Do you have any recommendations for fics with good Buffy characterization? I'm finding lots of writers tend to flatten her or treat her as a reward for Spike/Faith rather than her own character (I've read everything from Summersfrost and chasingfictions, they're both brilliant)
hello!! thank u for asking, i love buffy and i love recommending fics so this is great! i don't know what you ship/if you ship her with anyone, so i'll include something for everyone and some fics rated gen as well!
summersfrost and @chasingfictions are always my first recs because they're just THAT GOOD. so now onto authors you may not know:
@babygirlgiles fic about buffy trying to find out who pays her cable bill in s6 is one of the best s6 fics i've ever read. it's gen and focused mostly on buffy and buffy and dawn, however everyone gets their moment and they're all so beautifully written. find it here: x
also his fic "humble abode" is about buffy and giles in s1, around 1x05 and it's literally so human and written with such love for the characters and the conditions they're in, i cried reading it. find it here: x
moving on to @dreadfulcalendarwoman - i love all of their fics and it's a bit hard to choose because of that but here are some of my favourites that focus on buffy: x x x x x
another writer i just LOVE is talesofstories, i've read every of their fics literally countless times so i'm gonna be shameless and tell u to read every of their fics they're SO good!! my favourites are compact, right next door to you and the slayer's guide to living series. chef's kiss. 5/5 stars.
@aliceinwondrbra writes AMAZING faith/buffy fics if you're into that. i really love x and x but i can really just recommend checking them out throughly!
some of my favourites:
faith/buffy, post chosen roadtrip fic x
faith/buffy, post chosen, rated e x
spike/buffy, s5 exploring the"graditude kiss" trope x
dawn & buffy, set in the summer between s1 and s2 x
cordelia/buffy, rivals to lovers au x
spike/buffy, buffy is an artist and spike commissions a life-size painting of him and they start dating x
you could also check out my bookmarks on ao3 over here for more recs!
i love when words fit right. seize was always supposed to be that word, and so was jester. tuesday isn't quite right but thursday should be thursday, that's a good word for it. daisy has the perfect shape to it, almost like you're laughing when you say it; and tulip is correct most of the time. while keynote is fun to say, it's super wrong - i think they have to change the label for that one. but fox is spot-on.
most words are just, like, good enough, even if what they are describing is lovely. the night sky is a fine term for it but it isn't perfect the way november is the correct term for that month.
it's not just in english because in spanish the phrase eso si que es is correct, it should be that. sometimes other languages are also better than the english words, like how blue is sloped too far downwards but azul is perfect and hangs in the air like glitter. while butterfly is sweet, i think probably papillion is more correct, although for some butterflies féileacán is much better. year is fine but bliain is better. sometimes multiple languages got it right though, like how jueves and Πέμπτη are also the right names for thursday. maybe we as a species are just really good at naming thursdays.
and if we were really bored and had a moment and a picnic to split we could all sit down for a moment and sort out all the words that exist and find all the perfect words in every language. i would show you that while i like the word tree (it makes you smile to say it), i think arbor is correct. you could teach me from your language what words fit the right way, and that would be very exciting (exciting is not correct, it's just fine).
i think probably this is what was happening at the tower of babel, before the languages all got shifted across the world and smudged by the hand of god. by the way, hand isn't quite right, but i do like that the word god is only 3 letters, and that it is shaped like it is reflecting into itself, and that it kind of makes your mouth move into an echoing chapel when you cluck it. but the word god could also fit really well with a coathanger, and i can't explain that. i think donut has (weirdly) the same shape as a toothbrush, but we really got bagel right and i am really grateful for that.
grateful is close, but not like thunder. hopefully one day i am going to figure out how to shape the way i love my friends into a little ceramic (ceramic is very good, almost perfect) pot and when they hold it they can feel the weight of my care for them. they can put a plant in there. maybe a daisy.
Jane Austen's Emma was such a formative book for me because the main female character spends the bulk of the novel being blatantly wrong and sometimes even hurtful, yet she is still consistently, unconditionally loved by almost everyone who knows her.
Even Knightley still wants to marry her and decides to propose before he knows she's repented and corrected her mistakes with Harriet. He's upset with her, yes, but he still loves and accepts her and wants her, flaws and all.
It was the first book I ever read where the heroine didn't have to be a paragon of virtue, or repent of her sins first, in order to be worthy of everyone's love. Emma does repent, yes, but all her friends and family still consider her worthy even before she repents.
That was so important to me, and it made me a lifelong fan of female characters being accepted for who they are, of female characters who are allowed to be hurtful sometimes, and deeply flawed, and still be considered worthy humans deserving of love.

