Different timelines?  That does explain how she and Hijikata can be so dissimilar now, though this notion only serves to bring up more questions than answers.  Just how much did their memories differ?  Was she from a different timeline altogether, or was she simply from the future of Hijikata’s time?  She doesn’t know, and there isn’t any way to truly know without asking far too many questions.  Instead, she decides to go for what will be simplest to accept.
With a determined nod, she answers him.
"Hmm.  Alright."  There’s a pause, as though she’s trying to figure out the best way to word this.  "Well, if I’m from the future of Hijikata-san’s timeline, then … that means that I’m responsible for keeping Hijikata-san safe now, aren’t I?"  No fear nor reservation enter her tone, though: instead, she seems quite bright-eyed and serious about such a sentiment.
Ah, yes. Â And how safe the demon commander of the Shinsengumi must feel, now that he knows that you, Yukimura Chizuru, shall be the blade to defend his life from what might come to pass.
But the smile she offers him now isn’t just for her.  As much as she wishes to forget the terrible future she had seen at Ezo, there is greater urgency to erase that twisted expression from his features.  She’ll even dare to take a step towards him now, and reach out to take one of his hands in her own.  Hands she’d been so nervous to touch before now bring her nothing but relief.
He’s alive, she reminds herself, he’s alive and well.  That’s all that matters.
"But I," she trails off for a moment, before reluctantly putting a conclusion to her statement, "may need some food first."
Her words caught him off guard, and it even showed in his face. The idea of a woman protecting him felt weird. It was the same for anyone, man or woman, but because this was Chizuru.... it felt weirder. "Don't be an idiot. I can protect myself, and you'll just get hurt if you try to keep me safe,"
And he wasn't say that to be mean, or to doubt her skills... whatever skills she has anyway, but it was because it was hurt to avoid getting hurt around him. While Chizuru could heal herself, she could still feel the pain.
That was not something he wanted her to go through.
Frowning, Toshizo stared down at his hand which was with hers. It felt warm and soft, so delicate. This is what he wanted to protect, along with Kondou and everyone else. Although she was different, it was her innocent and pure self that Toshizo wanted to keep safe.
Even if such a task would be a hard one, he didn't mind. He was content as long as she always smiled and stayed as the same woman that he learned to know and get close to.
There's a light chuckle. "Food... I suppose I can try find you some. I have some spare money, and there are plenty of shops nearby. They're in the culture district," he said, nodding his head towards the direction it is in. Â

You pause, staring at the other man for a long minute or so. He was being serious, that he wasn’t truly grasping anything you were telling him. Not really. He might be hearing your words, but he wasn’t listening to them.
Fine, whatever. You were over it.
"Of course not, that’d be impossible since you don’t let anyone get close enough to know you, right?" you say, sarcasm tinged so lightly that it doesn’t sound like it’s there at all. Maybe it isn’t. "Well don’t worry, I won’t bother you again unless you want me to. I’ve got the closure I need."
An annoyed sigh escaped his lips and Toshizo turned his head away. "If you think that then you have a lot to learn," because Kondou did know him very well and it was the same with most of his captains. That was the reason they all knew deep down inside he always cared for them.
He was cold and calculating at times, strict, but he was always thinking about them and what would be best. That was just the type of man he was.
Rubbing the back of his neck, Toshizo shrugged. "Well... I'm glad hitting me was able to give you that then," even if he was still confused about a lot of things. It would be pointless to wonder about them though.

It felt awkward for him to be here. He had did public events like this, in fact they didn't have any sort of 'balls' at Kyoto or Edo. Sure, they had festivals, but those were different and he never attended them. Crossing his arms and shifting uncomfortably, Toshizo's dark eyes looked over the room.
There were a lot of people and if he had a choice, which he actually does, but his duty and pride was getting in the way, he wouldn't be here.
But, because he thought it would be good for Chizuru he decided to come. It was also so he would be able to keep an easy eye on her. Toshizo had spent most of the night backed up into a wall and watching those around him.
So far he saw no danger, and neither did anyone look dangerous enough to attack, and that helped him relax a little. He didn't need to keep his eyes on the young woman all the time then which was good. But, even so, he couldn't help, but stare at her.
Clearing his throat, he stood up straight. "You're not uncomfortable, are you?" Toshizo asked and looked down at her.
Don't mind this jerk who is just standing in the corner, a little flustered because why is he at this ball and what is he even doing to do, he can't even dance.
Schuyler wasn’t very good talking to people at all, let alone a man. She didn’t have very many of them in her life, so it was somewhat of a new experience all together for her. His statement was something that made her silent for a few moments, thinking about it. Did all women like to go to something like a ball..?
"I think it’s safe to say that most women do like things such as balls. Even for those who haven’t been to one, it’s something that I guess we can’t help but get excited over."
"I see..."
Maybe this would be a good chance for someone he knew to make friends. It wasn't are for Toshizo to think about others more than himself, and she had been through a lot. It would also allow this woman to be able to make friends with another person. "I do hope nothing goes through if that's the case."
:…what matters do you have to attend to? Don’t be like that! It’s only for one night, have some fun! You just got here, it’ll be fine! Your matters can wait, it’s best to live life to the fullest!”
"I'll have 'fun' when I feel like I need to, and my business is for me to know only," and those that are part of the Shinsengumi and their plus one. "... There's a woman name Chizuru, get her to go. She deserves it after... things."
and we never know why he's attracted to such a clumsy dork.
Don’t worry sweet cheeks, Nora knows how to breathe, she just does it at different intervals than the average person. “Yes! Hmm for people who have time? Didn’t you just get here? Then, you’d be a person that had time for it too! You should gooooo!”
It's a good thing he wouldn't be able to hear that. Toshizo gives a slow nod. "You would be correct, and I don't think this 'ball' would suit me very well. There's more important matters for me to attend to, too."
He definitely didn’t seem like a talkative person. Well, she’d be the same if some stranger just started talking to him too. “You’re very welcome,” she answered, the softest of smiles tugging on her lips. “I hope it was somewhat helpful.”
Spoilers; he doesn't know how to talk to women. Okay, that's not true because he was able to get along with Chizuru very well. Except he does feel a little awkward at this point because he isn't sure what to say. Scratching his cheek, Toshizo looks away.
"I take it that it's something women would like...?"
Requested by anon.
"Yes! Hello there! I, Nora Valkyrie, will totally tell you why balls are so important!" Here she comes running over to him from out of nowhere. "Balls are awesome parties where it’s kind of formal but it’s nice, you dance, have food, some good drinks, and get to meet lots of people! It’s really fun!"
She does know when to stop and breath between talking, right? Because he's a little worried about her. "So it's that sort of event." It sounded like when they'd go to the Akasen. "I suppose for people who have the time then it would be fun."
"You know… I’ve never went to one myself, but it’s a pretty big deal here from what I’ve gathered. I’m new here, so I can’t say if it’s fully true or not, but that’s what I’ve seen here." Schuyler’s never been to a dance, let alone a ball, but she’s certainly up for the challenge.
"... I see." This means he isn't the only one that's a little confused about the ball. It is a relief to hear that, even if it barely shows on his face. "Thank you for that information."
