I realize that I haven't posted on here in about two months, and I wish I was reporting happier news. Janet's (illbeonthathill) family cannot access her Tumblr account at this time, but since a lot of her followers follow me, they've asked me to post this here:

Hello, everyone. We’re sorry to share sad news with those of you who may not have heard yet. BORN IN THE U.S.A. IS NOT A PATRIOTIC SONG

Okay, guys, I did my job.

I don't know. Maybe there are other incidents like this that happen in other parts of the country and I'm missing them, just like others missed this (or at least didn't comment on it where I could see it). Or maybe it got more widespread coverage than I've been aware of and my complaints are unwarranted. But that's not how it feels. It's especially weird because Obama was in town when it happened, about three miles away, which you think would've made this a pretty big deal.

This is a pretty good summation of the events, but be warned that it's an incredibly sad, difficult read. (I guess the fact that it's from the New York Daily News doesn't help my point about the lack of national response.)

Ugh. I have multiple friends who go to SMC. Thank goodness none of them were on campus at the time...but how easily that could've not been the case. I also have friends who live/work in Santa Monica and know people who take the bus that he shot at. Oy. Just way too close for comfort, in every sense.

Today some woman on the street walked by me and said to me "Eat a cheeseburger. You'll be satisfied, I promise."

Why, why, why do people feel the need to provide unsolicited commentary about other people's weight? It doesn't matter if it's positive or negative, if it's directed at someone large or small, if it's to someone's face or behind their back, or if it's coming from someone you know or a complete stranger. Regardless of circumstances, it's NO ONE ELSE'S BUSINESS, and I just don't get why people can't seem to accept that.

Look, I've always been (naturally) underweight for my height, and I'm used to getting comments about it from time to time. I never ask people, because I'm fully aware of what I look like, but for some reason they still feel the need to point it out to me. It's generally either intended as a compliment, or it's expressed as a concern for my health. Don't get me wrong, I realize that I don't have it anywhere near as bad as people on the larger side do. I won't pretend for one second that any comment I've ever gotten has been as vicious as some of the abuse large people (particularly women) get.

But this mentality just irritates me to no end. People look how they look for any number of reasons, and we're probably all dealing with some kind of insecurity caused by the ridiculous beauty "ideals" that we're bombarded with every day. And it really aggravates that insecurity when others are clearly so bothered about something in our appearance that they can't resist the urge to make comments about it. What sort of horrible existence must a person be living that bringing others down doesn't make them feel bad about themselves? Just. Ugh. Stop it.

That whole "eat a cheeseburger" phrase is ridiculous, by the way. As if eating one cheeseburger is suddenly going to slow down my metabolism forever or something. (Besides, lady, I don't eat meat, and even if I did, cheeseburgers aren't kosher. But thanks for the advice.)
