Bloodymary fanfic-esk snippets because I won't make this a comic...
A mangled ship trailed by a cloud of viscous red soup appears on Eridia's shoreline. Detected by Eridian scientists, the Iron Lung is fished from the temperate waters and brought in for study.
It quickly becomes clear that there's only one person fit to handle the delirious, gravely wounded passenger of the vessel. Luckily, they have just the guy for the job. Perhaps subjectively unfit but in these circumstances the natural choice.
Grace is asked to meet the stranger. They cut open the (cruelly, as Grace must note) welded-shut hatch. Grace can't believe it. His mind is swirling with questions, threatening to make him trip over his tongue. So he keeps his next words simple.
Indeed there is a man slumped against the lefthand wall. The interior of the ship is covered in a metallic and vaguely organic smelling red substance. And, unfortunately, so is its passenger. He chuffs out a string of truly defeated noises: "Who are you?"
"I'm Dr. Ryland Grace." It's been a long time since he's heard his own name. "I'm.. a biophysicist, I do a little bit of space travel here and there, heh. That's how I ended up here."
The man groans, half annoyance, half agony. Head still leaned away from the door, Grace has not even seen his face yet.
"What about you? What's your name?"
"Fuckin' know-it-all... Who're you with? Not the COI, I take it. You would've dragged me out of this thing and torn me to shreds by now."
"What's- No I'm... just a guy. I was sent to space on the Hail Mary to investigate the lifeforms dimming our sun and now I teach pebble kids on Eridia. Regular guy doing Regular Guy Things."
The blood-matted mop of hair turns slightly, curiously.
Grace steps into the submarine. The rusty metal complains under his boot.
"You can tell me about yourself later. We've gotta get you out of here. At least half of that bloody stuff on you should be yours by the looks of it."
"I'm..Simon" the man croaks as he heaves himself up by the good arm. Overestimating his strength, Simon's knees buckle under him. Taking Grace, who also overestimates his own strength in an attempt to catch him, down with him.
Grace sits Simon down somewhere brighter.
"Were you.. actually on a ship to save the dying stars?" Simon says through the afterglow of searing pain from isopropyl alcohol on his half inside out skin.
"Something like that", Grace says while dressing the visible wounds on Simon's body. He does it instead of Armando. It is a better way to get to know each other, Grace thinks.
"As I said, I was sent to do it. I ended up being the only one who even survived the trip for the research mission. Then I met Rocky, we found the cure to our problem, and now I'm here."
Simon is looking at Grace, the foggy, grey horizon behind him shining unfamiliar and alien. Pain relievers stopped the pounding in his head but his vision is still blurry, and his body feels weak and jittery. He can tell the man's approximate features. That he's of avarage build, that his hair is blond, that he has peculiar markings all around the left side of his body, and that he wears glasses – a luxury where Simon is from. Evidently, they are from much different worlds. There seemed to be no lofty or cold attitude, which would grant someone luxuries on Eden, present in Grace. He is as he said – regular. Cheerful, even. Content. Not stressed and desperate like every human Simon knows, including himself. Did Grace achieve this contentment from living on this planet or has he always carried it within him all his life? Whatever it is, Simon can't help but crave a piece of the ease and care that the person now tending to him radiates.
Grace's hands rudimentarily clean and disinfect his wounds – something Simon wouldn't even do for himself, given the chance – then bandage them carefully. Even if he's precious because Grace hasn't had contact with another person in a long time, it's also been long for Simon since he's been any of this sort to anyone. When a hand comes around to his face, brushing a streak of hair to the side to examine something Simon can't even feel, he leans into the touch. His eyes fall shut from the warmth the act brings. All the while, surprise strikes Grace's chest like lightning. He's utterly usure what to do, so he keeps still, which damnedly makes it clear that him and Simon are perhaps in the same boat after all. The touch of a non-Eridian – of skin – awakens something dormant. Something that had him conflicted even on Earth. Conflict is smothered, however, by deep waves of visceral comfort. It's strange, but also nice. Grace doesn't know if it is selfless or immensely self-serving to let them stay like this for another moment, and another, and another. He doesn't want to turn Simon away by making him feel unwelcome or unsafe to express his needs.
And then, Simon's eyes peer open. Apparently seeing with a new-found clarity, he promptly evades his head and smacks Grace's forearm away for good measure.
"Alright, got it", Grace meanders, "I'm expendable."
He turns to leave the room.
"You can use my shower. I'll go get you a change of clothes."
All Simon can muster is a boyish "Thanks..."
"And another thing", Grace leans back into the doorway. "Stay clothed until I'm back. I don't think I could handle that right now."
With his lingering vendetta against scientists, Simon feels prompted to disobey.
"What are those things anyway?" Simon asks. genuinely curious. "For goodness sake, they can understand you, you know! And they have great hearing. Let's start with this: Simon, this is Rocky, my space vessel roomate from Eridia (that's here). Rocky, this is Simon, the huffy human from the submarine."
Rocky squeaks, incredulous over the stranger's audacity.
"Around here, we're the aliens", Grace explains, "so I'd advise you make a good first impression. We come in peace, kinda thing."
"I've had it with fuckin' aliens."
"Well, they're the ones who saved you, so I'm afraid a little respect is in order."
"Grace right. Big leaky space blob rude! Insult Eridian appearance before even say thank you!", Rocky whistles angrily beside Grace.
"See? Now you've done it. You've soured his opinion of you!"
"His? Can you understand them or something??"
Rocky stomped a front leg.
"Grace tell rude human that Eridian kind offended. Make it up to Eridians by going back to travel space for a thousand years!"
"What's he babbling about?!?"
"Tell him!" Rocky warbles.
"C'mon, Rock. He looks like he's been through a lot." Rocky lets out a dissatisfied whistle. Grace lowers his voice to a whisper. "To be honest, I don't think it's just the submarine that's messed him up."
"Humans done bad things to Simon too, question?"
"I think powerful humans like sacrificing people no matter which reality we're from. I was lucky to have met you along the way. I don't think Simon was that fortunate."
"Grace has soft heart. Melancholy for Simon should not excuse mean words."
"Look, I don't think Simon was prepared to survive. I think his spirit is broken. It'll take a while for him to make peace with not dying. He'll come around to Eridia. I hope."
"I CAN STILL HEAR YOU YOU KNOW!"
