How Merethe and meredith knew they were sisters?

They are twins and they grow up together. Merethe was the first in became a guardian and without her sister she got involved in many problems, in a Hunters/Eliskni alliance to be specific, she used to stay away from the tower/city for long periods without contact. Then, like 2-3 years later she came back to discover that her close friend Alex (a titan) found Meredith :D.
