Today in labor history, May 1, 2015: Happy International Workers’ Day! May Day is celebrated around the world as a day of international working class solidarity and is a national public holiday in more than 80 countries. The date was chosen by the Socialist International Congress (the Second International) in 1889 to commemorate the Haymarket incident in Chicago.
Hand Crafted Beautiful Easter Eggs
Self-taught illustrator Dinara Mirtalipova creates colorful contemporary works of art with a traditional twist; she juxtaposes Uzbek folk designs intricately, painting beautiful patterns on easter eggs.
Although she had studied Computer Science at the Tashkent State University of Economics, her true passion was always patterns and illustration. Her handcrafted eggs are comprised of wood or porcelain on which she paints little birds, delicate flowers and all the elements that represent her cultural identity. Vibrantly unique and simple, you can see her folk art illustrations on her Etsy shop!

CABARET DE L’ENFER
—–
MARAIS | Hell’s Swells
(National Geographic archives, August 2003) A hot spot called Hell’s Café lured 19th-century Parisians to the city’s Montmartre neighborhood—like the Marais—on the Right Bank of the Seine. With plaster lost souls writhing on its walls and a bug-eyed devil’s head for a front door, le Café de l'Enfer may have been one of the world’s first theme restaurants. According to one 1899 visitor, the café’s doorman—in a Satan suit—welcomed diners with the greeting, “Enter and be damned!” Hell’s waiters also dressed as devils. An order for three black coffees spiked with cognac was shrieked back to the kitchen as: “Three seething bumpers of molten sins, with a dash of brimstone intensifier!”
The above are antique cocaine dishes. Cocaine was legal in the US until 1914. (Source)
