sexual immorality, body image struggles, identity confusion, unintentionally seeking validation, and becoming emotionally overwhelmed.
Slowly, God has been showing me something important:
these things are not the character of Jesus.
Jesus did not respond the way my flesh often wanted to respond before my walk with Him.
So what are the characteristics of Jesus?
Jesus was compassionate, loving, kind, humble, bold in truth, patient, wise, and strong. He cared for people others ignored. He loved deeply while still standing firmly in righteousness. He lived completely without sin and came to show us how to live.
Scripture shows us His heart:
âWhen He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.â â Matthew 9:36
âA new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.â â John 13:34
âCome to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest⊠for I am gentle and humble in heart.â â Matthew 11:28â29
âThe Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.â â Mark 10:45
âHe humbled Himself by becoming obedient to deathâeven death on a cross.â â Philippians 2:8
âI am the way and the truth and the life.â â John 14:6
Jesus said, âGo, and from now on sin no more.â â John 8:11
âFather, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.â â Luke 23:34
âThe Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.â â Luke 19:10
âIt is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick⊠I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.â â Mark 2:17
âHe committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.â â 1 Peter 2:22
âFor we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses⊠yet He did not sin.â â Hebrews 4:15
âAll who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers.â â Luke 2:47
Jesus didnât just teach truth â He lived it.
And He gave us an example to follow.
âI have given you an example, that you should do as I have done for you.â â John 13:15
âWhoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.â â 1 John 2:6
âBe imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children.â â Ephesians 5:1
So be encouraged today: if you are struggling with old habits, old reactions, or parts of yourself that donât reflect Christ â you are not alone. Those things are not from the Lord, and He is patiently transforming us day by day.
Jesus is not only our Savior â He is our example.
And every day, through Him, we are learning how to become more like Him. đ€
