kal’s powers are the last gift of his first home. kara’s powers are the first gift of her new one.
kryptonian powers, to clark, mark the difference between humans and kryptonians for the first chunk of his life, long before he ever begins to understand his home culture or meets others like him. he looks human, he’s treated as one. his powers are the only thing that sets him apart (culture too, but that’s something he won’t uncover for years.) so those powers become his only tangible connection to his people. he has never existed as a kryptonian without them. to him, they are something normal for kryptonians. it's what ties him to krypton, because they’re the one thing kryptonians have that humans don’t. at least as far as he understands. he doesn’t yet grasp that on krypton, his people didn’t have powers either.
kara, on the other hand, lived as a kryptonian without powers. earth is where she first experiences them when she was a teen, and because of that, they don’t feel inherent. they feel foreign. gaining those abilities is what makes it undeniable that she’s no longer home. because on krypton, she lived a life without powers.
clark's powers come from his kryptonian biology. kara's from earth’s yellow sun.
powers remind clark that he’s kryptonian. they also remind kara she'll never go home again.
(this, in a way, feels like a part two of this post.)
one reason i love superman is how he is very much a loner who keeps people at a distance (often to his own detriment), but he subverts all the typical gruff, rude antihero tropes people usually associate with that type of person. i think it’s fun (and relatable!) to see how being polite, upbeat, or folksy can still be a way to keep people at arm’s length or isolate yourself.
a great example i think of is that scene in the death of superman when lois points out she knows almost nothing about clark’s life growing up, and he just demurs with ‘aw shucks, you know my folks taught me better than to go on about myself’. classic farm boy charm that’s just dodging the question. lois sees right through it, of course (“lois, you know me better than anyone!” “then that’s a real shame.”) – but i just wish it was an aspect of his character that was better understood by people who paint him as just a boy scout.
anyway thanks for thinking about our blorbos together another year it’s been a pleasure and a horror
“bruce cant understand why clark with the powers of a god would live like a human” no you’re thinking of lex luthor i think
Bruce’s actual thought process:
1. Oh he has all the powers, wow
2. I mean yeah, if i had all those powers i would be doing the same thing, and im clearly the worst most selfish least disciplined person in the world so like, obviously someone like Kal-El would use his powers to help
2.5 clearly this is an expression of his grief and atonement at not being able to save his planet
3. It is weird that he chose Earth to help, i wonder how he picked a refugee planet is it based on looks? How similar our physiology is?
4. Would it be akward to ask if he has anatomical diagrams i want to know if his heart is near his liver
5. Spock <3
6. All those powers and fighting people with mind control abilities i should figure out how to stop him in emergencies it must be stressful for him
7. Did his planetary government choose earth and he’s the only one who made it? Is he the only one public? No probably not but i could check meteor patterns for the last five years anyways
8. Lex needs to stop, this is embarrassing, i poached his entire medical r&d team THREE times last quarter and he barely noticed. Get a body pillow like a normal person.
no listen listen come closer. Clarks entire job is interviewing people and following leads, LISTEN, no matter how flustered he is internally he is not wavering or stuttering or forgetting his questions he is meetings Brucie Wayne with the clearest blue eyes anyone had ever seen even if he’s blushing all the way down LISTEN TO ME the person getting flustered is Bruce ok get back here
[#dear everyone clark PRETENDS to be flustered #its part of his disguise and his journalistic method #people who don't see him as a threat reveal more information #clark kent interviewing bruce wayne is them playing 4d chess #least authentic conversation theyve ever had] tags by @rainmonarch
clark kent i love you
i love when people write superman being an alien just to screw with people. like yeah, there's some stuff he can't control. the indestructibility, his super hearing, there's some stuff out of his control.
but then he gets the chance to be a little shit and he relishes in it. letting people attack him just so they can see that their attacks won't do jack diddly shit. sending his opponents flying by merely flicking them. eating weird shit or somebody's weapon just because he can. it's the best thing and i don't think we get enough of that nowadays.
One of the most interesting things when getting into comics and reading the most popular arcs and stories first is that you’re always wondering “Why is batman acting like that” then you start getting into it more and discover sheer ATROCITIES and tragedies that have befell this man in the recent past that Do, in fact, Explain Why He’s Acting Like That.
