CityGuide and App
Tourist Spots and Content Research
Content wise for the guide concept i have been looking into the top tourist spots and city to travel. A lot of research has not only gone into the brochure but also when considering the content of the App. The information used across the different platforms needs to be correct, factual and up-to-date so I have cross referring for accuracy. Top-tips, money saving and budgeting tips, maps, travel etc. are all things that are going to be included. Currently I'm looking into different city for the app concept to widen the app to include different travel areas and taylor it to the target audience.
Below is one of the many references i have been using in the process of collecting information and referencing.
The BCU graduate show event main point of advertisement is through word of mouth, the website also displays reel digital banners. I would like to work on creating a campaign that would include posters for advertisement pre-event and a package that would be used for further promotion of the organisation during the event. A colourful and vibrant campaign that represents the art and design faculty and the theme of the Inspire festival.
I have also been considering the how to widen the campaign; considering what will reach who. For example thinking about the posters it would be more impacting to display them outside of the university to the general public, around the location of the university.
In terms of the events and advertising project I have been carrying out I am now pushing it future to see how far I can take my initial designs to create a consistent look on different media. As well as that I have been developing my print ideas further, working with letterpress to develop the designs Finally I have completed the user journey for the app along with most of the pages. I am now ready to take this further. What I have found is the research into who will be using the app most important for the success of design
First attempt at Lino print
BCU Posters
Im planning on creating banners for the occasion and also name badges using the previous elements of design that I have been working on. The posters I have created so far are intended to show and ‘arty’ and ‘colourful’ side of BCU, bring out its art facilities and emphasising the idea of textiles and fashion. Now I need to re-work the designs to work with guidelines.
I now want to continue to create name badges and banners, of which i have been looking at inspirational designs. Below are some of which I am taking inspiration from.
Workcheck
After my last work check iv been able to determine what i now need to do to progress in my projects
The main advice was to expand the projects and take them as far as i can push them to come out with a big visual impact for each one a create more substantial final outcomes for my portfolio
BCU posters-Im thinking now about creating a banner for the event, badges for attendants and photographing the university to place posters
UCC Coffee-creating mock-ups and thinking about designing sale space
Editorial Guide-creating and app and prototype guide
printing albums and book covers
I also now need to consider printing and creating my final presentations
Here are two screen shots of the final outcome for the two book cover designs i completed.
The first-Caitlin Morans ‘How to be a Women’, i attempted to capture the feel and theme of the book, bring out and represent its feminist humour and comical theme. The final design is collage and print, using pink, grey and white as primary colours. The overall design was thought out in terms of considering the majority female reader and the contents of the book, which can be seen through my sketchbooks.
The secondary book is Emil and the detectives, the brief stated to create a front and back cover for a ‘mature’ detective book aimed at children. I of course researched the audience, collected mood boards and progressed through sketchbooks. I also worked carefully to create the typography through Adobe Illustrator
The initial idea was to illustrate the train-line (an important part of the story), I ended up with a collage style front cover done through Photoshop and Illustrator which also I felt worked. Also in terms of colour I thought carefully about keeping it ‘mature’ to suit the reader whilst also remembering the age range of the young audience. The colour scheme was also inspired of the storyline, the 140 marks stolen from Emil. Overall in terms of concept of the design the story line played an important part in inspiring the final outcomes of characters, colour and illustration
In the process of designing the covers I worked to a template and consider sizing, I found that this meant compositional elements had to be re-adjusted several times and elements such as the barcode, I also had to keep to the guidelines with both books.
Also character design was equally important, I researched the character in the book to recreate the villain illustration to go onto the back cover.
UCC Coffee- Final Outcomes
I thought carefully about the concept when designing the packaging and overall look for the UCC coffee brief
The idea was the re-invent the packaging to make it more shelf ready, from what is currently a product designed to be under the counter. Brining out its best quality and focusing on the sourcing of the coffee by taking design inspiration from Brazil, Columbia, Peru ect.
I wanted to also bring out the ethical quality of the coffee by focusing on the fact it is fair-trade and finally the taste, one of the ways of doing this is focusing more closely on the ‘range’ they offer and brining these to light through promotional offers such as discounts, coupons and tasters.
Another point to mention is the importance of colour coding for taster packaging and product packaging, to separate the range. One thing I set out to achieve with the final design was to give the brand a new look that would pop on the shelf, represent the sourced countries and separate the range that UCC offer.
