Maladaptive daydreaming - my introduction
A while ago I watched a video and in the comment section I saw someone talk about maladaptive daydreaming. At first I had no idea what it was, but after reading the comments of others, I realised I had been doing that very thing ever since I can remember, especially in times of great stress. It was a way for me to cope with daily life, and it intensified when I got into puberty.
I’m 21 now and I still have days where hours pass but it feels like it’s been only 30 minutes. It’s very frustrating whenever I have assigments/tests to study for etc., but the world I’m in when I ‘daydream’ is too beautiful to leave. When I was younger, it saddened me knowing that this world wasn’t real, and even now I feel the same about it, but I’ve used the daydreams to kind of support myself in real life.
For example, whenever I have an assignment to do, I try to bring the work I need to do into my daydream, and try to make up an scenario where studying is a theme. I have to admit this is quite hard because the work keeps me out of the scenario, it reminds me of the fact that it’s not a part of the world I want to be in (I find it hard to explain this last part). Or I try to make up a scenario where the characters help me with the work I need to do, or say supportive things (this last ‘strategy’ helped me overcome a lot of pain and sadness :D)
I’ll try to make a section where I share some of my daydreams, feel free to leave a comment about your scenarios!
Writing this feels so liberating! I never actually spoke with others about this, apart from my mother, who understands and knows. She’s a very understanding and openminded person <3
For now I want to welcome you to my page, and thank you if you read all of this! I’ll have to apologize in advance in case of grammatical errors, English isn’t my first language, but I’ll try my best!
Love to you all!