Like yeah, a person who only read utrh will say batman was acting cold or whatever but there is an entire web of trails and tribulations happening in the background😭 It was set smack dab in the middle of a literal universe wide crisis, Bruce’s eldest has been suicidal for the past 6 months and his CITY JUST GOT WIPED OUT BY A NUCLEAR BOMB, hasn’t even been a year since Bruce’s friends betrayed him so badly that he created a whole system to monitor them cause they lost every shred of his trust, a system which was then taken over TO KILL EVERYONE. All the rogues and villains have formed their own fucking union in protest of what the Justice League did behind Bruce’s back. AND THEN the father of his youngest son Robin got killed in his own home by fucking CAPTAIN BOOMERANG out of all people.
Like yeah, NO WONDER HE’S NOT COMPLETELY THERE.
i know Bruce can do handstands and flips but the idea of Dick teaching him so much more…like when Bruce asked him if he’d teach him to walk on a tightrope…it’s so nice to think about.
Dick teaching him how to do tricks and flips and spins and springs that are all for show instead of combat, and cheering him on and being so excited every time Bruce does it exactly right.
Of all the weird contrivances that superhero media have by virtue of genre, I think the no-kill rule is one of the easiest to justify. "Why don't these paragons of virtue extrajudicially murder people?" fuck dude, I wonder.
that troupe where one character has a nightmare and the other one comes to make them feel Safe so they fall back asleep except it’s batman and robin and batman’s the one who’s plagued by the Horrors, and robin’s like “dude i’ll sit here and fight your demons for you don’t worry” and it’s stupid and shouldn’t work but Bruce falls back asleep on the sofa while Dick sits vigil perched on the armrest and what do you know, he actually gets a decent sleep for the rest of the night
(tags from here)
god, yeah. Dick is not prideful, he is satisfied. Bruce trusts him enough that he feels safe. He makes Bruce feel hopeful. His presence as Dick is just as important to Bruce as Robin’s is to Batman. That’s his partner and his best friend and the guy who looks out for him and has his back and that doesn’t stop when they take off the suits.
I have to upload this as a video bc you can see her think this in real time
OP you just can't leave out this golden comment
i think lois is the kinda gal to change her hairstyle every three months because she likes to keep things fresh <3 and is also banned from so many places that she has to revamp her look so security doesn’t immediately clock her
clark: lois :] you got a new haircut! short hair really suits you lois: thanks, clark! thought i’d change it up a little clark: yeah <3 also i don’t think luthor’s security will fall for it lois: what is it to you, kansas.
@slydiddledeedee replied: How unfair it is that Clark has a rock solid disguise of glasses and slouch and Lois can change her eye color hair color hair length and still Luthor corp will be like miss lane we do have to ask you to leave
lois will be trying to convince the security that it’s not her in the photo and the poor guy is just like “listen. it’s nothing personal, you know what mr luthor is like” and she immediately perks up with, “that’s so interesting. what IS mr luthor like…?” and the security guy is like “yuuup you’re ms lane. Get Out.”
hot take: I feel like dick Grayson would have a lot of complicated feelings and insecurities about SuperBat. Especially if he was a child.
Oh yeah for sure. I mean on the one hand Superbat skips past the requisite Dick Grayson Gauntlet that most of Bruce's other love interests have to face at some point because Dick already knows and trusts Clark as a very close friend, but on the other BECAUSE these are people he thinks of as his very best friends it would be like being excluded from things by your friend group because they're dating now and suddenly not being as important to your besties, especially if this was happening during World's Finest years. Even in more recent times, Dick was absolutely heartbroken just by the fact that Clark was going to be Bruce's best man at the Batcat wedding instead of him (in Prelude to the Wedding: Nightwing vs Hush) - it'd be that again but worse.
I just wanted to say thank you for being so normal about fictional characters. I've unfollowed so many people in the last three years because they think fictional people are real people, not just little toys that we smash together. So thank you for being normal about this.
I know that "normal about fictional characters" in this context means "doesn't think that writing about made up people having sex is particularly dangerous or harmful," but calling me of all people "normal about fictional characters" is still extremely funny. unrelated but did you guys know that if I type "jean paul valley" my phone automatically suggests "prostate" as the next word.
what's weird about that 🤔
nothing. he needs to be milked.
