some base canon things i have to put here

elena is in college and 21 by the time the show events start, and the accident happened the summer break following her freshman year. not sure what she's studying yet. maybe journalism??? but she's very lost, just coasting.

didn't move on campus, she still lives with her aunt judith and helps look after her younger sister, margaret, who is four-ish.

she has a deluded idea of her relationship with her mother since her death. grief has clouded that, and it was a more complex relationship than she'd like to remember. she instilled a lot of trauma on elena.

elena has ibs, anxiety, depression, ptsd and bipolar disorder. she also suffers from night terrors sometimes.

she is bisexual!!!! slight preference for men. her parents were supportive. and she has definitely drunkenly made out with caroline once or twice.

elena is the new rebecca de winter, and katherine is the former. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

her relationship with damon is very death and the maiden coded. it's intoxicating and unique. they grow very close when she becomes a vampire because he embraces her, while she and stefan drift because she's changed "for the worse" (his thoughts).

she's completely unhinged as a vampire. she's feral, animal like and cannibalistic. stefan finds her vulgar.

she is doomed by the narrative in all divergences of canon.

the ghost of katherine haunts her and always will. it's other vampires that recognise her, assume it's katherine and bare their teeth. it's the portrait that stefan kept for over a hundred years. she left her mark on stefan and damon and those wounds may never heal. katherine impersonates her. it's the fact that even though she isn't katherine, she will always look like katherine.
