Introduction to your most humble servant

Hey everyone!

I'd like to properly introduce myself as I've finally decided to be more active on this blog. My name is Adele and contrary to the popular belief I'm not actually British. I'm Kazakh, a descendant of nomadic tribes, free and poetic as the steppe. Kazakhstan is the biggest landlocked country in the world so I guess that's where my curiosity for everything sea-related comes from.

I've been an artist all my life and recently took a path to specialise in 2d hand-drawn animation. Apart from gaining professional experience I'd like to continue creating traditional art and sharing it here as well.

I love to always be in a sort of a study process and I love learning about different cultures, time periods and of course good cinema. From etymology to Star Wars Andor, from Welsh language to extinct animals, from historical naval fiction to modern true-crime cases - if it was possible I would talk and listen the whole day away.

So if you'll be interested in some of my artworks or just want to chat about anything - you're more than welcome in my DMs (I'm serious, I really need to talk to someone outside of my immediate family haha)!

Christmas Presents

Christmas is the celebration of love, togetherness and gifts. At least that’s how it is today. Consciously going out and buying presents or making them ourselves only really began in the middle of the 19th century. Before that, a few little things were exchanged, but the conscious giving of Christmas presents only came about then. And what about our comrades at sea? Well, there too, little things were exchanged early on. Tobacco, rum or small homemade tobacco boxes or pipes were passed on. Later, sweets were also added. On land, the loved ones were also given spices, fabrics, tea, fine scrimshaws for hte households or even jewellery, and the children often received a homemade toy. For officers, it was more likely to be jewellery, a perfume or porcelain for their beloved wifes.

From the middle of the 19th century, it became more and more common to give each other gifts. Children on land and on the whales received homemade toys such as drums, dolls, wooden soldiers, toy boats or pieces of clothing, in addition to sweets, nuts and fruit.

The captains’ wives also liked to make things for the crew, such as shirts, slippers or new trousers. They also gave their husbands presents like a cigar holder, tobacco boxes or a book.

Within the family and among friends, the ritual of gift-giving strengthened such important, intangible qualities as friendship, affection, appreciation, generosity and mutual dependence, while value was irrelevant. These are all qualities that one could always use in certain situations. In this sense, enjoy your gifts and give some yourself to put a smile on the face of those around you.

Aqueduct

This is a small watercolour sketch I did in 2022 at Pont du Gard. Located in the south of France it's one of the best preserved reminders of the Roman heritage. I've studied in France for 3 years and I'll elaborate on that in later posts.

Some water! A watercolour landscape painting of one of the Kolsai lakes located in Almaty region of Kazakhstan. That's a lovely place to explore on a boat or a catamaran. I might want to paint it from another POV.

So this is the acrylic painting I've finished yesterday. It's the view just outside of my house in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Hope you'll like it as much as I do although for me it's going to evoke a unique affection to be reminded of that green morning of May. This artwork became a ray of sunshine in my gloomy and uncertain world of jobhunting.

The Original Uniform from Lieutenant William Hicks . At Trafalgar Hicks was a 21-year old midshipman and aide-de-camp to Captain Israel Pellew of the Conqueror. After the battle Hicks was promoted lieutenant and left the service in 1819.
