Hi! I just wanted to tell you that I love your work, and I've loved Robot and Monster since I was a kid! I'm a huge fan of robots, and to this day Robot's design is one of my all time favorites! Your designs inspire my art a lot! :D

Have you worked on any other Nickelodeon shows before? (genuinely curious cuz i grew up with Nickelodeon)
Oh yes, after R&M I did a stop-motion animated short series for DreamWorks TV - How to do everything with Garrick and Marvin, I art directed the first 2 seasons of Boss Baby Back in Business for Dreamworks TV most recently I just finished the Rugrats reboot, I production designed the new 3D look of the show- we finished that last year, during that time I even did some character design work on the new Fairly Odd Parents CG reboot. So yes many things going on since R&M and I'm not going to mention all of the shows I developed but didn't get picked up, and shows I pitched. A lot of animation stuff!
What inspired the idea of Bricklin being a blimp pirate?
I believe that was a collective idea with my partners Josh and Jenn and the writing team

Nope, we never had a chance to think about it. If we had done a full second season I'm sure we would have had story lines for many of our characters.
I've noticed that you create characters with less humanoid designs because you don't draw humans well.
But still, how much do you know about human anatomy?
I would love to see a drawing of a human body or a human face from you!

Josh Zinman's storyboards for the Blimp Pirates episode (at joshzinman dot com) seem to show a 3d model for the pirates' ship in some of them. This got me a bit curious.
I obviously assume you wouldn't have any of this, of course, but I was wondering if you at least know if other 3d stuff like character models (Bricklin, his henchmen) were already under development back then?
Also, were any of the voices recorded for that episode?
Or did that episode not make it anywhere near that far into the pipeline?
Hey there,
That episode got the furthest in the process since it was written first. That said we never got to the modeling stage, there may have been a basic model built for the board artist to save them drawing time, there was an animatic we had recorded all the voices except for Bricklen he hadn't been cast yet. I believe it got to 1st Animatic.
This Saturday, a bonus video a brief video tour of my Robot and Monster office in March of 2012! There will be plenty of places on the video you will want to pause and zoom in. I believe I saw an early render of the Blimp pirates ship hanging on the wall. And a scale model chart of all of the characters. check it out this Saturday.
Some bonus BTS about the title cards. I always love animated show title cards and wanted to have unique illustrations for every episode. As the episode was being finalized I would start by sketching out the idea then I would do a rough color. Our animation supervisor Martin Leeper would pose the character models and render them. Our amazing background artist Wesley "Lito" Paguio would then paint any characters or elements that were still needed and put the finishing polish on the whole thing. I would do the final lettering and then it would get added to the episode. Team work!
