My original crap is here: #mystuff My icon is Johnny Depp from 2004 LJ days, “forever young” has certainly not aged well, and I kind of like the irony. ~ I'm a fan of enemies-to-lovers (Butchlander from The Boys, Regan from the Walking Dead, Batjokes from Batman, Tfield and Abrubag from Prison Break, Coldflash from The Flash barely qualifies as enemyslash), lovers-to-enemies (Cherik from Xmen, Coldwave from Legends of Tomorrow) and a boy-and-his-robot / symbiote / shinigami / etc (Symbrock from Venom among others). A lot of different comics fandoms, random hot guys, and baby animals. I tag fandoms pretty religiously.
I still find it very hard to believe that a popular widespread martyr cult wouldn’t spring up immediately after the world witnessing Homelander die on TV.
Are we supposed to think people would no longer belieeeeeve in him because he said he’d burn all the nonbelievers? It is supremely naive to think the people who woke up as Homelander supporters that day wouldn’t just nod along to his entire speech and never think any of his threats applied to them (nor would most think they were unreasonable threats towards nonbelievers). For trying to parody Trump fandom, The Boys writers don’t seem to look into any of the crowd emotional mechanics at the Trump rallies.
Or maybe we are to conclude that people didn’t rally around Homelander because he said he’d eat shit on live TV? That never fully made sense. The writers want us to point and laugh because he didn’t go out on a dignified note, but who the hell cares about dignity at that juncture? Are we really saying Homelander would be a more worthy person if he got depressed by his circumstances and didn’t even try to beg for his life? Yes, I thought the specific dialogue of how he begged was ridiculous and stupid, but it’s even more stupid to posit that not caring enough to live to beg for it is somehow laudable.
Also, outside of any religious/cult of personality overtones, a lot of the public who liked Homelander’s birthday special speech would likely take his execution on TV as proof that the shadow government cabal ultimately silences anyone who speaks out against them. And if anyone looks up who Billy Butcher was, they’d find that he’s former CIA, so that would definitely feed into paranoia about a large scale conspiracy.
a funny thing about having a Problematic Blorbo is that you'll periodically come across a post along the lines of "um let's not forget that [Blorbo] is a bad person..." listing their various crimes, and if you have a modicum of intellectual honesty you find yourself nodding along and saying yeah it's true... but it's the greyness of their character that makes them so compelling... At the same time though you have a little Saul Goodman in your ear going "your honor in their defense: who cares like omfgggg who caresssssss like come onnnnnn"
I was testing out new brushes today and decided to do a few Homelander studies after finishing the series.
I started the renaissance style Storm Siblings last year when the movie came out but just got too busy, same with the Murderbot one. Will they ever be finished? Who knows, but since it's summer I wanted to get a little more regular with my posting. :)
