I was reading an article in the Washington Post by Lucy McBride this morning and realized that back to normal will BE the new normal. Yesterday, I was helping students who needed to pick up their books and supplies, I found myself having an adjusted conversation. Instead of saying something like, “You know where the Student Activities Center is, right?” I’m now providing directions on how to just enter campus. I’m speaking with students who are finishing their first year at VVC and have never been to campus. We all want to go back to normal but what does the new normal look like, feel like? In 2016, I was not enamored of either major candidate but I did what I think many did, I voted for the lessor of the two evils, so to speak. When Trump was elected, I thought let’s see what he can do. Let’s give him a chance, despite my many deep concerns. As the last four years have passed I have seen our respect and standing in the world slide away. The division has been deepened and used as a tool to do whatever needs to be done to get to the desired outcome. Disappointment, frustration and chagrin were my typical responses as I watched the broken machine in Washington, DC shiver and shake and clunk forward day after day. Today, days after Election Day, many short nights of going to bed early in the morning and getting up a few short hours later, hoping to know that a result has been established. Today, I find myself having an emotional response - relief that maybe in January we can move forward and onward, that my sense of pride as an American is restored. Every season I look forward to reading this journal - it is NOT a magazine to be flipped through and browsed casually. Read each article carefully as the articles are thought provoking and urge being present. I know this sounds a bit like an ad but I really enjoy reading and absorbing the content, often multiple times, in this journal.
