Week 9 - Multimodal text

The multimodal text I have chose for this weeks post is a comic strip.

I chose it because it allows for students to express themselves visually through the use of pencils and paper in relation to text or other classroom content. This text uses the visual (seeing) modality.

I would use this in a creative writing lesson where students would form a narrative piece and create a comic strip to complement the words written in the text. It would allow them to present the setting, characters and scene of the story they create.

Week 7 - Two resources, tools, or ideas for teachers to improve their personal knowledge and skills in language, literacy, or literature.

Resource One - FUSE

FUSE provides teachers with a large array of literacy resources aligned with codes from the Victorian Curriculum. It teachers to search for tools and ideas to improve their own knowledge of literacy to have a better impact on teaching curriculum content.

Resource Two - Reading Rockets

Reading Rockets is a resource which provides teachers with in depth content to successfully develop literacy teaching skills. The tools and resources on the website cover a range of different aspects into teaching literacy to students and supports teachers with delivering lessons based on different aspects of the curriculum.

Week 3 - Teacher Resource for Literature

I chose the teacher’s section of the Scholastic website for teachers to find quality literature resources. 

The website provides endless amounts of information and resources for teachers to benefit from and assist them in their teaching of literature. It includes a search engine for an endless amount of books, lesson plans and ideas, teacher blogs and even teacher tool kits. Scholastic also offers books/activities that are “trending” in order for teachers to stay up to date with the current rage.

I would recommend this website for all primary school educators and will certainly be using it when I graduate!

Week 2 - Writing Poster

This poster was purchased by my mentor teacher in my 2nd year of placement and strongly influenced how her grade 3 student’s would improve on their writing pieces.

The poster allowed the students to expand on their basic vocabulary and attempt to create stronger pieces during essay writing on various topics. I think this is a great way for students to develop their knowledge of higher tiered words and more frequently produce improved pieces of writing.

Week 1 - Childhood Book

The book that I recall from my childhood is the Australian classic, “Possum Magic” by Mem Fox. The reason this book is so vivid in my memory is because of the way it introduced Australia to me as a student in prep who barely spoke a word of English. Through the use of eye-catching illustrations and Australian cultural words, the book connected into my sense of wonder and allowed me to appreciate what the author was aiming to portray about this country.

As a youngster, my reading experiences revolved heavily around developing my literacy abilities, having come from a household which primarily spoke Armenian. After reflecting on this, I’m able to ensure that when I teach literacy, I will aim to cater for the needs of every student individually. Knowing from personal experience that not all students are at the same standard in their reading abilities will allow me to empathise with the ones who tend to struggle more than others, and provide assistance to areas in order to develop their literacy needs.