Having looked to others for content guidance during the process of creating my cv I see that it does good to make it personal to the job desired. Some include there hopes, the job there after in an informative way on the cv. Whilst I have nearly finished the overall Cv, this is something I'm yet to do. Also like the one above I'm going to now work on polishing my design to make it more quirky, unique and visually representative of what I do
Communication in Design
During the process of design I'm continually thinking who am I communicating to, the target audience. Currently I'm brainstorming CV designs, at the forefront of my mind is; how it will communicate ‘me’, how it will be viewed and what is being communicated visually and through content. Potential employers of course will be reading a CV so i want to maintain a certain professionalism whilst reflect my personal style and skills through design. I have now come up with a design idea through sketch and brainstorming that i will follow through, content is just as important as visual design in terms of a CV, what has really helped me to finalise what will go into my CV is following guides provided by educational establishments and looking to others as content guides. I am now ready to follow up on the final design. Here are a fe CVs that i have found useful and inspiring. What i really like about these particular designs is the balance of design and content, what is most obvious is the professionalism of the person behind the CV communicated through desing.

New York guide-The beginning process
Firstly what inspired this project was experience New York and the photos i had collected and edited, also my interest in editorial work and composing type and image. I then started to look into pre-existing guide books all of which i found similar. Traditional books for deep reading and pages of information, when considering whats already out there I thought about creating a guide more to the point, simple, fast, for on the go and young travellers.
TripAdvisor was another point of inspiration, i found myself referring to it when planning my travels; with good advice and pictures from ‘real’ people. Before my travels i tend to visit the site, spend time writing everything down because of the lack of internet and service that is available on my travels. There for i based my initial ideas on a guide that would eliminate the need to plan beforehand and appeal to the last minute travel also.
The idea is to create a collection of travel guides for different cities and countries all around the world, highlighting the main tourist attractions, timeline and contacts plus tips for travel and visits. Expanding the guide to become more useful to the traveller it would be a good idea to include; places to eat out, subway maps and hotel directory.
PRODUCING THE GUIDE
NEW YOR NEW YORK
Initially i wanted to create a square guide fold out leaflet, after some thought i decided to go with a simple 8 page fold up brochure style a5 guide.
Ive been working on creating consistency throughout the design and focusing on the ‘city’ look.
Placing and composing text has been a gradual process of adding things taking them away to keep to the proposed look, keep it relevant and target the desired audience. Each page follows the city design, keeping to a few colours which have been taken from the photographic image of each page; mainly light blues, grey, black, oranges ect. Sticking to the plan I have been keeping each page sweet and short, considering whats achievable and factual information for the guide, also brining in a personal touch from my own experiences. Finally paying close attention to how everything going to fit and look when printed at folded.
NEW YORK CITY GUIDE BOOK
EDITIORAL
THE IDEA IS TO CREATE A 3 DAY GUIDE BOOK FOR VARIOUS TOURIST SPOTS, USING EDITORIAL SKILLS, PHOTOGRAPHY AND TYPE. OF THE COLLECTION I AM FOCUSING ON NEW YORK. THINKING ABOUT CONTENT AND TEXT RELATES TO THE TARGET AUDIENCE IN THIS CASE IM FOCUSING ON DEVELOPING A QUICK, SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE POCKET GUIDE FOR NEWBIES TO NEWYORK, PRIMARILY THOES AGED BETWEEN 18-25. THE IDEA IS FOR TO PROVIDE A ROUGH GUIDE FOR THOES NEEDING INSPIRATION FOR PLACES TO VISIT OR ENLIGHTENMENT OF THE AREA THEY VISITING. THE GUIDE WILL GIVE A SIMPLE AND VISUAL DAILY GUIDE THAT IS INTENTIONED TO BE CARRYED AROUND BY THE USER AND REFERED TO FOR HELP AND INSPIRATION ON WHAT TO DO; ALSO FOCUSING ON TIME AND GETTING THE MOST OUT OF SHORT TRAVELL.
CONSIDERING THE VISUALS THE GUIDE WILL BE TO THE POINT, QUICK AND SIMPLE TO USE. HAVING A RUSTIC CITY LOOK, EACH GUIDE MATCHING THE UNIQUENESS OF THE PLACE IT IS FOR. WHAT HAS BEEN MOST IMPORTANT IN THIS PROCESS IS COMPOSING THE PAGES AND KEEPING TO A CONSISTENT STYLE THROUGHOUT PAGES. IM HAVE FOUND MY SELF REFERRING BACK TO THE TARGET AUDIENCE WHEN STYLING THE GUIDE AND ALSO WRITING THE CONENT; MAKING SURE THE STYLE OF WRITTING IS APPROPRIATE FOR THE GUIDE AND WORKS WITH THE AUDINCE AS WELL AS BEEN CONSISTENT AND FACTUAL.
TARGET AUDIENCE
STUDENTS, FIRST TIME TRAVELS, THOES WHO REFER TO THE INTERNET, MAPS, GUIDES ECT, ARTY, 18-25