he says i hate everyone except you and that is addictive and that is kind of romantic and beautiful because you're young and you're kind of a sarcastic asshole too and you don't like bad boys, per say, but you don't really like good ones either. and you like that you were the exception, it felt like winning.
except life is not a romance book, and he was kind of being honest. he doesn't learn to be nice to your friends. he only tolerates your family. you have to beg him to come with you to birthday parties, he complains the whole time. you want to go on a date but - people are often there, wherever you're going. he's just so angry. about everything, is the thing. in the romance book, doesn't he eventually soften? can't you teach him, through your own sense of whimsy and comfort?
at first - you know introverts often need smaller friend groups, and honestly, you're fine staying at home too. you like the small, tidy life you occupy. you're not going to punish him for his personality type.
except: he really does hate everyone but you. which means he doesn't get along with his therapist. which means he has no one to talk to except for you. which means you take care of him constantly, since he otherwise has no one. which means you sometimes have to apologize for him. which means he keeps you home from seeing your friends because he hates them. you're the single exception.
about a decade from this experience, you'll type into google: how to know if a relationship is codependent.
he wraps an arm around you. i hate everyone except you. these days, you're learning what he's actually confessing is i have very little practice being kind.

These Witches Don't Burn
The siblings to a martyr.
Lil thing the RTX epilogue clip made me think of:
We really don't talk enough about how much the remaining Schnee's lost when Atlas fell.
Weiss dies.
Jaques dies.
Their home falls.
Their house is destroyed.
Everything they ever owned is gone.
Winter betrays everything she ever had for the greater good, and for what? For the nation she proudly served to be destroyed and her sister to die?
For Winter to be too slow to save her sister, despite how much Weiss believed in her ever since they were children? For Winter to look back and see the portal closed, Jaune Arc dying despite Weiss dying believing he would live?
Whitley finally starts connecting with his sister, for what? For her to just die? For the last hug they ever shared to be one he was reluctant to partake in? For him to play a large part in the plan that would get his sister killed?
Willow stops drinking, and for what? Her home is destroyed, her father's memory and life's work to disappear within moments? The death of her daughter?
Their legacy is so much larger now than just the Schnees known for the family business. Their riches are gone, but even more is expected of them now.
The stain on their family name is dead, but so is the greatest person to ever wear their family Emblem.
Whitley and Winter are the grandchildren of a hero, the children of a villain, and the siblings of a martyr. Their the Winter Maiden and the boy who tried to save Mantle.
Weiss Schnee died, sword in hand, alongside her friends she would call family.
And her own family was left to grieve, without her by their sides.
I hate it when you’re reading smut and you can’t figure out what position they’re in.
sometimes it just ends up being something like

babe wake up they’re soulmates
(Original post here.)
No other Avatar will ever beat Kyoshi at romance dumbassery. I love her. Not Avatar “I fall on my face every time I see the girl I like” Roku, not Avatar “I'd rather kiss you than die that's a compliment right?” Aang, and not Avatar “I kinda dated my whole team and now I'm dating my ex's ex” Korra. No one. Kyoshi having her bi awakening and realizing she was in love with Rangi because she thought she looked beautiful under the moonlight while they were running from the fucking cops is unmatched.
I will fucking RIOT if we don’t get to see Winter reunite with Weiss; Qrow reunite with Ruby and Yang: Ren, Nora, and Oscar reunite with RWBY-J…..basically all the reunions that will give me serious feels if/when we get a volume 10.
oh I get it
how it started: how it’s going:
