bradyemmerson:
It was clear as day that Dean was extremely nervous about whatever it was he needed to say and Brady held her tongue, keeping a concerned expression as she waited. When he finally did speak, her jaw dropped ever so slightly with surprise, needing a moment to process everything he was saying. She totally understood it, it would have been hard not to end up falling for someone like Emily, but hearing that Dean was interested still came as something of a shock to her. A shock and, in some capacity, a disappointment.
“Fuck, Dean, I didn’t…I didn’t know that it was um…that it was supposed to be a date or whatever,” she mumbled, head dropping towards her chest as she started to bite down hard at her lip. “I wouldn’t have like…been there if I knew. Did um…I mean…did Emily know it was like…supposed to be a date?” Brady didn’t know for sure, but she didn’t get the sense that Emily had expected it to be a date from the way she had talked about the evening. Dean was an attractive, charming in his own way sort of guy, so she didn’t see any reason why Emily wouldn’t have gone out with Dean if it had been a clearly set out date. “You uh…you should maybe talk to her about it, like…make uh…make sure she knows how you feel ‘cause I don’t…I don’t think she knew.” Brady felt a pang in her chest suggesting it, the thought of Emily and Dean being together deflating her in a way that she hadn’t necessarily expected. Even if it meant pushing her own crush on Emily aside, she wanted nothing more than her friends to be happy and if that was with each other, she would support it.
He shook his head and looked down too embarrassed to make eye contact. “no, don’t be sorry. It’s not your fault, you didn't know.” He shrugged and looked up, making eye contact again. “I thought I had asked her on a date, but maybe it didn’t come across that way. She didn’t say anything to you?” His head tilted to the side. Even if Emily wasn’t interested she surely would’ve mentioned it to Brady. He noticed her searching for words and was worried he was making things uncomfortable for her. “Yeah, maybe. I don’t know I don’t want to force my feelings on her or anything. If she knows she might feel guilty and say she’d go out with me. I just...i want it to be real.” He looked around, “I’m sorry this is weird. I didn’t mean to be so weird about it. Are we still okay?” His voice was almost pleading and there was the same look in his eyes. He hoped beyond anything he hadn’t messed up their friendship by ghosting.
