Self-Portrait of the Artist (1872 / Detail) - Arnold Böcklin
The Okapi used to be known as the Atti locally, or the African Unicorn by Europeans. The ancient description of the animal was a mysterious mix between a donkey, zebra and giraffe. The creature was thought to be a story that Europeans didn’t believe at the time. In 1901, the Okapi was dubbed a real animal scientifically. The British governor of Uganda at the time, Sir Harry Johnston, sent a full pelt and skull to London, proving the this unicorn’s existence. They discovered that this species was closely related to an ancient giraffe species that was unearthed in 1838 in Greece.
The Okapi is often called one of the symbols of cryptozoology; it was a seemingly mystical animal that was proven by science to exist. It even used to be the symbol of the International Society of Cryptozoology which ended its run in 1998.
